Rising again or what you need to know about remontant strawberries

Description of the species
Everyone is looking forward to the first summer month to enjoy delicious and aromatic strawberries. But the joy does not last long, and the next harvest has to wait for a whole year. Of course, you can be content with a purchased berry, but what could be more natural than a self-grown product? There is a solution! It is necessary to plant a repair strawberry. Translated from the French language remontant strawberry from the word "remonter", which translates as "rise again". Indeed, it is, the fragrant crop can be re-harvested until autumn. Externally, the remontant berry does not differ from the usual variety, the differences are palpable in weight and taste. It often happens that the second peak of the harvest occurs at the beginning of autumn, and in terms of volume it can be several times higher than the first.
With all the advantageousness of this variety, this berry also has its drawbacks. A double harvest can lead to a weakening of the plant, and after the first season, strawberries may die. It is also important that much more effort is needed to grow remontant strawberries than when cultivating an ordinary variety. Therefore, experienced gardeners often recommend combining both types, so that in the end you can enjoy a delicious berry three times without any special risks.
Repaired strawberries. Correct fit
Before you start planting, you need to decide whether you will plant ready-made seedlings or grow them yourself. When buying ready-made seedlings, ask the seller in detail about the strawberry variety and growing conditions, buy in trusted places. Examine the bushes carefully for specks and dots. The leaves should be whole and healthy in appearance, the roots up to 5-6 cm in size.
Growing seedlings on your own takes a long way to go, but your own seedlings usually yield the best yields. The seeds need to be planted as early as possible as they need to get the most amount of light. The seeds are planted in well-moistened soil, and sprinkle with dry soil from above. The seed pots are stored in a warm place with a constant humidity level. If all these conditions are met, then the first shoots will appear very soon. After a month and a half, the seedlings can be planted in the soil, but it is worth remembering that our berry is "capricious", therefore, initially it must be "hardened". To do this, the seedlings should be taken out into the fresh air, adding a little time.
Next, you need to prepare the future plot for strawberries. If you want to feast on a fragrant berry already in the coming season, then planting should start in the fall. As a rule, strawberries planted in the new spring season in the first year will not bear fruit. Ideal for berries is soil with an admixture of clay - loam. The site should warm up well, be flat, without marshy areas.
You can plant strawberries in rows for subsequent reproduction with a mustache. In this case, the inter-row distance should be at least 50 - 60 cm. The second landing option is landing with a "carpet".
Before landing, holes are dug in the ground. The roots of the strawberry must be completely buried in the ground to avoid further damage. After that, the hole is buried and the first watering is performed.
Repaired strawberries. Care features
The repair berry needs moisture. The first days should be watered daily, later you can water 2-3 times a week. The damp ground around the bushes must be loosened so that the roots can breathe and develop. Covering the ground around the strawberry with organic mulch or cover material is also ideal.
It is necessary to "feed" remontant strawberries, both at the very beginning before planting, and until the last berries in late autumn.
You need to prune old autumn strawberries in the spring, after which the bushes must be treated from pests. Many gardeners cut off not only the leaves, but also the mustache from the bushes. They can take up space and affect yields. But if your strawberries did not winter well, then the strongest mustache should be left.
You need to start preparing your strawberries for the winter after the first frost. Sawdust and agrofibre are often used for shelter.
Do not forget about the pests of strawberries, such as: aphids, strawberry mites, bears and others. This berry can be susceptible to disease. In order to avoid this, do not forget about timely processing.
You can propagate the berry by dividing the bush, and with the help of a mustache.
The first method is used when there are few bushes and they are more than 2 years old. It is important to plant the separated plant in the ground, which is well warmed up, long before frost.
It is more convenient to enlarge a strawberry plantation with the help of a mustache, it is enough to choose the strongest shoot and sprinkle it with earth. After the new sprouts become strong, they should be separated from the “mother-bush”. But this should be done no earlier than 7 days before planting.
