Clematis and its varieties
Content:
Clematis (Clematis) is considered the most widespread and beloved climbing ornamental flowering plant. It can be seen in almost every garden. A huge variety of varieties, a chic appearance give the plant a special popularity. In this article, we'll talk about the most beloved and well-known varieties of clematis among flower growers.
Description
Another name for clematis is Lomonos. This is a huge group of climbing perennials, which, in turn, have an incredible number of varieties and subspecies. But not all varieties are so wildly popular, because of their growth, exactingness and appearance. They are widely used for the cultivation and decoration of approximately 300 subspecies. They are used for:
- in the form of covering plants,
- growing in open space in gardens and personal plots,
- decoration of terraces, gazebos, balconies,
- hide defects and unsightly walls of various structures.
Further in the article, we will describe the varieties of clematis, from which numerous varieties are formed, without which a beautiful and spectacular garden cannot be imagined. Varieties with large-sized flowers, the flowering period of which begins in May, have won special love and popularity. But botanical varieties are rather less widespread. Most of them give color at the moment when the hybrid varieties form breaks in flowering and development.
Due to the different flowering periods, you can make a composition of these plants that allows you to admire their spring appearance from April to October. Although, choosing certain clematis for growing in your garden is a rather difficult task, given the huge variety of varieties. We advise you to first decide on the size of the flowers and the period of their flowering.
The pruning procedure for those varieties that give color in the spring is done after flowering, in June. Summer varieties undergo this procedure in September, and autumn varieties should be pruned in the spring.
Although there are a colossal number of varieties of clematis, they are completely diverse, but they have one similar feature: the roots in the shade, the ground part in the sun, and a regular pruning procedure.
Varieties
There are a number of classifications of clematis, these are:
1) According to the Royal Horticultural Society:
- Large-flowered
- Small-flowered
2) According to Dr. Howells John:
- With an early flowering period
- With a late flowering period
3) According to Beskaravaynaya: large-flowered curly, large-flowered shrubs, small-flowered and medium-flowered.
4) By belonging to the group of trimming procedures: not requiring this procedure, with not strong pruning (second group), with strong pruning (third group).
In principle, it does not make much sense to understand these classifications at all. Therefore, we will analyze the more popular and well-known types of this culture. In a simplified form, clematis are subdivided into: large-flowered (shrubby and curly), medium-sized, and small-flowered varieties.
Large-flowered varieties
This group of clematis is considered the most common, beautiful and at the same time demanding, which includes varieties with a diameter of their flowers from 15 to 25 centimeters. Often, flowering of these varieties occurs on the branches of the last year, at the end of May and the first half of June. After that, they repeat their flowering, but on new shoots. It is a pity to realize this, but these varieties of clematis have a low level of tolerance to cold and dry periods. Therefore, for the winter season, they must be insulated without fail.
Large-flowered varieties of clematis are rightfully considered the most chic and beautiful. After all, they not only have bright and large flowers, but also a fairly long and lush flowering period. At the moment, there are many such subspecies, in addition, their number is growing at a rapid pace, and they all appear in a new and unusual color scheme.
Flowers of these varieties exist semi-double, terry, simple, and can also have almost all shades, except for green and black. They can even be striped and two-tone. The difference between such subspecies is that they have a different growth rate, requirements for growing and care, and also the duration of the flowering period. There are varieties with an early flowering period and a late flowering period.
Consider the classification by flowering period:
1) Early. The flowering period begins from the beginning of the second half of May on the stems of the last year, and flowering often occurs twice, but the second time already on new shoots. The flowers have a diameter of 15 to 25 centimeters, and the growth is about three meters.
