Apple Palmetta
Content:
MALisavenko, head and initiator of the development of breeding programs for apple and berry crops, once said: “The apple should not be large, the apple should be tasty”. Apple Palmetta belongs to semi-crops, so called varieties that are hybrids between varietal and wild apple trees. Semi-crops can vary in taste and apple size, but generally their fruits are small and sour. Moreover, such varieties have many strong qualities: from the wild apple tree hybrids get frost resistance, are valued for the high content of vitamins in the fruits. In addition, semi-crops are excellent for long-term storage and for the preparation of any winter preparations.
History
Apple Palmetta: photo of the fruits of the variety
The apple variety Palmetta was bred in Novosibirsk, where VN Vasilieva and NV Moiseeva worked on its creation at the Central Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, crossing "Bellefleur-Kitaika" with a Siberian berry apple tree. Initially, the variety was zoned in the Novosibirsk region, but it quickly became popular among gardeners and now it can be found in the gardens of Altai, Kemerovo, Tomsk, Tyumen and Omsk regions.
It should also be noted that the genetic material of the Palmetta apple tree is used to transfer such qualities as frost resistance, early maturity, and yield to varieties. As a result of crossing "Palmetta" with other varieties, several frost-resistant undersized hybrids were obtained.
Apple Palmetta: description and characteristics
Palmetta apple trees are medium-sized trees, their initially rounded compact crown gradually acquires a rounded drooping shape. The leaf plates are colored gray-green. Fruiting occurs on the ringlets.
You will harvest the first crop in the third year after planting the tree. The shape of the fruit resembles a turnip, their weight is no more than forty grams. Light yellow apples are covered with a raspberry "blush", their creamy pulp has a delicate aroma and pleasant spicy taste, they have a delicate fine-grained texture and contain a lot of juice.
Depending on the climatic characteristics of the region, harvesting may take place in early-mid September or in the second half of October. Despite the age of the tree and weather conditions, the yield is regular and can reach 90 kg from one apple tree. With the right storage conditions, you can keep your fruit fresh throughout the fall and winter. For the preparation of pickled apples or compotes, fruits are used as a whole, and apples of this variety also have good gelling properties, therefore, jelly, marmalade, jams and confitures, as well as the usual jam, jam, dried fruits and freezing, are prepared from them.
Apple Palmetta: advantages and disadvantages
Semi-crops in general and the Palmetta apple tree in particular do not amaze the imagination with either the taste or the size of the apples. However, why do gardeners love this variety so much? In Eastern and Western Siberia, not every fruit tree will delight the gardener with an annual bountiful harvest. However, even after cold winters and in dry years, the Palmetta apple tree always boasts a harvest, sometimes so plentiful that foliage cannot be seen behind the apples.
The undoubted advantages of the Palmetta apple variety include the following qualities:
- Winter hardiness.
- Long shelf life of fruits.
- Regular and high yields.
- Scab resistant.
- During the flowering period, the scent of apple blossoms resembles the scent of magnolia.
The disadvantages of the apple tree Palmetta include the small size of apples, as well as some demanding care: without annual pruning, the crown of the apple tree becomes too thick, and therefore the yield may decrease.
