Apple tree Kutuzovets
Content:
The Kutuzovets apple tree is considered a representative of winter breeding varieties, in which the fruits can be consumed almost until the new harvest. This variety is one of the most famous and popular in Europe due to the fact that it is considered an excellent representative for production on an industrial scale. Having decided to plant this subspecies of apple trees on your personal plot, you will be able to provide yourself with apples of good quality and taste for the entire winter period for quite a long time to come.
Apple tree Kutuzovets: variety description and characteristics
Apple tree Kutuzovets: photo of the variety
The Kutuzovets apple variety appeared in the mid-thirties of the 20th century at the Zhigulevskiye Sady Research Institute of Horticulture and Medicinal Plants. Bred it S.P. Kedrin, thanks to the crossing of such apple varieties as Reneta Simirenko and Skryzhapel.
The Kutuzovets apple tree is medium-sized, has a round, flat crown and medium thickening. The older the plant, the more spreading the crown of the tree becomes, which undoubtedly facilitates the care of the apple tree.
The skeletal branches of the Kutuzovets apple tree are firmly attached to the trunk. Perennial shoots have a greenish-brown tint. The crown of the tree is entirely covered with small leaves, which have a shiny surface and a dark green tint. These leaves have an oval oblong shape and a curled tip. There is pubescence on the lower part of the leaflet.
When ripe, the fruits of the Kutuzovets apple tree have an average size, they can reach a weight of about 125 grams each. Apples are endowed with a flat-round shape and wide ribbing. The main difference between the fruits is their one-dimensionality, a yellow tint with a slight blush, due to which the fruit looks like a marbled one. On the entire surface of the fetus there are subcutaneous points of a dark color. The apple skin is not tough and not quite thick. The funnel of the fruit is deep enough, has a golden orange tint.
Features of the apple variety Kutuzovets
Like any other variety, the Kutuzovets apple tree has its positive and negative sides. The advantages of this subspecies include the fact that under good conditions this variety is considered one of the best winter representatives of apple trees for industrial production. Among the disadvantages of the Kutuzovets apple tree, one can single out small characteristics of resistance to frost. But in this case, it is worth noting that the semi-dwarf stock and the seed stock increase the level of cold tolerance.
The apple tree Kutuzovets belongs to medium-sized crops. In adulthood, the tree is three to four meters tall. Some farmers begin to form a plant in the second year of life, as a result of which, at maturity, growth does not exceed 2.5-3 meters.
The trunk of the tree, as well as its skeletal stems, are endowed with a brownish-green tint. Young branches have a significant difference in color. They are lighter in color, or rather pale brown in color.
Fruiting in the Kutuzovets apple variety does not differ in its regularity and does not have a very pronounced periodicity. But the correct and high-quality conduct of agrotechnical measures, as well as anti-aging pruning, can smooth out this minus of the variety.
In a good season, on private plots, the yield can reach an average of 60 kilograms from one apple tree. If we consider on an industrial scale, then this figure is about 115 centners per hectare.
The inside of these fruits has a greenish tint, juiciness and good density. The taste of these fruits is quite classic - sweet, with a small amount of sourness. The taste of the pulp has a spicy shade with a small aftertaste, which is similar to the Skryzhapel variety. When tasting such fruits, a score of 4 points was given.
If we consider the option of growing in a temperate climate, then the frost resistance of this variety is at a good level. And being in the most severe and difficult climate, resistance has an average or low indicator. A distinctive feature of this subspecies is considered to be good restorative ability.
Another distinctive feature of the Kutuzovets apple tree is a high level of immunity to fruit rot disease. For powdery mildew, this indicator has an average value, but about scab, opinions differ among farmers. Therefore, we can conclude that a lot depends on agricultural technology and climate in the place of growth. Some growers claim that the tenacity is average, and some that it is low.
Apple tree Kutuzovets: planting

Also, like almost all other varieties of apple trees, the Kutuzovets apple tree sapling can be planted both in the spring and in the autumn. For spring planting, this procedure must be carried out before bud break. In the case of an autumn planting, approximately two weeks before the arrival of frost.
Finding the right place to disembark is very important. This area should be sufficiently illuminated, but strongly ventilated areas for the seedling are contraindicated. Another important factor is the location and mobility of groundwater. They should be at least two meters from the soil surface. When mass planting, it is very important to consider the distance between the seedlings. It should be at least 4 meters apart in rows, and five meters apart between rows.
Before planting an apple tree, Kutuzovets should prepare a planting hole for a seedling in advance. It should be at least 50 centimeters deep and about one meter wide. When digging a hole, its upper fertile layer should be mixed with organic matter and mineral fertilizers, after which this mixture should be poured into the bottom of the hole by one third. Then another third of the hole is filled with fertile soil without any additives and a seedling is placed, its roots are gently straightened, after which it is covered with fertile soil. It is very important not to leave air voids in the rhizome when planting, otherwise decay and death of the tree can occur quite quickly. With the right actions, the root collar will protrude about three centimeters above the soil surface. After that, the seedling is watered, and a small peg-support is driven in next to it, to which this seedling is tied (for the first three to four years).
Apple tree Kutuzovets: leaving
Mandatory agrotechnical measures include such procedures as: watering, feeding, pruning and processing.
Watering
The very first and most important activity for caring for this tree to get a good harvest is irrigation. Many amateur gardeners mistakenly assume that frequent and abundant watering will only help the tree, but this is not the case. The watering procedure should be carried out in stages:
- Until the bud breaks.
- Three to four weeks after the flowering period.
- Two weeks before harvest.
- Late autumn (in October) to avoid freezing on dry soil.
It is also required to observe the amount of liquid volume when watering:
- In the first two years of life, after planting, the tree will need about 30 liters of water for one irrigation procedure.
- At the age of three to five years, an average of 60 liters is required at a time.
- In adulthood, about 90 liters of liquid per tree is consumed per watering.
Top dressing
In the first year after planting, the seedling is not required for feeding, the nutrients that were laid in the planting hole are quite enough. The introduction of fertilizing becomes necessary as the plant develops and grows. In the spring, for active growth, it is necessary to apply nitrogen-containing fertilizers. For this, half a kilogram of urea and 40 grams of nitroammofosk are suitable. It is possible to replace this by introducing manure into the near-trunk circle by the method of digging, in the amount of five buckets. In dry weather, at the time of flowering, it would be good to feed the apple tree with this composition: dissolve 300 grams of urea, 70 grams of potassium sulfate and 100 grams of superphosphate in a bucket of water. Or you can still replace it with a liquid organic solution. At a fairly mature age of the apple tree, 60 liters of this infusion will be enough. The next top dressing should be applied during the period of fruit formation. And then, during the summer season, it is best to apply foliar feeding. Such top dressing, which is applied on the leaf, will most quickly be able to enrich the culture with necessary and important micronutrients. In the autumn, top dressing should be applied to the area of the trunk circle. For this, complex nutrient mixtures are used, or a layer of mulch is poured into the trunk circle, which serves as humus.
Treatment
This procedure consists in spraying the tree from harmful insects. Another important activity will be to whitewash the trunk and skeletal stems in the spring, this will help to avoid the likelihood of getting spring sunburn.
Apple pruning Kutuzovets
Each year, a pruning and shaping procedure should be carried out for this tree. And also all year round it is required to carry out sanitary pruning:
- All broken, dry and damaged stems during the winter are cut off.
- The tree trunk must be cleaned of damaged and old bark.
In the apple tree, the Kutuzovets crown has an average thickening, therefore it does not need special shaping or pruning. Most often, crown rejuvenation and sanitary pruning are performed.
Apple pollinator varieties Kutuzovets
This subspecies is pollinated by insects. Because of this, it should be planted near other apple varieties of the same flowering period in order to improve the pollination process. The best pollinators are: Spartak, Antonovka, Northern Sinap.
Apple tree Kutuzovets: features of fruiting and ripening
Apple tree Kutuzovets: photo of the variety
The apple tree Kutuzovets is not considered a fast-growing variety. The first period of fruiting comes only 5-6 years after the planting of a one-year young tree. Basically, fruits are formed on spears, ringlets and twigs. On a very young plant, ringlets are not involved in the formation.
The flowering period of the Kutuzovets apple tree begins in the second week of May, at which time the tree is strewn with small flowers of a pinkish-white hue.
At the end of September, the fruits of this apple tree are already ripe for harvesting. It is worth noting that ripe fruits are able to hang on the tree for a fairly long amount of time without falling off, which is quite convenient. They can be on the apple tree even after the first snow falls and the arrival of frost.
Consumer ripeness of fruits comes only in November, and sometimes only in December. If you store these apples in the cellar, then they are able to retain all their qualities until May. If you create all the necessary conditions for storing these fruits, then they are able to retain all their characteristics even until the next harvest.
Varieties
- On a semi-dwarf rootstock... Anis seedlings are the best for grafting this subspecies. And for this, half-dwarfs are the best stock option. In the case of a dwarf rootstock, in the future it will cause inconvenience for the farmer to care for. The tree has too small growth and poor development, which also causes inconvenience in processing its near-trunk circle.
- Winter... Winter Kutuzovets, which is quite successfully grown in the Urals, is grafted onto a dwarf seed stock of the OKS.
Regions of apple growing Kutuzovets
The most popular apple variety Kutuzovets received in the Middle Volga region. Grows well and develops well in temperate climates. Also, a good development of this apple tree was recorded in the Ulyanovsk, Orenburg and Lipetsk regions, as well as in Bashkiria. Good reviews come from gardeners in Ukraine and Belarus.
Very often you can come across such a question from gardeners: why does this hybrid have so few leaves? This is mistake. The foliage on this tree is quite enough for the full development of the apple tree. A small level of foliage is a varietal feature. During flowering, there are no leaves on the tree at all, and this is a natural component. Foliage can greatly interfere with the pollination process. Therefore, after flowering, foliage will immediately begin to form on the tree.
Apple tree Kutuzovets: reviews
Apple tree Kutuzovets is a fairly widespread and popular subspecies. Due to its late ripening and long shelf life, as well as the minimum expenditure of effort in care, this culture is quite fond of not only individual gardeners, but also industrial ones.
You can hear and read a lot of reviews about this subspecies. Here are some of them:
- We bought the Kutuzovets apple tree a long time ago. I can't say anything bad about her. We like both the density of apples and their taste. An even greater plus I think that this tree does not need any special care, the most important thing is to periodically feed and carry out sanitary pruning. Oksana
- We tried to grow the Kutuzovets apple tree in the Urals. Of course, there are also the best varieties for this region, but friends from Saratov recommended. Over the course of five years, the apple tree has generally pleased us, it has developed quite well. But she could not withstand the long frost and died. Irina
- I can't say anything about how the Kutuzovets apple tree shows itself in industrial production, but this culture has been growing on my personal plot for about 12 years. In one year there was a scab lesion, but small, and the treatment was carried out on time. For the rest, I have no complaints. My family is happy. The most important thing, in my opinion, is that very little time is spent on caring for the Kutuzovets apple tree. Sergei
