Curly roses

Brief classification of roses
Rose is a very popular culture among gardeners, landscape designers. Roses are very diverse varietiesthat appeared thanks to breeders from all over the world. Many farmers have already lost count, some have about twenty-five thousand varieties, others claim that the figure reaches more than fifty thousand varieties. curly roses are considered one of the most peculiar varieties.
The classification of this culture is constantly changing. This is due to the fact that it is simply not possible to create it based on plant species. There were multiple crosses within and between these species and it is very difficult to understand where it originates from. In this regard, the pink classification was based on the properties of certain varieties, both biological and from a decorative point of view. At the moment, roses are divided into areas of application in design. Due to the fact that the varieties are becoming more and more, the classification is constantly growing and changing.
Roughly speaking, all plants of the Pink family belong to one of three large groups:
1) Types of roses that grow in the form of wild plants.
2) Roses that appeared before 1867. These varieties did not undergo any changes. It was in this year that the first tea rose hybrid was bred. It was she who became the first among the roses of our time. The old selection certainly does not shine with scale and beauty as modern plants. But among the roses of the "old generation" there are many beautiful and worthy varieties
3) Modern roses. This is the name of the plants that were bred after 1867.
Characteristics of climbing and climbing roses
Many gardeners are a little confused when talking about climbing and climbing roses. The fact is that curly roses do not exist as such, since neither the rosehip (the ancestor of the rose) nor the rose can curl. The only thing they have in this regard is the thorns, with the help of which they cling to the supports. This happens only if you help the plants by directing and fixing the shoots of the plant in the right position.
Climbing roses are divided into two categories: small-flowered and large-flowered. They, as you might guess, differ in appearance. Let's dwell on each group in more detail.
Climbing roses with small flowers.
It is precisely these plants that are mistaken for climbing varieties of roses. These varieties have a flexible shoot structure. The stems are quite elongated in length, capable of arcing or creeping. For such roses, a support is required. In their height, as a rule, they reach five meters. As a rule, these roses have large, brush-shaped inflorescences. They, in turn, consist of small flowers, which reach two to three centimeters in size. Such flowers have a stunning bright aroma.
After a successful wintering, such a plant will delight you with its flowering, it will be abundant and very beautiful. The main disadvantage of such roses is that most of these varieties can bloom only once per season. But the flowering is very abundant and long, about six to seven weeks.
Breeders are trying their best to create varieties that will bloom more than once per season, which will have a strong smelling flower and a large size.
Among the special characteristics of this variety of roses is the fact that the plants bloom on last year's stems, which are very thin and survived the winter. For this reason, these varieties are quite difficult to grow in areas with harsh winters. Plants tolerate cold temperatures well, but nevertheless the stems are so tender that they often freeze out. True, after this, new shoots grow quite in a short time, but the plant blooms poorly, and sometimes does not give flowers at all. Good shelter can be a salvation.
Climbing roses with large flowers.
These roses have a very elegant appearance. They bloom, as a rule, throughout the summer. Such plants have powerful thick stems. In their length, they can often reach about four meters. The flowers are grouped in rather loose inflorescences, there are not very many of them. But the flowers themselves are large in size. Such roses bloom on the stems of the current year.
For this reason, the pluses include the fact that the branches that froze last year cannot influence the flowering process in any way. The stems grow quite actively. For this reason, a plant that is quite frozen will be able to give new shoots one and a half meter high and even bloom.
Roses, whose stems in their height reach no more than one and a half to two meters, do not need support. Therefore, gardeners and designers use this variety for a "living fence", or grow it as an independent spreading shrub. True, some still tie the plants to supports, and this is not forbidden, however, with roses that curl this trick is much easier to do.
Let's talk a little about where the curly varieties of roses came from. Officially, it was a cross between Multiflora and Vihur's Rosehip. These plants are wild plants. Let's talk a little about each of them.
Multiflora.
This plant is a multi-flowered rose hip. Japan is considered the homeland of this culture, according to other sources it is Korea and Fr. Taiwan. This plant has rather long stems, flexible in structure, in their length can reach about three meters. There are quite a few flowers, one in diameter reaches about two centimeters. As a rule, they are white or pink in color. The aroma is delicate, a little cinnamon tone is guessed.
When this culture appeared in Europe, most gardeners were pleasantly surprised by such a find, and today Multiflora can often be seen in park areas. Such rose hips are often planted to create a “living fence”. The flowering is very lush and abundant, usually over one month.
Vihura's rosehip.
This variety came to Europe from Asian countries (China, Philippines, Korea, Japan). On the territory of these countries, such a dog rose is a very beautiful overgrown shrubs. Plants are spreading, rather tall, can reach a couple of meters. As for the width, here it is still more overall, the shrubs grow in width up to six meters! Vihura's flowers are large enough, about one and a half to three centimeters. As a rule, they are white or pink in color. The flowers have a very pleasant bright aroma.
Rules for the formation of climbing roses
For climbing varieties of roses, a support must be installed. The fact is that the shoots of such plants are quite elongated and with a flexible structure, and they tie up quite easily. With all this, there are roses in which the shoots almost do not bend and in length they are not too prominent. But they are still classified as climbing roses for the reason that they give flowers not on new shoots, but on the stems of the last year, like all climbing varieties.
Roses that can curl tend to be fan-shaped. Shoots are tied to a reliable support.Do not fasten the wire too tight. Since over time, the stem will get fat, and the wire will simply transmit it.
Thick shoots produce thin branches that are directed vertically. Flowers will appear on them. Young stems cannot be cut off for wintering. You do not need to do this even if it is not fully ripe. Better to cover them better for the winter. Such shoots must be preserved, because the flowers will appear next year directly on them.
Often, gardeners and designers plant this kind of roses near the arches. The formation of such varieties of roses should occur immediately, since curly roses add quickly to growth. And if you neglect pruning even one season, then it will be quite difficult to give a beautiful shape in the future.
