Growing lettuce
In the modern world, there are a large number of types of salad. Some of them are: lettuce, iceberg lettuce, Chinese cabbage, leafy lettuce, arugula, Chinese cabbage.
Salad is one of those products that contain a small amount of calories and a large amount of nutrients. This product is dietary and medicinal. You can provide yourself with such a product by planting a salad on a windowsill or on a site.
On the site, planting lettuce is possible every two weeks, thus you can enjoy the harvest all summer. Like many cultures, lettuce can be early, mid and late. It grows for about twenty-five days.
You can plant a salad in the spring if the air temperature is above zero at night. It is best to land on the growing moon.
Planting lettuce is possible not only in the open air, but also on window sills, in greenhouses. This crop can be planted by seedling and seed methods. The seedling method is needed in a harsh climate or if you want to get the salad earlier (it rises two or three weeks earlier).
The following varieties are popular: Excitement, Dubrava, Iceberg, Romain, Gelbus
For a good harvest, it is recommended to plant the salad in fertilized soil that is rich in minerals. Lettuce will grow well with good lighting and airing (drafts are not desirable). It is better to plant it on a hill than in a lowland, as there is a risk of root rot.
It is best to start preparing the soil for planting lettuce in the fall. It is advisable to enrich it with humus and dig it up. In the spring, it is worth digging up again and applying mineral fertilizers (ammonium sulfate, superphosphate, potassium salt and others) two to three weeks before the planned planting.
For better fertility, the soil can be fertilized with peat, humus, wood ash, perlite sand, compost. In this case, the soil becomes not only richer, but also looser, which is very good for a salad.
Also, the landing site can be treated with a weak solution of potassium permanganate or boiling water for disinfection. Before planting, the ground is leveled, breaking all the lumps.
To get a good harvest, you need to choose seeds with a germination rate of at least 80 percent. How to do it? You need to prepare a three to five percent solution of sodium chloride. Then pour the solution over the seeds for fifteen to twenty minutes.
Seeds that float need to be thrown away. The grains that remain are considered the best. The water will need to be drained and the remaining seeds rinsed with water. Next, the seeds must be dried and then soaked again for fifteen minutes, but already in a solution of potassium permanganate for disinfection.
To check the seeds for how they germinate, you need to select several seeds, you can have different varieties. They are placed in a damp cloth. Germinating seeds will be those that hatch in one to two days.
To speed up the growth of lettuce, you can soak the seeds in a nutrient solution. The following fertilizers are well suited for this: epin, ideal, epin-extra.
Before planting a salad, you need to water and loosen the ground in a few days. The salad should be planted at a distance of no more than three centimeters between the grains.
The sowing depth should be one to two centimeters. The recommended distance between bushes is 20-30 centimeters. A distance of ten to fifteen centimeters is kept between the rows.
Salad is an unpretentious culture and it is not difficult to grow a salad, even for a novice gardener. Performing consistent actions in growing lettuce will lead to the desired result. Grow the salad yourself and enjoy it.
