Growing yoshta: agricultural technology, proper planting and care features
Content:
Very often you can find such shrubs as gooseberries and currants on our plots. But there is also another unusual plant called yoshta. In this article, you will read about growing yoshta, about caring for this plant and how to reproduce it.
Yoshta: description and characteristics of berries
The variety was bred by breeders for a long time, but to this day it is not very popular. However, in vain, because those who have already planted this plant on their site are very happy with the harvest, since the yoshta fruits are very useful - they normalize the blood composition, have a beneficial effect on the gastrointestinal tract, it is very good to take the fruits for vascular diseases and ARVI ... More about planting and growing techniques in this article.
Yoshta is very similar to currants with large berries or even gooseberries. And not in vain, because the breeders bred the plant by crossing the famous berry bushes.
The name of this plant was given from the German language. After that, other breeders tried to breed this hybrid, and they did it well. This is how other plants appeared under the names yohne or moro. These plants differ from each other, both in appearance and in taste.
Yoshta is a shrub that does not exceed 150 cm in height. The bush is lush, spreading, without thorns. The shrub branches live for a very long time, and the plant does not require constant crown formation due to the small number of roots.
A distinctive advantage is that the plant is resistant to common pests of these shrubs and has good frost resistance. Therefore, growing yoshta does not cause any particular difficulties.
Growing yoshta: growing conditions
To successfully grow yoshta on your site, you need to know a few rules.
Growing yoshta begins with choosing the right bush for planting. Here you need to look at the age of the plant, since a younger seedling will better take root in a new place.
Also, when buying, you need to pay attention to the roots of the plant. The root system must be strong. Do not take seedlings with dried or injured roots. The bark of a good seedling should be even, without any cracks and smooth. You can even cut off a part of the bark, and see - it is important that the inner layer is green.
Having bought a seedling, you need to wrap its roots with a wet cloth and carefully wrap it in a bag on top.
You can plant a seedling in the spring, or in the fall. Yoshta grows both in a sunny place and in a shaded area.
If you want to grow yoshta for the purpose of harvesting a large harvest, then you need to choose areas with fertile soil located in the sun. Before planting, it is necessary to prepare a place in advance, namely to clear the land of weeds, and also apply the necessary fertilizers if the land is not fertile.
After you have already bought a tree for planting and prepared a suitable place, you can start the process itself.
The spring period is suitable for this. First, you need to dig a deep hole, about 50 by 50 cm - the size will depend on the root system. The pit must be filled with compost, superphosphate, and ash must be added, and everything must be thoroughly mixed with the ground. Then fill a little less than half of the hole with the mixture, and then just fill the earth and fill the mound with water. After the moisture is completely absorbed, a seedling is already planted in the hole, carefully distributing the roots, and the hole is buried. The seedling must be watered again, and the soil around it must be mulched. Peat, hay or grass are perfect mulch. The main thing is that the layer is at least 10 cm.
If you are planting a seedling in the fall season, the process will be similar.
Yoshta: care during and after growing
The successful cultivation of yoshta also depends on the care of this crop. Here the process is easier than caring for a gooseberry or currant bush. It is necessary to loosen the ground around the bushes, remove weeds in time, water the bush and do not forget about fertilizers.
Mulching the soil is very important here, as the soil will always have the necessary levels of nutrients and moisture. In addition, you will have to loosen it less. The same humus or compost or peat can also be used as mulch. A layer of mulch will protect the bush from weeds while keeping moisture from evaporating.
As for watering yoshta, she loves a lot of water. If there is not enough water, then the bush will stop growing and developing, so regular watering is necessary throughout the season. If summer is dry, then watering should be increased.
It is best to water the plants in the morning or after the sun has gone down. It is better to make small potassium around the trunk so that the water does not spread further than the roots and so that the moisture does not evaporate.
In addition to berries, yoshta is also grown for decorative purposes. In this case, you do not need to feed the plant. But in order to get a large number of berries that will delight in taste, you need to regularly fertilize the plant. Organic fertilizers are used, for example, mullein solution, as well as other elements: superphosphate, potassium sulfate. It is brought under the bush in the fall, and superphosphate must be added in the spring.
As elsewhere, this plant is often attacked by pests. Aphids, ticks, butterflies. If you notice signs of plant disease, it is necessary to fight them with various insecticides, such as Akarin, Kleschevit, Agravertin or Biotlin, and so on. It is necessary to carry out timely preventive measures. Thus, in the spring, before the formation of buds, and also when the plant has finished growing in the fall, the bush must be sprayed with a solution of Bordeaux liquid or a solution of urea. Copper sulfate is also suitable. But of all the options, urea is best recommended, since here you will not only rid the plants of pests, but also fill the soil with nitrogen.
As for pruning the bush and forming the crown of the yoshta, in the spring it is necessary to remove broken, diseased and dried branches, also remove frozen stems, and shorten healthy ones by a third if the plants are already adults.
In the fall, you need to do the same.
Shrub propagation
Yoshta propagates by cuttings, layering and dividing the bush. Here, everyone chooses a convenient breeding method. If you decide to propagate the plant by division, then this must be done in the fall.
The bush should be dug out, the roots should be cleaned, then the bush should be divided with a pruning shears, leaving on each half, both roots and stems with leaves. Both parts are planted in new locations.
Reproduction by cuttings occurs in the spring. You can take fresh young twigs or old shoots, about three years old. It is necessary to cut them off, leaving several buds on each. The length of the handle must be at least 20 cm.
If you are using old cuttings, then the cut branches are dropped into the ground at an angle at a distance of 70 or 60 cm from each other, leaving a couple of buds above the ground. The earth also needs to be tamped, watered and mulched. Better to do it in the fall.
You can cut off young cuttings in the spring, remove the lower leaves, and cut off the upper leaves by about 1/3, and plant in the soil.Having made a section over each bud, the shoots must be held in special solutions that stimulate the formation of the root system, and then they should be planted next to each other also at an angle.
These cuttings are placed in a greenhouse, then gradually open it for a while for airing, improving the rooting of the seedlings, and when the seedlings are hardened, the greenhouse is completely opened.
To propagate the plant by layering, this must be done in the spring, after the soil has thawed. Young shoots must be laid out in dug ditches and well strengthened there. Sprinkle the tops of the plants with earth. After the shoot gives new shoots, you need to constantly spud them.
The next year, shoots that are well rooted are separated and transplanted to a new place.
Harvesting
Yoshta berries during cultivation do not ripen simultaneously, but gradually, over 2 or 3 weeks. The size and taste can also vary. Already in the middle of summer, you can harvest and eat berries, both fresh and they will perfectly fit for various harvests. They make delicious jams, jellies, compotes and juices. The taste of the berries will depend on the weather and growing conditions.
Thus, if you have almost all trees and shrubs on your site, it's time to plant yoshta as well. The shrub does not require special attention to itself and will surprise you with tasty and healthy fruits.
