Choosing the best strawberry variety
It is very rare to find a person who does not like strawberries. The taste of this sweet berry is enjoyed by both young children and adults. It is also quite rare to see a gardener who does not grow strawberries on his plot, even on seemingly unsuitable soil for growing. It is problematic to select the best strawberry variety for growing, since there are a lot of strawberry varieties, and each of them has its own characteristics and advantages.
All varieties of strawberries can still be divided into "remontant" and "ordinary".
Repair strawberry is able to bear fruit continuously throughout the summer, while the ordinary one gives a crop a maximum of once per summer season.
When choosing a variety, other requirements must be observed.
Since strawberries are perennial berries, when choosing a variety, you need to take into account how much it is able to withstand various pests, how it tolerates diseases, and how much crop you can expect from the selected variety.
The optimal and profitable solution would be to plant several varieties of berries on your site at once, different in terms of their ripening (early or late ripening). Then you can pick berries from late spring until the first frost.
It is worth considering the climatic conditions of your region and the quality of the soil, as they directly affect the yield and quality of strawberries.
Consider the most popular strawberry varieties, which are almost 100% likely to be found in any specialty store.
Of the early varieties, Macherauch is very popular. Berries of this variety are very sweet, and their color is rich raspberry. The "Zarya" variety is also referred to the early ripening ones. Its bushes can grow very tall, and in terms of taste, it is slightly sour than Maherauhi. "Zarya" perfectly tolerates the cold, but when she leaves, it is necessary to remember about its moisture-loving nature, periodically supplying it with abundant watering.
Popular mid-season varieties include strawberries "Festivalnaya". Such strawberries are distinguished by their ability to produce very large yields of large and sweet berries.
There are varieties that have come to us from other countries and have successfully rooted in the Russian garden plots of many summer residents.
For example, the Red Gauntlet variety came to us from Great Britain. Such a variety initially has strong immunity, due to which it is resistant to many diseases and pests. The Everest variety was brought to us from France. It also gives a rich harvest, but is distinguished by its light fruits and a slightly sour taste in the berries. These strawberries can be harvested from mid-June until the fall frost.
Strawberry called "Queen Elizabeth" is very famous in Russia. This variety belongs to the remontant species. This variety is distinguished by large bushes of sweet, slightly shiny, rich red berries. The weight of such strawberries can reach up to forty grams, which is a lot for one berry. Also, "Queen Elizabeth" tolerates frost and various diseases well (of course, with good care). However, such strawberries rarely give antennae.
Of the usual varieties, it is worth highlighting the variety "Mashenka". It is often grown on plantations, since this variety tolerates various even long-term transportation well. It is resistant to various kinds of diseases, and its berries have a very strong attractive aroma.
The dark red berries are characteristic of the variety called Zenga Zangana. The strawberries are not large, rather medium in size. Many people like this variety for its good adaptation during cold weather, so typical for our region.
Of course, these are not all varieties of strawberries. There are really a lot of them, and by going to the seed store you can spend hours choosing the best variety for yourself.
If you want to always be able to find fresh ripe berries on your plot during the summer season, you should not experiment with several varieties that are new to you at once. It would be a good idea to plant already "proven" strawberries in most beds, and give a small part for new varieties (in this case, you will get confidence in a rich harvest, and check for frost resistance, yield and taste characteristics of new varieties).
Not so long ago, a new strawberry variety was introduced. It has a white color even when ripe. The taste of such a strawberry is a bit like the taste of pineapple, and the berries themselves are very fragrant. However, despite all the unusualness of the variety, gardeners rarely choose it for planting in their garden.
Of course, you don't have to grow strawberries on your plot, because by the fall, in any market, a grandmother sits at every step and sells delicious large berries. but still, it is much more enjoyable to eat your own grown strawberries, in which you have invested a lot of effort.
