At the moment there are many varieties of Kishmish, but not all are missing seeds, in fact there are very few of them. Among them there are those that contain seeds, but very soft and so small that they are not felt at all when consumed. one of these is the Rusbol grape, which we will discuss in more detail in this article.
Kishmish grapes: briefly about the varieties
Kishmish is a grape that does not leave indifferent either the lovers of these berries, or those who love to grow them. The reason for this is its amazingly delicate taste and lack of seeds, which allows them to be included in the diet of young children.
All Kishmish varieties are divided into four categories. Those that belong to the first two categories do not have seed germs at all or have, but are poorly formed. Their fruits are small, weighing no more than 4 grams.
Those that belong to the other two categories have seed buds and they are felt during eating, but there are more than twice as many of them and one berry can reach 9 grams.
Interesting to know! The seed buds can change in their number and size from one season to the next. The hotter the summer months, the larger they are and may even look like a real big bone, which cannot be used as seed, given that you should not wait for seedlings from it.
Rusbol is one of the Kishmish varieties, which also has such names as Mirage and Soviet-Bulgarian White. It has the fourth category, which means the presence of seed germs in it. Today it is this variety, perhaps the most popular among gardeners.
In order for beginners to plant the Rusbol grape variety in their garden, we must share detailed information about this plant.
Creation of the Rusbol variety
Rusbol grapes: photo of the variety
Rusbol grapes were created thanks to the joint work of scientists from the Potapenko All-Russian Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking and Bulgarian scientists. It was from here that the name appeared, combining the two works of the two countries. It was bred by crossing the Superearly seedless variety and Villard blanc and entered into the State Register as an achievement in breeding.
Rusbol grapes: variety description
Kishmish Rusbol is an early ripening variety, which is an absolute advantage, allowing it to be grown not only in the southern regions of the country. The first harvest can be started after only 4 months, and in the case of a cool summer, after 4, 5 months.
At the beginning of its development, Rusbol is of medium size, but later it grows well and therefore it is classified as a tall plant.
The vine ripens early and very well, each eye on the base of the branch bears excellent fruit and always produces a shoot that bears fruit. When trimming such shoots, it is necessary to leave from 2 to 8 eyes on them.
Flowering begins early in the form of a full ridge. It has a rich aroma, enveloping the entire garden and attracting insects that pollinate not only Rusbol, but all nearby grape bushes.
Rusbol grapes bring large yields, which can be overloaded with them, therefore it is very important that the bunches are normalized on the shoots. If the inflorescence is large, then it is better to cut off its tip, this will affect, for the better, the size of the berries and their attractive appearance. Annual growth will ripen a little slower in case of a high yield.
The propagation of Rusbol grape raisins through cuttings is very good, since the cuttings take root very quickly and easily, giving roots.
The vine begins to bear fruit two or three years after planting the seedlings in the ground.
A completely different graft can be used for this type of grape, as it will work with most rootstocks, but with a tall rootstock, you will get the best results.
When pruning a plant, it is important to remove shoots from 5 to 10 centimeters long, while choosing the weakest ones, this contributes to more active growth and development of other shoots.
Rusball is highly resistant to frost and can do without shelters down to -25 degrees, but it is very important that there is enough snow, at least 50 centimeters.
This variety is not afraid that its buds may freeze, unlike other varieties, since in case of freezing, new ones will appear, and the fact that Rusbol has high fertility will not leave you without a harvest of delicious berries.
The plant requires shelter during the first three years of its development in order to accumulate perennial wood. It is on it that the resistance of the buds to frost is 8 degrees higher than on annuals.
Kishmish Rusbol grapes are distinguished by very good resistance to many diseases that are inherent in grapes of other varieties. In the southern territories, it is suitable for growing in a high-stem culture. As for the more northern areas, there the formation takes place on a low trunk and the arms are left of medium length. The short-sleeved formation also gives good yields.
The size of the bunches of this vine is always large and, with due care, can weigh more than one kilogram.
They have a conical shape and medium friability.
Rusbol grapes are unusual for large raisins. Their width reaches 16 mm, and their length is 18 mm.
They are painted white and have seed rudiments. Berries contain about 21% sugar and no more than 7g / l. acids, have a simple and very rich taste.
The fruits of this variety are used as table fruits, but they can also be sent for processing to obtain raisins.
Interesting to know! Wasps are not afraid of Rusbol grapes, as they cannot damage them. Berries can remain on the bushes for a long time after they are fully ripe and do not deteriorate. However, it is worth harvesting on time so that the vine has time to fully ripen.
Scientists who bred the Rusbol variety talk about the possibility of growing it in the Moscow region or even more northern regions without shelter.
Grape variety Rusbol improved: advantages
In addition to the Rusbol variety, the Potapenko Research Institute also bred another variety - Rusbol improved. Its appearance was due to the crossing of the varieties Delight and Villard blanc.
This culture has many of the virtues it received from its parents.
The ripening time of this plant has decreased and now ranges from 3 to 4 months. It has enhanced growth, ripening of annual growths and rooting of cuttings is excellent, most rootstocks are compatible with it. The improved Rusbol variety begins to bear fruit two years after planting in open ground. The buds of this plant bear 95% fruit, which is an excellent result. Like Rusbol, the new variety needs rationing of the brushes so that large yields do not overload the bush.
The improved Rusball also has excellent resistance to winter cold down to -25 degrees. It is always a grateful plant and, in case of decent care, brings large yields of appetizing fruits. The weight of just one bunch can exceed one and a half kilograms. The fruits also became larger. In width, they still reach 16 mm, but the length is already 20 mm. The shape of the berries can be round, oval, or it can resemble the shape of an egg. They are painted white, and in the south of the country they can have a shade of brown. The pulp is dense, sweet and has a very pleasant, harmonious taste. Taking into account the fact that the variety is of the fourth category, seed rudiments are contained inside the fruit.
The variety has good immunity and is not susceptible to most diseases, unlike its “brothers”.
Rusbola variety
Scientists did not stop at the creation of improved Rusbol and brought out another variety, which they called Muscat Rusbol. It was created by all the same scientists, crossing between stable Bulgaria and Rusbol. This variety also has its own characteristics that slightly differ from its predecessors.
The new variety is appreciated for its nutmeg taste among many grape lovers. Unlike other types of Rusbol, its fruits have a longer shelf life and do not lose their properties. You can easily make raisins from Rusbol grapes at home.
Rusbol nutmeg belongs to early ripening varieties. Ripe berries can be harvested 4 months after planting. The development time of the plant is average and can be long if you planted a seedling grown from a cuttings. Ripening of annual growths is good, but in the case of large yields, the bush is overloaded and ripening is slower. This is especially true if the weather is rainy outside.
- Despite the fact that the shoots bear fruit a little less than the parents of this variety, nevertheless, its fertility is high and is at least 75%.
- Vines are pruned at the level of 3 to 8 eyes.
- It has been noticed that Muscat Rusbol turns out better if it is grafted onto a vigorous stock.
- The plant tolerates frosts well down to -24 degrees and is resistant to diseases such as mildew. As for such a disease as oidium, here the plant needs prevention, since it is susceptible to it.
Unlike its parents, Muscat Rusbol has not such large clusters. The weight of one, as a rule, does not exceed half a kilogram. Their shapes can be conical, branched, or cylinder-like.
Inside each berry are seed rudiments.
Rusbol grapes: variety care
As for leaving, here it is the same for all types of Rusbol and other table varieties.
- The vine needs regular, timely and abundant watering. Top dressing is also an integral part of care and should be carried out in accordance with the rules and at the right time. The improved Rusball is especially demanding for this.
- Removal of weakened, non-yielding shoots is necessary for rationing the yield.
- During the summer season and in the fall, formative pruning should be carried out.
- During the first three years of life, Rusbol needs shelter.
Preparing for winter
As already described above, the creators of the Rusbol variety attribute it to those that do not need shelter. However, if there is frost on the street, but there is no snow or there is very little of it, then there is a danger that a still immature plant, which has not managed to grow perennial wood in the required amount, will lose many eyes, which will take a lot of time to recover. That is why it is recommended to help young plants under three years of age to survive the cold by covering them.
Rusbol grapes: how to properly cover the vine
The time when it is time to cover the plants depends on the weather. It is important to know that you cannot cover the vine in advance, as the eyes spray. But it is also impossible to skip the beginning of cold weather in order to protect the root system and prevent it from suffering.
- After the autumn pruning has been carried out, you need to leave the plant for a period of time to prepare for the winter cold.Do not rush to cover the plant as soon as the first frosts appear, because hardening will be useful for the vine, so you should not take any measures up to -5 degrees.
- The root system of Rusbol is less resistant to winter cold, in contrast to the branches, so it is necessary to start insulating it from it. For this, humus mulch is suitable, which must be applied in a layer of 10 centimeters.
- The branches are carefully wrapped, making bundles of them, lowered to the ground, leaning against roofing material, wood or plastic.
- The soil and branches must be treated with a solution of copper sulfate in accordance with the instructions, this will help protect the plant from infections.
- The next step is to cover the plant with non-transitive material. Some use the ground, filling its bush, but from such a shelter there is a possibility that the eyes will suffer, which can vomit from dampness.
An excellent option as a shelter is mulching with spruce branches, a spandpod and a film draped over arcs and fixed in such a way that in case of a strong wind it will not be blown away. It is important to leave a small hole to ventilate the plant.
Conclusion
Rusbol is a grape that can be grown without much difficulty and bring good yields of tasty, juicy and aromatic berries, regardless of the selected variety of this type. And given that the cost of these berries on the market is quite high, you can also save a lot.
