Houseplants: ferns, palms, orchids, carnivorous and subtropical plants
Content:
It is no secret that the concept of "indoor plants" includes many groups, each of which, in turn, is further divided into groups that unite several species. This article will focus on unusual types of indoor plants that were considered exotic until recently (and some are still so). But today they are found more and more often among the usual geraniums and ficuses.
Houseplant species: palm trees
These gorgeous plants have settled in our apartments for so long that they are no longer considered exotic. They are quite unpretentious, but at the same time they are unusually beautiful. They are loved precisely for their decorative foliage (although some specimens bloom). Palm trees are hardy, their main requirement is high humidity. If you provide it, then your green pet will feel quite comfortable and, possibly, will grow up to the ceiling.
You can buy a tree from a flower shop or garden center. Or grow your own date palm from the seed. This process is not quick, but very fun. In addition to the date, popular representatives of this group are dracaena, yucca, washingtonia, likuala, cicas, zamia. In addition to the decorative function, palm trees are good because they actively produce oxygen. This means that they constantly improve the air quality in your home.
Ferns
In my opinion, ferns are underestimated by many growers. Yes, there is some inconvenience - spores ripen on the back of the leaves and spill out onto the floor. But otherwise it is one of the least problematic plants. The fern can exist anywhere in the apartment. He will equally like light, and partial shade and shadow.
He does not have any special requirements for the soil. Ferns love moisture. Feel very good if placed next to the aquarium. Their stunningly beautiful openwork leaves will withstand competition with any flowering plant. Ferns look good both separately and as part of a group of plants. The most common types: nephrolepis, maidenhair (or Venus hair), pellet, blehnum, pteris.
Carnivorous houseplants
This is really exotic. Predatory or carnivorous plants have appeared on the market relatively recently. Among indoor plants, they can still be found quite rarely. They always look unusual and intriguing. They got their atypical name for plants due to the fact that they literally feed on flesh. They trap and digest various insects, thus obtaining everything they need to grow. In nature, these plants usually live in areas with poor nutrient soil).
Some varieties of the Nepentes plant are capable of digesting even a medium-sized rat. True connoisseurs collect collections of such plants, among which you can find the Venus flytrap, sarracenia, sundew, heliamphora, zhiryanka, cephalotus. When caring for predatory plants, it is necessary to observe the watering regime, maintain high air humidity and not feed products from your table. Whatever they may need, they will catch themselves.
Orchids
This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful decorative flowering plants. When orchids first began to appear on sale, many admired them without risking buying. Since it was assumed that caring for this beautiful unusual flower would be too difficult. And then it turned out that the less you touch the orchid, the better it feels.
Place it in a place with diffused light and water as the roots dry. The orchid is one of the few plants that produce oxygen not only during the day but also at night. So it is recommended to place it in the bedroom. The most common types are Phalaenopsis orchid (this is the most popular type), Rinhostilis, Lelia, Oncidium and Epidendrum.
Subtropical indoor plant species
Subtropical representatives of indoor plants, or rather trees, will not surprise anyone either. Probably almost everyone tried to grow an orange or lemon from a seed. And many have succeeded. But not everyone managed to wait for the harvest of juicy fruits. But if you set such a goal, then it is quite possible.
Experienced growers grow at home from seeds and seeds purchased from the fruit store, not only citrus fruits, but also feijoa, pomegranates, kiwi, figs and bananas. Moreover, they do not just grow it, but carry out an artificial pollination procedure and get a crop. And in the apartment, a small tree with green foliage and bright orange tangerines or red pomegranates will undoubtedly be the main decoration of the interior.
All plants from the groups listed above are very beautiful, unusual and interesting, but not all are easy to care for. Therefore, when deciding to purchase a particular plant, study it. And then, with proper care, it will bring you a lot of joy and become the prima in your collection of indoor flowers.
