Anemone
Content:
In general, the name "anemone" comes from the Greek word anemone, which means "daughter of the winds", and indeed anemone is the second, more official name for anemone, which today is also quite often found in horticultural culture. This is due to the fact that even from the smallest gust of wind, the petals of the plant begin to flutter very strongly, and then they can even break off and fly around. This perennial belongs to the herbaceous family, is a typical representative of the Buttercup, although sometimes the anemone can be confused with other plants, despite its typical appearance and other typical characteristics. In nature, anemone can be found in regions where the climate is temperate and fairly stable, and in principle it can be found in any hemisphere of the earth. At the same time, the flower itself is unpretentious, it loves to grow in mountainous regions, as well as on the plains, where it also feels great. There are about 160 species of anemone, but there may be more, because not all of them have been fully studied. They bloom in completely different ways, at very different times, and they also look different. Many flower growers, even experienced ones, can sometimes get confused in the available species, although it becomes clear that, in principle, this plant in all its diversity has in this respect much more pluses than minuses.
Of course, in this article we will touch upon the questions about what features and characteristics the windmill has, what is the description of some of its varieties and types. We will also dwell in more detail on how the plant takes root in the plots, how to plant a plant and how to care for it so that it reveals its decorative features and characteristics as much as possible. Let's talk about the intricacies of watering and feeding, about diseases and pests that are especially dangerous for the plant. All this information will be very meaningful for both experienced gardeners and those who do not yet have experience, and they are in search of completely new plantings and crops for their site.
Anemone: landing and features

Today there are quite a large number of anemone species, not to mention the variety of varieties. At the same time, almost all of them do not differ in any particular whimsicality, but there are varieties and species that should still be provided with conditions and care so that the plants feel comfortable and give an excellent decorative result. The thing is that some species are tuberous, while others belong to rhizome species, and they may differ from each other in the intricacies of planting or care. So, for example, rhizome species of anemones are just different in that they are completely unpretentious and not capricious, it is very easy to care for them, and even a florist who has absolutely no experience can handle this. If we talk about tuberous anemones, then they can seriously suffer if they are left without attention and care, and if the care is incorrect, then there is also a great risk that the plant will die very quickly because of this, without even having time to bloom.
There are several subtleties and secrets that just reflect all the features of growing anemone on the site. They should be remembered, because if you take them into account or just know about them, then you can save the plant and improve its decorative features and characteristics:
- in very dry and hot weather, it is recommended to regularly water the plant so that it receives enough moisture and feels comfortable
- in the autumn period, it is best to feed with the help of mineral complex mixtures, and before planting the plant in open ground, in the process of its active growth and development, organic matter is introduced into the soil. Such comprehensive support will provide the plant with great strength, so that it can then be resistant to various temperature extremes and frosts. Also, thanks to this, immunity increases and, as a result, the plant is less susceptible to diseases or attacks from pests.
- in order to prevent the plant from freezing in winter, it is best to cover the anemone, using the most simple means - fallen leaves. You can also use thermal insulation materials, agrofibre, spruce branches, which also perfectly retain heat.
- When it comes to propagation, the easiest way to do this is with seed, and it is best to place the seed just before winter sets in. You can also propagate with root suckers, and this is recommended in the spring.
Of course, before planting the anemone, it is worth preparing the soil. The most suitable site is being looked for, the soil is prepared in accordance with some rather significant requirements, which in no case should be ignored, because the future state of the plant will largely depend on this. The site must be spacious, you can choose an area that is located in partial shade, but at the same time it must be protected from strong gusts of wind or from drafts. After all, we said earlier that if the plant is located in the wind, then there is a great risk that all the petals will simply crumble. The rhizome of a plant grows very strongly and extensively, but at the same time it is very fragile, and therefore damage may appear even from one touch, so you should be careful and very careful.
In addition, the anemone plant may not respond in the best way to direct sunlight or excessive heat, so it is worth keeping it cool, but not deep shade. The soil must be loose and light, nutritious and drained so that excess moisture leaves and does not stagnate in the root system. It is optimal to choose a site with a deciduous bud; peat bogs with loam are also suitable, but immediately it is worth providing the plant with equally favorable conditions, since this is really very important. In order for the soil to be ventilated and loose, the most ordinary sand should be added to it - either fine or medium. If the soil has high acidity, then this can be corrected with the help of some additives: for example, wood ash or dolomite flour is introduced into the soil, the gramme is calculated based on the size of the provided area (square meters, hundred parts).
If an anemone is sown with seeds, then it is worth remembering that they may have a low germination rate. Only one quarter of the seeds germinate, and the rest remain in the soil. At the same time, a prerequisite for the germination of seeds is that they must be freshly harvested, they must not lie too long to wait in the wings. Of course, seed germination can be increased; for this, gardeners use a method such as stratification. To do this, they are placed in a cold place for a period of four to eight weeks. The seeds can be placed either in peat or in coarse sand, while the mixture should be abundantly moistened, but its structure should not resemble a swamp. Further, the soil is sprayed every day with water, which can be thawed, rain or settled. After it will be seen that the seeds of the anemone are slightly swollen, it is necessary to combine them again with a small amount of soil substrate, all this is also thoroughly mixed and moistened with water.

The next step - the seeds of the anemone should be removed in a well-ventilated, but not cold room, where the temperature should be around five degrees. Approximately a few days after the first shoots appear, the container with seed material is transferred to the yard, where it is placed either in the snow or in the soil. The surface is sprinkled with straw or sawdust in order to maintain a comfortable temperature and so that the moisture does not evaporate too quickly. At the beginning of spring, the seeds are moved from containers to boxes so that they finally germinate and show which seeds were viable, and which, unfortunately, did not survive this procedure. Sometimes the gardener simply has no desire to spend so much time and effort and tinker with the seeds, and in this case there is a way out: anemones can simply be planted in separate containers in the fall, in which the loose, ventilated soil is located. Further, the boxes are buried right in the yard, from above they can be covered with branches or spruce branches. In winter, they themselves will undergo their natural stratification, some seeds will survive, some will remain right in the ground and will not give any result in germination. In the spring, the seeds can be removed from the ground, carefully planted in separate containers and monitor their further development. In principle, this way the gardener will save both his time and his energy, and according to the principle, this method does not differ in any way from all the others.
If the gardener deals with tubers, then before planting them in the ground, it is worth waking them up. To do this, for some time (for several hours), the tubers should be immersed in warm water so that they slightly swell. Further, the tubers are sent to separate pots, which are filled with a substrate, it must be slightly moistened so that the anemone feels as comfortable as possible in it. The tubers should be deepened by about five centimeters, no more. Before planting, the tubers can also be soaked a little more, for this they are wrapped with a damp cloth, which is also moistened not with ordinary water, but with an epin solution. Epin is not only a growth stimulant, but also a professional disinfectant that will be incredibly useful for the overall health of the plant. The prepared tubers are then planted directly into the open ground, where they grow further.
In general, if we talk about planting an anemone in open ground, then this is not at all difficult. But again, it is worthwhile to carefully consider the search for a growth point, because the general condition of the plant, its development and decorative characteristics will depend on this in the future. If the tubers have been pretreated and they have swollen enough, then the buds, or rather their tubercles, will become more distinguishable. Thanks to this, it will be possible to more accurately understand how to properly plant tubers in open ground. If the gardener still doubts what the growth point is, then it should be taken into account that the upper part of the tuber is always quite flat, so the sharp end of the tuber always looks down, and when planting it is from the bottom. If the tuber has an atypical and not quite standard shape, then it can be planted with the side, then the gardener will definitely not lose.
The hole should be about 15 centimeters deep, and its diameter can vary from thirty to forty centimeters. The gardener pours some wood ash and humus into the hole in advance so that the soil is more balanced and not too acidic. Then the tuber itself is placed in the soil, and it should be installed correctly. Next, the hole is covered with soil, it is lightly tamped with your hands so that air pockets do not form. After planting in the ground, the tubers should be watered very abundantly, since, in principle, the plant is excellent for moisture. This is done using rain or melted, filtered boiled water, which should be at room temperature. You can also just take the settled water.
Anemone seedlings should be planted quite mature, about two real leaf plates should have time to form on them, no less. Seedlings are planted in open ground in the slightest shade, usually in the second year of their development. If planting is carried out in the autumn, then the surface of the site should be covered with spruce branches, agrofibre or foliage. The most ordinary branches are also suitable for shelter. The first flowering of anemones, which the gardener grows from seed material, will come only three years after the start of planting procedures. When tubers or seeds are planted in a substrate, it should be borne in mind that you can achieve excellent results in the growth and flowering of a plant - flowering can sometimes last from early April to November, the main thing is to follow the rules of planting and agricultural technology. To do this, you can also purchase a variety of anemones, and they are planted at different times - at the time recommended by more experienced gardeners. Then one flower will bloom earlier, other varieties will bloom after it, then later ones will be connected, which will create the appearance of a continuous flowering of the plant. Of course, such results can only be achieved if the gardener himself organizes excellent care for the anemone. We will talk about care subtleties and features in the next part of this article.
Anemone: plant care

In general, caring for an anemone is not difficult at all. It is important to provide the necessary amount of moisture through watering, and to carry out moisture throughout the entire growing season of the plant. If the soil is moistened too much, then there is a great risk that the root system will be infected with a wide variety of rot, which will subsequently become the main reason why the shrub will simply die. If there is too little moisture, then the buds will not have enough resources for full-fledged formation, which, of course, will have the most negative effect on the flowering of the plant and, accordingly, on its decorative features, for which the anemone is so valued. Optimum moisture can be achieved; for this, the flower is planted on a hillock or hill, and good drainage must be installed on the site. The surface where the anemone is planted should also be slightly mulched, since one of the features of the mulch is precisely to prevent too rapid evaporation of moisture from the soil. Peat or sawdust, humus or compost can be used as mulch. Straw, leaves of fruit trees. The thickness of the layer of mulch should be about five centimeters, no more, when feeding the mulch, it can be embedded directly into the soil, this will not affect its condition in any way, unless it feeds it again. In the spring, watering should be organized about once a week, but in the summer, it is worth focusing on climatic conditions. For example, if the summer turned out to be rainy, then the anemones can not be watered at all, but there are species that need moisture, and among them is the crown anemone, since it blooms in the summer, and therefore it is worth adding additional moisture. If the summer is very dry and hot, then watering should be carried out in the morning and in the evening so that the plant does not fall into direct sunlight during watering. Such procedures will be quite enough, and the plantings will be very grateful - this can be seen by their vigorous appearance and by how brightly and amicably they bloom.
When the anemone plant is at the flowering stage, it is imperative to provide it with feeding. Basically, it is worth adding organic matter, but at the same time we exclude fresh manure, since it does not quite fit in composition, all the rest of the organic matter can be alternated with each other, the anemone reacts perfectly to it.In autumn, anemones need more complex mineral fertilizers and mixtures. It is also worth noting that if during planting the gardener introduced all the necessary fertilizers and substances into the soil, then, in principle, the anemone can no longer be fed additionally, since these substances and components will be quite enough for planting. The soil is periodically loosened, the overgrown weeds are removed. A chopper should not be used as there is a chance that the grower will injure the fragile root system. So it's best to do these things manually, and they usually don't take too long if done regularly.
Anemone, unlike many other ornamental plantings, differs in that it is very resistant to diseases or infections. On the bushes, you can sometimes see settlements of snails or slugs, which are removed by hand. The plant is treated with metaldehyde for protection and prevention, but the drug should be diluted in accordance with the instructions, otherwise there is a great risk that it will simply injure the plant. Sometimes leaf nematodes or caterpillars also settle on the bushes, if suddenly this happened, then it is best to dig up and dispose of the bush, since there is no remedy for nematodes. The soil in which the infected shrubs grew must also be replaced, and after a while after disinfection and related procedures, other plants can be planted in it.
Anemone can be propagated in different ways - this is the division of the root part, and the seed method, as well as reproduction by tubers or by dividing the shrub. We have already talked about how to reproduce by seeds or tubers a little higher. In order to divide the rhizome of the anemones, it is necessary to dig out the bushes from the soil in the spring, divide them very carefully into several parts. Each piece should be about five centimeters long. Each part must also have at least one bud so that new branches and shoots can grow from. Further, the delenki are planted in a loose substrate, they are placed horizontally, they can be buried quite a bit, only five centimeters, no deeper. But this division will fully mature only in about three years. If the plant has reached the age of four to five years, then it can also be propagated by dividing the bush. The main thing is that the plant is not younger, and, of course, it is best to focus on the individual characteristics of the plant.
If the Anemone grows in mid-latitudes, then after it has completely faded, it is recommended to dig it up and prepare it for the winter period. The tubers are slightly dried, after which the ground part is completely removed from them, then they are dropped into a peat or sandy composition, and then placed in a place as cool as possible. The room should also be dark, it can be a dry cellar, basement, where there is no moisture. If it is assumed that there will not be too strong frosts during the winter period, then the flowers can be left directly in the soil, in the very place where they usually grow. For this, nevertheless, the surface of the site is prepared in advance. It is sprinkled with rather abundantly flown garden leaves, and you can also cover the soil with spruce branches so that the plant is protected from frost and low temperatures.
Anemone species
Of course, both in nature and in culture, a sufficient number of species and varieties of anemone grows. In this part of the article, we will present some of them that are especially popular and in demand among flower growers. All species can be divided according to the flowering time either into spring or summer-autumn ones. Spring species look especially sophisticated and elegant, while they are distinguished by the fact that they have a wide variety of very different shades and flower colors. They can also be painted in pastel colors - blue or cream, pink or lilac. In addition to smooth flowers, there are also terry flowers, they look even more attractive and tempting, and they are also worth paying attention to, since undoubtedly they will be a great addition to any decorative landscape planting.
Spring species of anemone differ in that they have a fairly short flowering cycle. They wake up in April, and more abundant and harmonious flowering occurs already in May. At the same time, in July, the plant enters a dormant stage, foliage can be preserved, but flowering can not be expected. Also, when the plant is at rest, it is better not to disturb it once again - watering is reduced, feeding stops altogether. Much depends, of course, on the characteristics of the variety. Also, anemones can vary depending on the rhizome, delicate anemones have slow-growing tuberous rhizomes, but if we are talking about oak or buttercup anemones, then they have articulated rhizomes. One way or another, there is only one similarity between them - the root system of any anemones is incredibly fragile, and it should be handled very carefully, otherwise there is a great risk of causing damage to the plant, and if the root system is damaged, the plant can die in just a matter of days.
- Tender anemone - the plant is very miniature, its height is about 5-10 centimeters, no more. At the same time, it looks extremely pleasant and attractive in low-growing anemone plantings. The most popular varieties are blue shades, charmer (pink flowers) and white splendor (snow white flowers). Of course, the flowering is still abundant, even despite such a miniature and even in some way dwarf shrubs.

- Dubravnaya anemone - in general, this species is less popular, especially when it comes to flower growers who operate in mid-latitudes. The bush can be from twenty to thirty centimeters high, the flowers are very simple, their diameter is about four centimeters. They are usually painted in a snow-white shade, but there are varieties where flowers can be painted in pink or lilac, as well as blue shades. There are several terry varieties in this form, they just look very aesthetically pleasing and decorative. The peculiarity of this species is that it is completely unpretentious, so that to obtain a good result and abundant flowering, usually no global effort is required from the grower, and agricultural technology is reduced to simple measures - watering, feeding, weeding, protecting the plant in winter ...

- Buttercup anemone - the variety is also unpretentious, there are both smooth inflorescences and attractive double flowers. The height of the bush is from 20 to 25 centimeters, the flowers have a bright and very rich golden yellow color. Moreover, they are slightly smaller in size than the flowers that form in the oak anemone. It is possible to grow this type of anemones in almost any soil in terms of composition, it is not at all fastidious, it can even withstand content in poor or depleted soils.

It is also worth talking about autumn (summer-autumn) anemones. They include the following species in their composition: Japanese anemone, hybrid anemone, crown anemone. Usually this species is represented by very large and perennial shrubs, which at the same time have a well-developed and very branched root system. Flowering begins in the very last weeks of summer and continues until mid-autumn. The flowering of the crown anemone can even be observed twice a season - in the first summer weeks, and then in the autumn. Autumn species are more slender, have very powerful peduncles, they can be from 80 centimeters to one meter in height. On the peduncles there is a fairly large number of semi-double or simple flowers that can be painted in different shades, it all depends solely on the type of plant. Not one, but two varieties of crown anemones are popular at once:
- anemone de caen
- anemone Mr. Fokker.
De Caen Is a variety that produces fairly simple flowers that can be painted in different shades. Mr Fokker - This is a powerful plant that gives a blue color of the inflorescences. Both varieties look incredibly powerful and very decorative, due to which they are quite popular. The terry type includes varieties such as lord jim (blue flowers), Don Juan (flowers of a very rich red hue, they look incredibly attractive). The hybrid anemone includes popular varieties such as oneorine jubert - snow-white inflorescences, which can be painted from below in a light pinkish haze; professional - semi-double flowers, painted in a dark purple hue; queen charlotte - semi-double flowers that have a rich pink color. Thus, any florist can choose exactly the type and variety that he likes best, and such a choice assumes that anemones can fit into absolutely any plantings, flower beds, rockeries and landscapes. These anemones will look majestic and dignified everywhere, and small anemones will look cute and vulnerable, although it cannot be said that these plants are too weak or whimsical.
