Waldsteinia - sterile strawberries: types, cultivation and care
Content:
Waldsteinia is a herbaceous plant, perennial. In a winter with little snow, it can freeze out, therefore, in such cases, a simple shelter or additional application of snow cover is necessary. And in the spring, you can wait again for a green decoration. It tolerates frosts up to 30 degrees. The downside of a herb for open ground Waldsteinia can be considered its rapid spread throughout the territory both by the root system and by the mustache like a garden strawberry. Therefore, if such a feature interferes, it is necessary to build small fences to a depth of 15-25 cm.
The bushes of the plant are similar to strawberries, but differ in the color of the petals, the flowers of Waldsteinia are yellow, there are no fruits on the plant itself. The culture is used as decoration on the site. Adapted to any living conditions, completely unpretentious in terms of care requirements. This plant can be used to decorate curbs along paths, stone stairs, rock gardens. It is beautiful in combination with lungwort, hosta, etc. Fruits are available, but in no case should they be eaten, they are inedible.
Waldsteinia: planting and care
The Waldsteinia plant does not require much care - the plant reproduces by self-sowing, independently, it is resistant to diseases and pests consider it tasteless, therefore they do not pay special attention to the culture. The only action in the care is weeding and periodic removal of seeds and whiskers, so that a strong thickening does not turn out. In a very severe drought, a slight moisture of the site will be required.
When buying seeds, pay attention to the instructions, which indicate the sequence and conditions for planting the crop. Initially following all the points, you don't have to think about further care. Only natural conditions will help. No need for chemical treatments, fertilizing, etc.
Types of Waldsteinia
The most famous among decorators on the site are three varieties.
Waldsteinia Gravity-leaved waldsteinia geoides - yellow gold color, perennial, very common. Bushes no higher than 30 cm, the root system is not deep, creeping in moderation. The leaves are heart-shaped, with pronounced veins. The color of the leaves over time takes on a color from bright green to dark. This species blooms in May, quite abundant, up to 9 flowers per bush, with an inflorescence of 2-3 cm in diameter.
Wild strawberry (waldsteinia fragarioides) - similar to garden strawberry bushes. Covers a selected area of soil, bushes reach 20 cm in height, flowering occurs for a longer period, beginning of May, end of June. This fact allows you to enjoy beauty longer than the previous view.
Waldsteinia ternata (waldsteinia ternata) - forms a denser covering of the allotted area, pleases with flowering in May, but the bright green carpet will continue to attract the attention of not only the owner, but also the guests. this species can be painted with inserts from perennials, which do not exceed the growth of the given variety of barren strawberries, but pleases with flowering until late autumn. This species is simply ramified, and is winter-hardy.
