June grape care
Content:
To get a good harvest and prevent diseases of the grapes, it is necessary to take care of them all year round, with the exception of the winter months, when they are reliably protected by shelter. But even at this time, it is advisable to control the amount of snow cover on the shelter and make sure that it does not fall below 50 cm. monitor populations of harmful insects. June in this regard is one of the most important months, since during this period the vine grows most actively, blooms and forms berries. So let's take a closer look at what should be the care of the grapes, what kind of work should be done in June, so that the vine grows and develops correctly and gives a good harvest.
Summer grape care. Pruning shoots
If you are growing grapes not out of curiosity, but purposefully to get a harvest, then you need to remove all unnecessary shoots in a timely manner. This is done so that the plant does not waste energy in vain, and all the nutrients arrive as intended - where the ovaries are formed.
Cut off all weak shoots, shoots that have appeared in the wrong place. Don't be afraid to harm the plant. Pruning in summer will be beneficial and will only accelerate its growth. And the places of the cuts are more likely to be tightened under the influence of sunlight.
The main thing to remember is that the pruning shears you use must be very sharp and must be disinfected before use.
In order to get a full-fledged harvest, you need to make sure that one bunch remains on each branch. This is especially true for varieties with large berries and a heavy bunch, such as “Victoria», «Aleshenkin"," Phenomenon "and others.
Since some varieties form 3-4 clusters (during the ripening period they will simply not be able to hold such a weight), it is necessary to carefully cut off the inflorescences before flowering. If you wait for the moment when the berries are formed, then you can lose the entire harvest.
Leave only strong and powerful shoots when pruning. Only they can give a good harvest. Those branches on which inflorescences do not appear (sterile) should be cut off, leaving a small area for nutrients to be stored there.
Graft
Also June is the time for green grafting. That is, when a green stalk is grafted onto a green shoot. The shafts should be prepared by sharpening them and inserting them into a special incision on the plant (rootstock).
You can act according to the following scheme:
- Prepare the cuttings in the fall. Sharpen about 2.5 cm on both sides.
- Put them in water until the buds swell.
- Graft the vine so that the eyes of the main plant and the cutting are pointing in different directions.
- Secure the graft area with suitable material, then wrap with plastic wrap.
Grape care in June. Fertilizers
As we already know, in June the vine actively grows and forms ovaries, so it needs quite a lot of nutrients. But complex root dressing should be carried out a couple of weeks before flowering (standard set: nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus), and then fertilizers will not be needed during the flowering period.
It is imperative to carry out foliar dressing by spraying the foliage. This will increase the plant's immunity. Will have a positive effect on productivity.Improves pollination and accelerates the formation of bunches.
For foliar feeding, you can use such products as "Humisol", "Boric acid", "Potassium humate", "Potassium chloride", "Zinc sulfate".
The third June feeding should be carried out at the end of flowering in the process of ovary formation. To do this, it is necessary to dilute potassium-phosphorus fertilizers in 15 liters of water, about 45 grams.
And for foliar spraying, you will have to prepare a rather complex, but at the same time very effective cocktail.
For a ten-liter bucket of water, you will need half a teaspoon of ordinary iodine, half a tablespoon of boric acid, about 60-70 grams of soda, a tablespoon of potassium humate, several crystals of potassium permanganate, 20 grams of Kemira Lux and a teaspoon of Novosil.
And to prevent the appearance of various diseases and harmful insects, you can use the drugs Tiovit Jet and Ridomil Gold.
In addition to complex mineral dressings, you can use good old organic matter and feed the grapes with bird droppings or manure.
Such fertilizers can be applied only after they have been overfilled (manure). Or soak them in water for a couple of weeks, and after the solution has fermented, dilute it and use it for root watering.
You can also plant green manures between rows, which enrich the soil with nitrogen (white mustard, legumes). At the time of flowering, these plants must be chopped up and dug up with soil.
Diseases
If you did not have time to carry out the preventive treatment of grapes from diseases in the spring, then there is a chance to do it in June. Well, if spots or a gray bloom began to appear on the foliage, then the treatment should be carried out as soon as possible.
Most often, you have to deal with a spider mite and two extremely unpleasant diseases: mildew and powdery mildew.
In the first case, the drug "Fufanon" will help you, and for diseases, "Rodomil Gold" and "Topaz". But if the ovaries have already formed, then these shoots should be sprayed with safer means, using potassium permanganate or ordinary baking soda to prepare the solution.
Grape care: removing stepchildren
If you are familiar with growing tomatoes, then you immediately understand what it is about. Stepsons are shoots that emerge from the axils of the main leaves. Experts cannot agree on whether they should always be removed or kept. Each case is individual and it all depends on the condition of the bush.
If you see that there are too many shoots and foliage, then definitely remove the stepsons, since excessive thickening will only lead to the likelihood of disease and weakening of the plant. But if there are few shoots in the current season, then the stepsons, on the contrary, can help in the process of photosynthesis and have a beneficial effect on the ripening of the crop.
Garter
It is necessary to tie the plant up, as this will facilitate the access of sunlight and fresh air to all parts of the plant. In the future, the grapes will independently climb the support using tendrils. When tying, do not tighten the material too much so that the vine does not rub against the support.
Grape. Planting and care in summer
Although it is usually practiced to plant grapes in the spring or fall, you can plant them in June. To do this, it is necessary to prepare pits about 30 cm deep in advance (several days in advance) and water them with warm water so that the soil settles and warms up.
At the same time, the seedlings must be accustomed to the street, leaving them for 5-7 days under the trees so that they are in the shade. And then for another 8-9 days in a sunny place, so that they adapt to the rays of the sun.
After that, you can plant, tie the plant to a pre-installed peg and water it well. During the first season, one escape will be enough, so all stepchildren should be removed immediately.
To summarize, we can say that June is indeed one of the most stressful months in gardening. But if you do everything right, then in 2-2.5 months it will pay off with an excellent harvest.
