In this article, we will dwell in more detail on the description of the thuja of the Mickey variety, indicate its most striking main characteristics, and also note what are the features leaving behind the thuja of this variety. All the information will allow the gardener to better understand what plant he is dealing with, and how best to care for him in order to get a really developed and very decorative tree that will decorate any site.
Description of the thuja Mickey variety and its main characteristics
In other words, thuja is also called a life tree, since it is an evergreen bush that can withstand rather harsh climatic conditions. It is a coniferous plant that can grow as an attractive ornamental bush or tree. Gardeners are very passionate about planting and breeding thujas, not only because they are distinguished by their external beauty and attractiveness, but also because they are completely not capricious and unpretentious in care, they can grow in partial shade or withstand severe drought.
Thuja called Mickey's homeland is North America, as well as Canada, where it took root well and gave incredibly attractive ornamental shrubs. It was these properties that allowed the thuja to further spread far beyond their own habitat, to become part of the plantings that are located in the Old World. It was from this place that the spread of western thuja Mickey began throughout the continent. It wasn't long before the thuja began to actively grow in Russia.
Despite the difference in names, they are all representatives of the same variety and, accordingly, they have similar characteristics. In Russia, this variety of thuja began to grow initially exclusively on the Black Sea coast, that is, closer to the warm southern regions. But then the bush was able to adapt to the fact that it began to be exported and planted in more northern regions. Over time, he began to give the same excellent results not only in terms of his adaptation and subsequent growth, but also in terms of his external characteristics and characteristics.
Thuja has an evergreen cone-shaped crown that has a very wide base. The top is very sharp, if the bush is periodically formed, then an excellent ornamental plant is obtained, which can become an ornament of many areas. Young seedlings are distinguished by the fact that their leaves have sharp needles, like needles. But when the plant gets a little older, the leaves become more like scales, which are painted in a bright juicy green hue. The shoots are strict, vertical, look very neat and aristocratic, especially against the background of many other plantings for decorating a personal plot, parks, territories, therefore, Thuja Mickey is used very often for landscape design. In addition to the fact that thuja is distinguished by its incredible external attractiveness, it has several more features and advantages,to be listed.
TO merits thuja varieties Mickey include the following:
- the bush is able to tolerate being in the shade, but not for too long
- does not impose any requirements on the quality of the soil in which the bush grows
- the plant can take root in not the most ecologically favorable territories, it is not afraid of smoke or excessive gas pollution. The bush emits substances that are able to purify the air around, and this is its great advantage from an environmental point of view. In general, it should be said that many other varieties and types of thuja have such properties.
- the variety has high resistance to sharp frosts
- if suddenly prolonged precipitation or excessive drought occurs, then the bush is also able to tolerate these climatic features, they do not harm it at all, but on the contrary temper it. But nevertheless, everything possible should be done so that this condition is not too long, otherwise it may negatively affect the decorative characteristics of the shrub.
- pruning is a procedure that is welcomed by a bush of this variety, it responds well to both formative and sanitary pruning
- The Mickey bush can be grown equally well in the open field and in a confined space - a pot or container.
With proper care, its properties will not suffer in any way, and this is a big plus.
Thuja grows very slowly, on average it adds about seven to eight centimeters per year. At the same time, the bush belongs to the dwarf group - The maximum height of Mickey's thuja does not exceed one meter. The variety does not need any individual approach to care, but you still need to know about some of the intricacies of planting and leaving this bush, and, observing all the conditions and rules, you can achieve an excellent result.
Planting and leaving
The planting site is selected based on the needs of the plant. It loves sunlight very much, or it can perfectly take root in partial shade. In general, if we talk about the requirements for the composition and condition of the soil, then there are practically none. But, as a rule, in order for the plant to adapt faster and demonstrate all its decorative features, it is best to plant the Tuya Mickey variety in loamy soils, where there is no groundwater, or moisture simply will not accumulate unnecessarily in the soil. If thuja is planted in the ground, which had previously been growing in a pot or containers for a long time, then it must be thoroughly moistened, then it will be more adapted to such conditions.
The soil that is dug in a place where a hole is dug must be mixed with peat and sand in equal proportions. A certain amount of purchased mineral fertilizer is also added there, since without it the thuja will experience some lack of energy and necessary substances. Part of the mixture should also be added to the drainage, which is also placed on the bottom of the dug hole. After planting, the trunk circle must be mulched, peat, sawdust, compost are used for this. Thanks to them, moisture will evaporate less, which will have an excellent effect on the general condition of the plant. In order to propagate a plant, you can use several methods:
Seeds - this method is less preferred among gardeners, since it will take a very long time to grow thuja from seeds. The process can take several years, so few gardeners decide on this. It is preferable to propagate thuja cuttings... This option is the most popular and, of course, the most optimal if we are talking about such a unique plant as thuja. Usually, the cuttings begin to propagate the bush in the summer, when the growth of the shoots slows down noticeably. Thanks to this, when transplanting a bush, it will be much easier to adapt to new conditions, as well as to survive this kind of stress.
First, the grower takes a two or three year old stalk from the end of the plant's shoot about 10 to 15 centimeters long. It should be torn off along with the so-called "heel", as this will allow the plant to root much faster and more efficiently. Cuttings must be cleaned of needles, which will become superfluous and may interfere. Then the cuttings must be soaked in a growth stimulator, since this process is one of the central ones. The stalk is soaked for about 12 hours, this will be enough for the agent to penetrate the plant system and give it the most effective growth in the future.
Also, the stalk after these manipulations can be transplanted into a pre-prepared container. It should be filled with soil, which the gardener mixes on his own. To do this, he takes a certain amount of light soil and mixes it in equal proportions with river sand. Cuttings should not be installed in the soil directly, but at an angle of no more than 45 degrees. Deepening of the cutting is carried out by about two centimeters, no more. The soil is then compacted and watered with warm, settled water. You can also cover the stem with plastic on top to create a greenhouse effect for it.
Further, thuja needs the most standard watering... It includes procedures such as watering, getting rid of excess weeds, carrying out planned fertilizing according to the schedule, as well as pruning some branches for sanitary and formative purposes.
In the first year, when the plant is still very small, it is not yet able to independently absorb moisture and necessary nutrients. It is for this reason that the plant needs to be constantly watered and monitored for the level of soil moisture. As a rule, then the plant begins to settle down a little, and experienced gardeners recommend watering the thuja no more than once a week.
In order for moisture to evaporate more slowly, you can mulch the trunk circle, using all available substances for this. In this case, it will be possible to water the bush a little less often, as only the top layer of the soil dries out. This also needs to be monitored by the gardener himself. If the plant suddenly lacks moisture, this can lead to the fact that the needles will lose their bright and juicy green color, it will become more brown, dry, completely non-decorative.
Fertilizers are usually applied in early April or mid-May. You can use nitroammophoska, which has a great effect on the adaptation of the plant, the growth and development of its root system, as well as on the external characteristics of the thuja itself. In October, fertilizers must be applied, which contain a large amount of potassium. If the thuja does not have enough magnesium, this can lead to the plant losing its decorative properties - the needles will become brown, dry, crumble, and the bush itself will cease to be so bright and lush.
Later in the fall, the plant must be watered very abundantly with warm, settled water - this way the gardener will replenish all the moisture reserves by the winter period, and it will be easier for him to survive the winter. The variety belongs to a frost-resistant plant species. But, one way or another, abundant snow cover does not always have a positive effect on the condition of the crown, therefore it must be tied up, and it is also necessary, in principle, to cover the bush. To do this, you can use the purchased agrofibre, you can also use spruce branches for shelter. The shelter can be removed from the thuja when the soil begins to thaw, and when it begins to gradually warm up in the spring.
Pruning - this is a necessary manipulation that is performed by the gardener. After pruning is done, the thuja, on the contrary, becomes thicker and more lush, and pruning can be done in any season - thuja will only be for the good. You can limit yourself to only formative pruning, but sanitary pruning is done when dry or damaged branches appear on the thuja.Formation can be done from the very first year after planting Tui Mickey, then it will be much easier for her to maintain the shape that the gardener himself sets for her, and this is incredibly convenient. There are opinions of experienced gardeners that, in principle, there is no need to prune thuja, how the crown is formed independently, depending on which variety and what species the plant belongs to. But still, the gardener must periodically intervene in this process, since it is the gardener who can maintain the aesthetics of the bush, and then he will decorate the site even more.
Diseases in thuja do not occur often, but if they are found, then this usually happens precisely because the gardener did not follow agrotechnical rules or improperly looked after the plant from the very beginning. The most dangerous is late blight, since it is very difficult to deal with it, and it quickly infects the entire plant - both its upper green part and the root system. In order to fight late blight, it is necessary to cut and burn damaged branches so that the fungi do not transfer to branches that are still healthy. Also, the plant should be thoroughly disinfected. Thuja can also undergo brown shoots and rust, shute and fusarium.
If Tuya Mickey suddenly becomes infected, it is necessary to immediately treat him with insecticides. It is also worth carefully examining the plant, treating the green part with karbofos. The soil around the plant can be treated with identical products, so the care will be complex. Thus, with careful care, as well as observing all the rules, the plant can reach its maximum growth, and also, in principle, it can become a real decoration on absolutely any personal plot, on any site, in any landscape design idea. Tui can also grow simply at home, in containers. It will be enough to water and expose them to the light, since it is thanks to the heat and the sun that the plant retains its lush crown and decorative features.
