Very often, when decorating plots, designers use various conifers or shrubs, as they add coziness and elegance to the territory. Various varieties of thuja are no exception.
At the moment, there are a huge number of thuja varieties that are radically different from each other in height, width, color and shape.
Where was this variety created
The Kornik variety was bred in Poland, breeders obtained this variety as a result of their work, it belongs to the representatives of the western variety, as well as to the Cypress family.
Folded Thuja Kornik: variety description
Tuya Kornik: description, general information about the variety
Kornik turned out as a result of crossing wild-growing folded thuja, therefore, it has a decorative habit and high frost resistance. Kornik is a perennial plant, its peculiarity is that it can withstand a drop to -45 degrees, and in the spring it copes with -20 degrees. This feature allows you to grow thuja in all areas, with absolutely any climate. Also, a small positive feature of the variety is that it grows very slowly, so formation and pruning is very rare.
The Kornik variety is considered an adult when he turns 15-20 years old, by which time the height of the thuja reaches 280-320 centimeters. Thuja is a perennial plant, so this variety can germinate on a site for 200-300 years, with proper care and attention. The thuja has a fairly common conical crown shape, the crown itself is dense and has no gaps. Such a thuja can grow both in a sunny area and in a shaded area, it tolerates winds and drafts well. The composition of the soil also does not really bother her, the main thing is not to have swampy soil. Kornik also has increased drought resistance.
Tuya Kornik: photo, appearance characteristics
- The variety has very small branches, but at the same time they are quite strong and thick. They are close to each other and form an angle of 50 degrees with the trunk.
- The upper branches are fairly flat, are arranged vertically and the branches are separated. If you look at the crown from afar, you will notice that it seems to be located in waves, that is, the shoots are so even that they form smooth transitions.
- The trunk of the thuja expands towards the bottom, usually has a grayish tint, and brown is the main color. Small irregularities and roughness are sometimes found on the bark.
- The needles of Kornik are scaly and dense, they adhere tightly to each other and to the branch. The needles have a rich color, usually similar to the color of an emerald. When the color is sunny, the bright green shimmers with a golden tint.
- Thuja's cones are large enough, they can reach up to 15 centimeters in length. They are formed every year, but in small numbers. Kornik's cone is round in shape and consists of small scales. A young plant has light green or green cones, but at the time of the fifteenth birthday it becomes beige or light brown in color.
- Thuja has seeds that are suitable for planting, they are very small, grayish in color and have transparent light wings.
- The roots of Kornik intertwine and go deep into the ground. They can go into the soil by 2-2.5 meters.
- Since the bark does not have resin passages, because it is folded, the tree has a very rich smell of needles.
Note: When the hot season comes, it is not necessary to protect the thuja from the sun's rays, as they do not cause burns on the tree. Thuja perfectly tolerates the sun, does not even turn yellow.
Western thuja Kornik in landscape design
Since this variety has an unusual arrangement of upper branches and an unusual beautiful color, it is often used in landscape design. Kornik can grow anywhere, so it can be placed throughout the site. Due to its slow growth, it retains its shape for a long time.
Thuja of this variety can be used with other plants, flowers, trees. Kornik is combined with dwarf conifers and ornamental shrubs. Thuja can be planted in a single variation and in massive variations, in any case it will look spectacular and harmonious. It can often be found in parks, gardens, sanatoriums. It looks great next to hotels or cultural buildings.
The most common registrations are as follows:
- Growing thuja as a background near a building or house.
- Single landing in the center, thuja will attract attention, since it is quite large-scale.
- Combination with bright flowers or shrubs.
- Planting thujas so that they form a hedge.
- Planting thuja around the perimeter, obscuring the site.
- Combining thuja with juniper or other conifers.
How to propagate thuja
Thuja propagation occurs in several ways. It can be propagated using seeds or cuttings.
When using seeds, one must take into account that the process can take a long time. It takes about 36-40 months before transplanting seedlings into open ground. Before such a planting, it is worth knowing that the seeds of Kornik have a low germination capacity, therefore they may not sprout at all. About 40% of the seeds sprout, and the rest simply cannot give them. To collect the seeds, you need to wait until the cones are ripe. This will happen in the second half of October. It is during this period that the seeds must be collected from the cones and left until the onset of spring. In the second half of May, the seeds must be sown in separate containers, already at the end of the autumn period sprouts will appear. The next year, the sprouts should be planted and left for the winter and planted in open ground in the spring.
Cutting is considered to be the simpler and faster way, the more the result will be much better than using seeds. Cuttings are harvested at the beginning of summer, a shoot is cut off from an adult tree, about 25 centimeters long. The cut on the handle must be treated with manganese and planted in soil, which must be saturated with nutrients. By the beginning of spring, roots will appear on the cutting, and it can be planted in a permanent place in open ground.
You can reproduce using layering. For such reproduction, you will need an shoot, which should be in the lower part of the thuja. This shoot is buried at a depth of 8-10 centimeters and watered well. It must be watered every day with a small amount of water for days. Over time, the plant will take root and can be transplanted to another place where it will function as a separate organism.
Tuya Kornik: how to choose the right seedling
If you decide to purchase thuja in a specialized store or nursery, you need to pay attention to the fact that the plant is strong and free from diseases. A seedling that is more than three years old is suitable for planting; there should also be no wounds or damage. The root system must be large and well developed.
When buying seedlings in a nursery, processing before planting is not needed, since it has already been carried out in the nursery. But, and if you harvested the seedlings yourself, then before planting you need to treat the root system with a manganese solution, leaving it for 3 hours, and then treat it with Kornevin.
Landing rules
When to plant thuja
If you look at the description of the variety, then you can replace that the variety has a very high resistance to frost and severe frosts, but it is worth considering that only an adult plant is endowed with such a quality. Young thuja tolerates frosts rather hard, so it should not be planted in the cold season, otherwise it may not take root and die.
Planting is best done in May when the soil is well warmed up. Planting in autumn can only be carried out in areas with a warm climate, where there is no severe frost. For example, in the south in autumn it is usually warm and the soil is warm. In this case, such a landing is possible.
Place selection
Western thuja Kornik loves warmth and sun, but at the same time it is a shade-tolerant plant, therefore it can plant both in well-lit places and in shaded places. The location will depend on your design decision. The soil at the planting site should not be acidic. Neutral and slightly alkaline soil is perfect for planting.
Note: If the soil is acidic and saline, then the tree will not develop, but simply will simply die.
Super sandy soils that are light and good at carrying oxygen into the soil will also work well for the plant. In no case should you plant thuja in a swampy area where there is an excess of moisture, and there should be no groundwater near the place.
Before planting, it must carry out drainage, and if the acidity of the soil is increased, then it is necessary to carry out work that will reduce it. For example, you can add alkali to the soil, thanks to it, the acidity will decrease and normalize. Also, for good growth and development, it is necessary to feed the soil with sand, organic matter, earth and superphosphate.
Planting instructions
- First you need to dig a hole in which the plant will be planted. It should be medium in size, about 80 centimeters deep and about 70 centimeters in diameter.
- A drainage system must be installed at the bottom of the pit; it can consist of broken brick, large pebbles, gravel or expanded clay. The layer must be at least 25 centimeters.
- In 2-3 hours, you need to shed a hole well. To do this, it is filled with water to the brim, it is necessary so that water can penetrate into the deep layers of the soil.
- The soil mixed with fertilizer should be divided into two parts. And put one half on top of the drainage system.
- A small mound should turn out from the ground and it is in it that the plant is placed.
- Then the second part of the earth is covered with the root system and the soil is well compacted.
- Then add ordinary soil until the root system is completely buried.
- The soil is compacted again and watered well.
- Mulching should be done after watering. For this, you can use earth hay or other material. It will allow the moisture in the soil to remain warm.
Note: The neck of the root should protrude 3 centimeters from the ground. And also with a mass planting, it is necessary to observe the distance between crops, it should be about 90 centimeters.
Tuya Kornik: description of care
Watering
The Kornik variety does not require special care, but basic work should be carried out, as this greatly affects the well-being of the plant and its appearance.
It is necessary to water the plant depending on the state of the soil and on the age of the plant. If the plant is young, that is, it is less than 6 years old, then watering will be frequent, about 2 times every 7 days. At the same time, watering is highly dependent on weather conditions. In drought conditions, it should be more abundant than in normal or rainy weather. An adult plant needs less watering, about 2 times in 15 days will be enough for it. So that moisture does not evaporate, but remains in the soil, mulching is carried out using sawdust, peat or chips. After watering or rain, the soil should be loosened so that oxygen enters the soil and saturates the root system of the tree.
Fertilizer
Fertilization will only begin in the fifth year, after planting.Due to the slow growth of the plant, the fertilizing that was applied will take 3-4 years before planting, after which it will end, and the plant will need new fertilizer. If feeding will be carried out in the spring, then potash fertilizers should be applied or you can use special feeding for the Cypress family. For summer feeding, organic fertilizers are used. Every year it will be necessary to apply fertilizer 1-2 times.
Crown formation
Since the folded western thuja Kornik grows slowly, it is worth pruning it at will. Only sanitary pruning is obligatory, which consists in cutting off old shoots, faded needles and diseased parts of the plant.
There is no definite answer about the formation of the shape of the bush. It depends on the gardener's decision. If he wants to see thuja in an interesting form on his site, then he can calmly proceed with the formation and give it an unnatural shape.
Preparation for wintering
The Kornik variety is well resistant to frost only in adulthood. When he is still a young plant, he needs shelter for the winter period and some work.
First, you need to shed the tree well so that there is enough moisture for the whole winter period, then the soil must be mulched by putting a thick layer of peat or sawdust. Then you need to fix the branches of the thuja, in order to avoid the breakage of the branches. And after all this, the thuja must be covered with material or burlap.
If the plant is very young, you can build a small greenhouse.
Protection against diseases, pests
The Kornik variety has an average resistance to diseases and pests, therefore it can become infected with improper basic care. To recognize a plant and understand how to deal with it, you need to carefully examine the thuja.
- If a yellow tint appears on young shoots, which turns into a rich yellow, and after that the shoots begin to fall off, then the thuja fell ill with a fungal disease. It is quite simple to treat it, first you need to cut it off, burn the infected parts and then treat it with Fundazol.
- Thuja can get late blight, usually this disease appears when the soil is too moist or at the wrong planting site, where there is groundwater nearby. For treatment, you will need fungicides.
- At a young age, Kornik can contract rust. This is also a fungal disease that shows itself in the form of brown spots on the shoots. For treatment, it is necessary to carry out the treatment with Hom.
- Pests on thuja are very rare, but still occur. The most common pests are caterpillars, which are destroyed by Fumitox. And also aphids, which are treated with Karbofos.
Conclusion
The Kornik variety is very interesting, so every gardener should get to know him. Thuja has an interesting color that changes in the sun and shimmers with gold. Thuja does not require special care and can grow on the site for about 200 years. Its crown lends itself well to shaping, so it can be given some unnatural, interesting shape.
Kornik will decorate any area, make the territory more neat and elegant, and will also begin to attract the attention of you and your guests, while pleasing the eye.
