Before giving preference to one or another variety, you need to familiarize yourself with its description. And also with merits. Tomato Big Mom belongs to the early maturing varieties. Large, bright red tomatoes usually mature in 90 days. The variety is determinant. This means that his height is limited. And, as a rule, it stops after the appearance of the fifth flower-fruit cluster. After that, all forces are directed to the ripening of the crop. The height of the bush is usually about 60 cm. If the soil is very fertile and you will regularly fertilize the bush, the bush may grow a little larger. But it will never grow taller than one meter.
Big Mom tomatoes are very large, fleshy, with an ideal balance of sweetness and acidity. Autumn taste is rich and pleasant. The smallest weight is from 150 gr. Large fruits can weigh up to 0.4 kg. There are seven or eight seed chambers inside. But at the same time, the seeds themselves are few. In a greenhouse, up to 10 kg of tomatoes can be obtained from one square meter. On the street, the yield of Big Mom's tomato is not so high. And the tomatoes themselves are smaller.

Large sizes do not interfere with Big Mom tomatoes withstand transportation perfectly. If we talk about various diseases, then based on the available reviews, we can conclude that these tomatoes do not get sick with good care. And diseases occur only under difficult weather conditions. And this happens, as a rule, quite rarely.
The root system of plants develops horizontally. The stem is strong and firm. There are few leaves. They are light green in color, wrinkled. They look like potato leaves. Flowers begin to appear after the fifth or seventh true leaf. Each bunch contains 5-6 fruits. The skin of the Big Momma tomatoes is smooth and rather thin. But at the same time it is very dense. Due to this, the berries of this variety rarely crack.
Big Mom tomatoes are delicious fresh. And also great for salads. Especially great when paired with mozzarella! Because of their large size, they are not suitable for preservation in their entirety. But for lecho and other seasonings they are perfect. And also for tomato paste and all kinds of sauces.
The subtleties of growing tomato seedlings Big Mom

The path to a good harvest begins with healthy and robust seedlings. This rule is true for all varieties of tomatoes. The breeders of the Gavrish company were engaged in the development and creation of the Big Mom tomato variety. So the planting material is always of very high quality. And the plants meet all the declared characteristics.
Sowing seeds should be done in early spring. The deadline for early maturing varieties is the first days of April. As a rule, the planting material is sold already processed and ready for planting. So just deepen the Big Mom tomato seeds no more than a centimeter into the ground. You can buy planting soil at your local grocery store. But you can also make the soil mixture yourself. Mix garden soil, river sand, peat, and humus.
Then the soil must be disinfected. Steam or spill it with a mild manganese solution. If you purchased Big Mom tomato seeds without pretreatment, then hold them for 15-20 minutes in the same light pink solution. Then dry it.

After planting in moist soil, cover containers with glass or cling film and place in a warm place. It will be possible to remove it after the first shoots appear, and the temperature during the first week will need to be slightly reduced and maintained around + 15 ... + 17 degrees. This is necessary so that young seedlings get stronger and do not stretch too much, which often happens in a warm room with a lack of lighting. In the future, such plants will be weak and may die.
Of course, over time, these small sprouts will turn into strong bushes, but for now they need to be very carefully looked after. Tomato seedlings need a lot of light, so they need to highlight the lightest window sill, and if possible, you can use a phytolamp in the morning and in the evening. Daylight hours should last 10-12 hours.
After a couple of weeks, when the sprouts get stronger, start gradually raising the temperature to +25 degrees, this is the optimal temperature for the comfortable growth of tomatoes. After the appearance of the second true leaf, the seedlings must be sorted into separate containers with a volume of at least 0.3 liters. If the soil mixture for the seedlings was selected or prepared correctly, then it should have enough nutrients until it is transplanted to a permanent place. But just closer to the time of transplantation, you can feed the plants with a solution prepared on the basis of ammonium nitrate, phosphate and potassium fertilizer.
A couple of weeks before the intended transplantation into the ground, the seedlings must be hardened, first blowing out into the air for 15-20 minutes and increasing this time every day. Plants should be transplanted into protected ground in early May. If you plan to transplant into open ground, then wait until the end of spring or even the first half of June - stable warm weather should be established, and the earth should warm up as well as possible.

By the time of transplantation, the tomato seedling Big Mom has five to six leaves and grows by about 25 centimeters. But before transplanting tomatoes, you need to carefully prepare the soil in the greenhouse.
Soil requirements. The earth must be well dug up. Many gardeners prefer to remove the topsoil 7-10 cm deep and fill this place with a nutritious mixture of turf and humus in equal proportions. In order to make the soil looser, you can add sawdust mixed with ash (separately, sawdust increases the acidity of the soil, and tomatoes do not like this). Then the prepared soil should be spilled for preventive purposes with a solution of "Fitolavin", which will help prevent the emergence and spread of various diseases. Seedling holes must be made every 40 cm in a row, and the distance between rows must be at least half a meter. You can buy a special soil for tomatoes at the agricultural store, you can add it to each hole when planting seedlings.
How to fertilize a Big Mom tomato?
Fertilizers. In the process of planting, fertilizers must also be added to the hole, which, gradually dissolving, will nourish the bush and enrich the soil with potassium and phosphorus, which are necessary for tomatoes at every stage of growth. Place the fertilizer a few centimeters from the root of the seedling and cover the hole with soil. Preparations such as Fertika or Kemira are suitable.
Before the plants bloom, you can carry out one or two nitrogen fertilizing. After flowering begins, nitrogen fertilizing should be stopped and from that moment on, focus on potash fertilizers. Foliar top dressing with an ash solution is especially effective during this period, thanks to which tomato bushes easily and quickly absorb nutrients. For cooking, you need to stir a glass of wood ash in a liter of hot water and leave for two days. Then the concentrate is diluted and the tomatoes are sprayed.
Watering mode for tomatoes Big Mom
Tomatoes intended for greenhouse cultivation usually like rather warm water, about +20 degrees. Perhaps this is due to the fact that at an air temperature of less than +20 degrees, tomatoes slow down growth, and watering with cold water is perceived by all plants as a decrease in the ambient temperature.
Watering is enough once every seven days, always in the morning. Watering should be carried out at the root and make sure that the soil is not waterlogged. Slightly more moisture will be required at the time of fruit formation. After the soil dries up a little, it must be loosened and a layer of mulch should be laid. It is extremely important not to forget about airing the greenhouse so that the air humidity does not rise very much, as this can affect the pollination process and deprive you of your harvest.
Stepsons. Branches growing from the axils of the main leaves are called stepchildren, they must be cut off every two weeks. For the correct formation of the bush, one or two lower stepsons must be left, and the rest are removed one at a time (if you cut everything off at the same time, this can injure the plant and lead to its illness). And when the fruits are tied and begin to grow, you can gradually begin to pick off the main leaves.
Also, at the time of planting, you need to take care of installing supports, to which you will then tie up the tomato bushes so that they do not break under the weight of the fruit.
Tomato Big Mom: reviews of gardeners

Ekaterina, Stavropol
For the second year now, we have been growing Big Mom tomatoes both on the street and in the greenhouse. Last year, Big Mom bought tomato seeds once because of the funny name and very attractive description on the seed package. Our expectations were justified - the tomatoes ripened early (in the greenhouse a little earlier than on the street), the taste is wonderful, the size of the fruits and the yield of the tomato Big Mom is also at the highest level. In the second year, it was already a deliberate choice.

Tomato Big Mom made us happy - out of ten planted bushes, not one was sick, the harvest was good and the tomatoes are delicious in autumn. All summer we made salads, prepared lecho for the winter, we are very satisfied.

This year, Big Mom planted a tomato from her seeds collected last year. So, several not strong enough supports broke under the weight of the harvest, can you imagine ?! Tomatoes of the Big Mommy variety are very beautiful and tasty, the plant itself is not capricious, so I will continue to plant it.
