3 Secret Ways to Plant Raspberries for Maximum Yields
One of the most pleasant little things for a gardener - after many hours of work with a shovel and a rake, go to a raspberry bush, pick a berry and feel its sweet unique taste. But in order for this dream to come true, you also need to make an effort and follow a few simple but very important tips on which method of planting raspberries to choose.
So how do you choose the most favorable place to plant a raspberry bush? Indeed, the choice of the place depends on how tasty the future berry harvest will be. Many gardeners, in order to plant raspberries, choose the most remote darkened places. But few people know that this is not entirely the right decision, since the harvest ultimately comes out very small.
In order for the berry to grow sweet, it needs the sun's rays and moisture, therefore, the place for planting raspberries should be chosen sunny, with sufficient moisture (but avoiding wetlands), protected from strong gusts of wind, and also necessarily with fertile soil.
It is fair to say that raspberry bushes need to be planted in the warm season, but the optimal time for planting is still autumn. It is at the beginning of autumn that there is both the necessary humidity and the absence of severe cold weather.
You also need to prepare the land for planting in advance. If, following the advice, raspberries are planted in the fall, then the planting holes must be prepared starting at least a month before the planned planting.
If the planting takes place in the spring, already at the beginning of the previous autumn it is necessary to prepare the land for it. Also, when planting in the spring, you need to remember that you should have time to plant raspberries before the first buds appear.
The main methods of planting raspberries are the pit (hole), trench and Sobolev methods. Below we will take a closer look at all three methods.
Trench method of planting raspberries on the site
The advantages of the trench method of planting raspberries on the site include saving time on caring for them. However, there are a number of planting rules according to the described method, only following which it will be possible to get a rich harvest.
So, in order to plant raspberries according to the trench planting method, you must:
Choose a place that would be well lit and not obscured by the shadow of tall trees at any time of the day.
The length of the trenches can be arbitrary, but the depth should be at least 60-70 centimeters, and the width should not be more than half a meter.
If you provide for several rows of shrubs, then a distance of at least 2 centimeters should be left between them.
To prepare for planting, a ten-centimeter layer of gravel or river sand must be poured at the bottom of the trench, and the earth itself must be mixed with natural humus. After that, mix the entire resulting mass thoroughly again and cover it with a layer of fertile soil on top.
Above the ditch, it is imperative to leave a free space of at least 40 centimeters.
From the ends at the trenches, it is necessary to install peculiar columns high enough so that the edges of the sides do not crumble in the future.
Stretch 2 rows of wire. From the ground at 30-40 cm and along the top of the posts.
After all the actions taken, you can start planting seedlings. They must be planted along clearly predetermined lines with a distance of at least one meter (preferably more) between the bushes. In order for the bush to stand firmly in the ground, the soil can be compacted around the bole. Then pour a small amount of water around the soil to saturate it with additional moisture (If you plant in hot, dry weather, you can increase the amount of water). As the seedlings grow, starting from the lower tiers, they must be tied to a wire prepared in advance.
The trench method of planting raspberries on the site is suitable mainly for large areas. For a small amount of raspberries, the pit method is suitable, which we will discuss below.
Pit method
For the pit method of planting raspberries on the site of the hole, you must start cooking a few weeks before the intended planting, observing the following rules:
To begin with, you need to dig small holes no more than 40 centimeters deep, leaving a distance of no more than 1 meter between the holes.
Prepare the mixture and fill it with fertile soil (the mixture consists of wood ash and sulphate with humus)
Pour the resulting mixture onto the bottom of the hole, pouring 15 centimeters of ordinary earth on top.
Place a barrier around the perimeter of the raspberry bushes. It can be made from slate or wooden planks.
Place the shrub in the hole, after separating and spreading the raspberry roots, then cover the hole with ready-made soil.
After all the bushes are planted, they need to be watered with a small amount of water, but several times until the ground is completely wet.
Sobolev method
This method of planting raspberries on the site is the most effective in the opinion of many experienced gardeners. It is believed that by planting berries according to the Sobolev method, there is a chance of getting up to 4 kilograms of raspberries from just one bush.
The rules for planting raspberries according to this method are as follows:
First you need to prepare a landing site. Given the special properties of raspberries, which were mentioned above, the place should be very well lit, and the direction of the garden itself should preferably be located in the direction from north to south. The next step is to create bumpers (you can make them yourself from planks or slate). It is very important that the bed was at least 15 centimeters above the ground level.
The length of the bed should be proportional to the raspberry bushes that you plan to plant, and the distance between the bushes themselves should be at least one meter. The less often the bushes are planted, the better they are illuminated and blown from all sides. Accordingly, it is much more convenient to care for them, and, most importantly, the percentage of raspberry diseases is reduced, which in turn leads to a significant increase in the yield of berries. It is also not recommended to place more than one bush in one hole.
A large harvest of berries according to the Sobolev method also depends on the correct pruning of branches. And already in the middle of spring, when the raspberries should already give the first shoots, it is necessary to cut them off. The next year, you need to carry out a second pruning, already capturing the grown side shoots.
Each of the three methods of planting raspberries on the site has its own advantages and difficulties. Do not forget that in addition to choosing the right place for planting and annual pruning of branches, raspberries need additional care. Only by observing all the conditions for the correct cultivation of raspberries, starting with choosing a place for the garden and ending with caring for the grown bushes, can you get a truly tasty and rich harvest.
