Garlic beans are not a friend! And other combinations of crops in the beds
The overwhelming majority of us live in apartment buildings, where different neighbors live behind each wall with their own habits and oddities. Someone has a cheerful and easy disposition, and someone has a nervous job or unhappy love, and everyone has their own problems. We get along with some neighbors, share news, ask for a loan of salt and sugar, and even go to visit each other, while with others we do not want to communicate at all and only say hello through clenched teeth occasionally colliding at the entrance. Believe it or not, everything happens almost the same with garden plants. Some of them feel wonderful in the same garden, protect each other from pests, enrich the soil with useful substances. And others, on the contrary, wither and wither in close proximity. So what's the right mix of cultures? What crops should be planted nearby, and which should be planted in different corners of the garden?
Let's start with dill, because it is certainly planted by all gardeners. It is good if there is a lot of space and there is an opportunity to allocate a separate bed for each crop, but most often dill is sown between rows of carrots and radishes, in potatoes or zucchini, but this is absolutely impossible! Dill can live harmoniously on the same bed only with cabbage (but with all types: cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi and white cabbage). But strawberries, on the contrary, do not like cabbage, also all types, and also zucchini. Good crop combinations for strawberry beds are onions, lettuce, sage, spinach, and beans.
Most plants do not like the neighborhood with fennel, so if you are not a gourmet who cannot live without fennel, then it is better not to plant it at all, opt for something else.
In the garden, as in cooking, basil is the ideal companion for tomatoes. With its strong smell, basil repels insects, affects the growth and taste of tomatoes.
In general, many spices and aromatic herbs can be planted throughout the garden, as they enrich the soil and help fight pests. For example, caraway seeds, lemon balm, marjoram, garden savory, thyme - all of them will benefit regardless of who they are with. Coming back to tomatoes - in addition to basil, onions, carrots, celery, parsley and lettuce will be an excellent combination of vegetables in the garden. But potatoes, cabbage and corn are better placed further away.
Any crop can be planted next to beets (except green beans), it is quite hospitable, but it is better to give preference to garlic or mint, as they accelerate the growth of beets. And beans, in turn, are well adjacent to cabbage and radish, cucumbers, carrots and corn. This is a mutually beneficial symbiosis - corn provides support for the beans, and the beans, in gratitude, feed them with nitrogen from the nodules on the roots. But beans do not like garlic and onions, and carrots and onions are just made for each other! They have different root depths, so there is no need to fight for nutrients and moisture. And also carrots scare away onion root flies, and onions - carrot flies, that is, with this neighborhood, the quality of the crop increases significantly.
In addition to all types of onions, peas, lettuce, rosemary and sage are suitable neighbors for carrots. Do not place celery and dill next to carrots.
Combination of crops with zucchini. Zucchini is not recommended to be planted next to potatoes, tomatoes, strawberries and beans. But beets, radishes and celery will grow well next to them. By the way, radish is a very sociable plant, like beets, it can be planted next to any crop, there will be no harm.
The pumpkin can be grown anywhere in the garden, the main thing is away from potatoes, this is the only neighbor whom she does not like. Next to potatoes, you can plant legumes, corn, cabbage, as well as horseradish and marigolds as guards against pests.
Yes, at first it is difficult to remember who does not love whom and how to place everyone in the garden as comfortably as possible. But over time, you will get used to planning the planting of companion crops, and learn the right combination of crops. You will see, it will have a beneficial effect on your harvest!
