Red currant Sugar is a hybrid plant. Made in Russia. The bush has many branches, erect shoots. The leaves are pentagonal in shape with denticles along the edges. The buds are elongated, in the form of an ellipse, are brown in color when they have not yet blossomed.
Flowers are collected in tassels. The flower is cup-shaped or saucer-shaped. Petals are yellow with a greenish tint. A fully ripe handful reaches a length of up to 10 cm. Each cluster sets about 20 fruits. Ripe berries are bright red in color, they have a sweet taste, pleasant aroma, are used fresh and are good in preparations.
By the way, let's dispel the myth. In the markets you can find black currant "Sugar", it is compared with a red friend. This is not so - they are not congeners. Under this "name" is the "Ordinary Miracle" variety.
pros Sugar red currant varieties will help you learn about it better:
- The yield indicator with good agricultural technology is 7 kg / bush.
- The shrub is decorative, it can be used to decorate the territory.
- Fruits are appreciated for their deliciousness of desserts.
- Winter is not afraid of currants, temperature drops are not terrible.
- It bears fruit for a long time - from the beginning of the second summer month to late autumn days.
- Agrotechnology is simple, since the variety is not capricious.
- Produces fruits up to 25 years, while the yield does not decrease.
- It is immune to harmful insects.
- Bunches with fruits last for a long time, have good transportability.
Red currant Sugar is used for making juices, jams, preserves, for freezing, for compotes. Also, excellent wines are prepared from currants, because berries contain a large amount of sugar.
There are minuses: fruits of medium size; a small percentage of self-fertility - only 30%; bushes can get sick with anthracnose.
A high yield rate should not be expected if only "Sugar" currants are grown on the territory. As mentioned above, one of the drawbacks is the poor self-pollination rate. For pollination to be at the level, it is necessary to plant other varieties for cross-pollination.
Red currant Sugar has better cold weather tolerance than black currant. For this reason, the variety can be cultivated in cold climates and in Siberia. The best time for the bushes to take root is September. In warm areas, seedlings can be planted in October. If you plant a variety in the spring season, then the best time is March, but one way or another it is necessary to be guided by the mood of the weather.
Bushes planted in the autumn season adapt better. Until the winter season, their successful rooting takes place. Frosty temperatures will temper the “young organism”. And in the springtime the currant is ready to grow and develop.
Sugar red currant: how to choose seedlings

The propagation of our variety is carried out by seedlings. The further development of the shrub and, of course, the yield indicator depend on their qualitative characteristics.Criteria for choosing seedlings: light brown color of the root system, its length is from 15 cm, the rhizome should include a large number of thin roots and the main root; the part that is above the ground must undergo a "medical examination" - it is necessary that there are no dry kidneys, spots, growths, bumps, the bark must be intact; the height of the part located above the ground should be approximately 40 cm.
It is recommended to purchase bushes from the nursery. Saplings 100% will give good shrubs even if they were mailed to you. Because in the nursery, the seedlings are properly looked after and stored correctly, so the bushes will take root on your site for sure. And plus you will not be slipped into a fake variety, which is usually the case in the markets.
Choosing a place for planting

Our variety likes to live on sandy loam soil or light loam. If the soil is acidic and clayey, this will only depress the roots. On such soils, poor growth of currants is observed, a low yield rate, and in the future, currants may disappear altogether.
It will also be necessary to make elevations if groundwater passes high on the territory. You can make a whole ridge or separate embankments for each bush individually. Roots develop in the surface layer of the soil, so hills can be made 40 cm high.
Sugar currant red currants like conditions with good illumination and sunlight. The planting site should be well ventilated. Due to free air movement, plants will be less affected by powdery mildew. But here, too, there are nuances - drafts are a bad type of ventilation, in addition, they can destroy the bushes. In order to protect the bushes from drafts, plants are planted near buildings, fences without cracks.
Landing rules

A good survival rate of the bushes is observed if they were planted in spring and autumn. Still, it is better to plant plants in the autumn season, this also applies to all other varieties. The best time for planting is September. Until frost has come, the plants will have time to take root. Our variety has compact bushes, and therefore the spacing between plants can be made 1.2 m.
Planting stages.
- Dig a hole. Depth - 40 cm, diameter - 50-60 cm
- A nutrient mixture is being prepared, you need to take fertile soil and compost fertilizer. If the soil is acidic, then chalk, lime or old clay plaster must be added to it. Each hole requires a bucket of mix and ½ bucket of water.
- At the moment when moisture is absorbed into the soil, the plant is placed at an angle of 45 degrees. The roots need to be straightened along the bottom of the hole, then covered with soil. Above the root collar, the height of the soil layer should be 5 cm. Planting to a depth allows you to grow shoots at the roots from buried buds.
- The loosened soil around the circumference of the plant is slapped with hands. The hole must be poured with 3 buckets of water in turn. If, after the water has been absorbed, the roots have crawled up, they must be covered with loose soil. Then the planting is mulched with peat or sawdust.
- After planting all the plants from each seedling, it is necessary to cut off the tops, about 1/3 of the length.
Sugar red currant: agrotechnical techniques

A high yield rate is fully dependent on agricultural technology. Our variety does not require direct special care, but basic procedures should be done: watering, weeding, fertilizing, cutting.
Watering.
Most currant varieties do not care about moisture, but our variety loves water. But the soil should not be turned into a swamp. So much moisture is needed so that the soil around the circle of the plant is soaked 50 cm deep.Insufficient amount of water at the time of fruit pouring will "contribute" to their falling off.
The water must be poured exactly at the root. It is impossible to water the leaves in hot weather. Nor can irrigation be used when the plants are in bloom. How many times to water - see the mood of the weather. If the summer is dry, then an adult plant needs 5 buckets of water under the root every 10 days. If the summer is cool and wet, then watering is carried out every 20 days.
Removing weeds and loosening the soil.
There should be no weeds under the seedlings. You need to remove them regularly. When small weeds appear, the soil needs to be weeded with a hoe, this procedure will prevent the weed grass from taking root. In the spring and autumn seasons, the soil must be loosened and fed immediately. For simplicity, you can apply mulching. Mulched with peat or sawdust, they help to maintain moisture, prevent the formation of a dry crust, and reduce the growth of weeds.
Top dressing.
During the first two years, you do not need to make additional fertilizing. The bushes have enough nutrients that were introduced during planting. It is necessary to start feeding at the 3rd year of plant life. A solution of nitroammophoska is applied to each seedling. Dry fertilizer, the size of a matchbox, must be dissolved in 10 liters of water.
Our variety likes fertilizing with fertilizers containing nitrogen. They feed 10 g of nitrate or urea per 1 m2 of soil.
Pruning.
The next year after planting, in the autumn season, 3-4 branches should appear from the plant. They need to be shortened with pruning shears, but leave the processes on which there are 4 buds. In the spring, branches will appear from the buds, bearing fruits and young shoots. Subsequent pruning also occurs. The result is a bush with 15-20 branches that bear fruit. Pruning is carried out in the autumn season, and in the spring, shoots that are frozen and damaged are cut off.
Preparing for the winter season.
The variety we are considering has excellent cold tolerance without any shelter. You can pour soil on the roots, thereby insulating them. It is recommended to tie the bush with twine, this will prevent the plant from breaking with snowdrifts. You can tie the currant to the support. For areas that are located in the north, you can create such protection - cover the bushes with Agro fiber. It is forbidden to use a film shelter, because in places of contact, the bark can receive cryo burns.

About the variety of red currant Sugar respond more positively than negatively. The plant is appreciated in summer cottages. Also, currants are grown for sale by small farms.
Tatiana: I have been growing the Sugar Red Currant for seven years already. There is not much trouble with my two bushes. In the summer I do watering, in the fall I do pruning and fertilize twice a year. The fruits are sweet, not sour, for this I like this currant variety. In order for the bushes to be well pollinated, I planted another variety of red currant "Beloved" nearby.
Roman: “I bought 5 different varieties of red currants in the nursery. I liked the Sugar Red Currant the most, because it has an excellent taste and gives a rich harvest. I thought at first to remove the rest of the varieties from the site altogether, but they are needed by Sugar for pollination. Therefore, I left 2 old bushes. And he planted 3 more "Sugar" bushes. From the fruits I make jam, by the way, very tasty. I even made a liqueur.
