Blackcurrant Binar
Content:
Black currant Binar is quite popular among domestic gardeners. Such sympathies are easily explained by the presence of the following advantages of the variety: large size of berries, ability to long-term storage and transportation, excellent taste and aroma of fruits, stability and regularity in fruiting, frost resistance and strong immunity to many diseases.

Differs in high winter hardiness and resistant protection against powdery mildew and kidney mites. Berry bushes of the black currant variety Binar are self-pollinated with excellent, stable yield.
From the history of selection
Blackcurrant Binar was obtained by specialists of the Pavlovsk All-Russian Research Institute for Plant Growing. The work was carried out by the originators T.V. Arsenyeva, E.V. Volodina, O.A. Tikhonova, S.P. Khotimskaya.
The Binar currant variety was developed by crossing “Ojebin"And" Dressy "and entered into the State Register in 1991. Recommended regions for this currant are the Northern and Northwestern part of Russia, as well as the Far East.

Blackcurrant Binar is a tall shrub with a medium spreading crown. The small size of young branches has pubescence and a thin greenish bark. Old fruiting thick shoots also have a light down, but their bark is brown.
On the branches, there is medium deciduous thickening. The leaves of the plant are small, dull green, 5-lobed. In spring, sometimes the twigs are covered with light pink buds.
The Binar currant variety has an average ripening period. One bush gives up to 3 kilograms of berries.
The weight of one berry is up to 1.5 g. The berry is oval in shape with a strong, glossy, black rind.
Blackcurrant Binar - with dense, sweet and sour, aromatic pulp. As part of the berries:
- ascorbic acids (143 mg / 100 g);
- sugar (3.3%);
- pectin (1%);
- P-substance (375 mg / 100 g);
- acid (3.3%);
- dry matter (19.8%).
Interestingly, unripe berries contain more vitamin C than ripe ones.
Blackcurrant Binar: pros and cons
The advantages of the Binar currant variety include: large size of berries, ability for long storage and transportation, excellent taste and aroma of fruits, stability and regularity in fruiting, frost resistance and strong immunity to many diseases (in particular, kidney mites), versatility in application (juice, jam, jam).
The disadvantages of the Binar currant variety include: shedding of ripe berries, pronounced sour taste of the pulp.
Black currant Binar: planting and care
Agrotechnical techniques consist of proper planting and proper care of plants. Regular adherence to agrotechnical standards will allow you to grow healthy black currant bushes and get excellent yields.
How to choose a seat and plant
The optimal time to plant Binar currants is:
- autumn, at the end of the growing season;
- spring, before the period of movement of juices.
It is best to choose a well-lit area for planting, since the plant needs bright sunlight; with moderate moisture and loose, drained soil (loamy or sandy loam).
Before planting Binar currants, loosen the place and remove weeds. The dug hole should be 0.6 m in diameter, and the approximate depth is 0.4 m. Next, you need to mix compost or humus (5 kg) and wood ash (150 g) and fill it into the hole.Having placed the bush in the hole, you need to carefully spread the roots and cover them with soil.
Distances between plantings should be 1.5 meters, rows - 2 meters.
After planting the bushes, spill them well and mulch with sawdust.
Care standards
For active development and fruiting, the plant must be regularly watered and fed.
If the weather is mild, then watered about 5 times during the growing season: early spring; during the formation of buds; when the ovaries appear; when tiny berries appear; when the harvest is harvested.
In hot summer watered every 7-10 days, the approximate amount of watering for one bush is 5 buckets of water.
Now about top dressing. The following scheme should work here:
- March-April (beginning of the growing season) - 50 g with urea for 1 bush, a 4-year-old bush is given 25 to 40 g of substance twice;
- autumn - after picking berries, compost (5 kg), potassium sulfate (15 g) and superphosphate (50 g) are added under the bush.
How to defeat diseases and pests

Blackcurrant variety Binar has excellent immunity from powdery mildew, kidney mites, anracnosis, etc. But it can get sick with fungal diseases - septoria or rust.
With septoria leaves are covered with light yellow spots with brownish specks.
With rust leaf blades are covered with orange dry growths.
Fight against fungal diseases with the help of fungicides (for example, 1% Bordeaux liquid). They are applied to the bushes three times at two-week intervals. About one and a half liters of medicinal solution is enough for one bush.
Septoria and anthracnose can be cured with Fitosporin-M by mixing 5 grams of the drug with 10 liters of water. Spray the bushes at the rate of 1 liter of solution per 10 square meters of garden. To completely get rid of the disease, you need 3 sprays with a break of 2-3 weeks. With a mild form of the disease, two sprays are enough.
You can effectively solve the problem with the drug "PropiPlus". From 7 to 10 ml of the product must be diluted in water (10 l) and sprayed twice with an interval of 3 weeks. For one bush, no more than 1 liter of the product is required.
Now about the pests. Binar blackcurrant bushes can be attacked by:
- aphids, light midges, which attach themselves to the inside of the leaves and feed on the sap of the plant;
- spider mite, it manifests itself as a spider-like bloom on the leaves;
- glass pan, black with yellowish stripes, winged insects, similar to wasps, lay their eggs on the branches.
It is possible to fight these pests with insecticides, for example, with the help of Actellik. Prepare a solution by mixing it with water (1 ml / 1 l). It should be remembered that to process 10 square meters of area (this is about 10 bushes), you will need up to 2 liters of solution.
It is possible to cope with spider mites and aphids with the help of:
- "Intavira", prepare a solution (1 tablet per 10 liters of water) and spray the plants before they bloom and at the end of the harvest;
- "Fitoverma", prepare a solution (2 ml per 1 liter of water) and process the bushes 2 times with a break of 2 weeks (for 1 bush you will need up to 1.5 liters).
About pruning and shaping bushes
Formative pruning is carried out in the spring and at the end of the seasonal growing season.
Here is an approximate pruning plan for 6 years.
- Immediately after planting the bushes, a certain number of shoots are shortened, leaving 2-3 buds on a branch on them.
- In the 2nd year, 3 to 5 branches are left and pinched into two buds, and the other branches are removed.
- In the 3rd year, last year's branches are deprived of the tops, leaving from 2 to 4 buds.
- For the 4th year I do what I do for the 3rd.
- In the 5th year, the old branches are shortened to 2-4 buds, pinching the top of each last year's shoot. Young shoots are left in the amount of 3-5 pieces and pinched on two buds. The remaining branches are removed.
- On the 6th year I do what on the 5th.
As a result, in 6 years the base of the bush will form - skeletal branches in the amount of 15-20 pieces.
Do not forget about the annual spring sanitary pruning (before the beginning of the growing season), as a result of which they get rid of broken, frozen, affected shoots and branches that are more than 6 years old.
Any cut must be processed with a garden varnish.
How black currant Binar winters
The Binar currant variety has high winter hardiness. In late autumn, a little preparation is still needed - protection of the root system. For this purpose, loosening and mulching of the trunk circle is carried out using peat and compost.
On the collection, storage and transportation of berries
The berry must be picked as it ripens. Ripeness is indicated by a pronounced black skin. The keeping quality and transportability of the Binar black currant can be said to be high. At a low temperature, the berry is stored for about a month. Can be frozen for the winter.
Growing a variety of black currant Binar is not difficult, of course, if agrotechnical standards are observed. The Binar currant is unpretentious, but still some effort is needed. But for any care and concern, the Binar variety of black currants will reward you with a delicious and ripe harvest.
