Plum Renclode
Content:
The Renclode plum is one of the most popular and, in fact, the best plum that exists at the moment. She is a favorite not only among amateur gardeners, but also among real professionals who know exactly what qualities paint a fruit plant. However, Renclode is not just one single variety, but a whole group of varieties, each of which has distinctive qualities, which include especially large and very tasty fruits, as well as fairly simple plant care and other positive qualities, about which little will be written below.
However, despite all the advantages of this plant, the taste of the fruit is, of course, most appreciated, since, according to the words of both experts and independent tasters, it is really outstanding, moderately sweet, but still a little sour. Simply put, dessert.
Origin of the Renclode group of varieties
This plum, like almost all that are currently widely grown in the national economy, was bred thanks to achievements in the field of breeding. First of all, the basis of this plant includes thorns and cherry plums, which, however, are the progenitors of absolutely all plums on earth.
However, Renclaude is an incredibly old plant, the age of which is incomparable to any of the other varieties of plum, which currently occupy a leading position, since it was known and widespread already in the sixteenth century. The name of this plum was given in honor of Queen Claudine (abbreviated as Claude). In general, this is exactly how this variety is translated from French: Queen Claude.
There is an assumption that the beginning of all varieties of the Renclode plum was the Renclode green variety, since it is the records about it that date back to the most ancient years. However, there is no better evidence for this assumption.
Plum Renclode: description of the species
Absolutely all Renklods have certain signs by which trees of a given species can be easily identified. They are pretty explicit, so you should be aware of them:
- The tree most often reaches a height of about five to seven meters. His crown is absolutely rounded. Nevertheless, if you do not engage in pruning, it begins to lose its ideal shape over time, and therefore you should be careful to maintain it.
- The branches of the tree are painted in a gradient shade that starts with reddish-brown and ends with gray. Also, the branches gradually become less and less colorful as they mature.
- The leaves are covered with a short and almost invisible pile. You can also notice very clearly visible veins on them. Their shape is ovoid, tapering towards the ends on both sides.
However, perhaps, if you are going to plant this tree, yourself fruit, most likely, you care much more than the branches and leaves of the Renklodes. However, it is precisely for its plums that this species is famous, and therefore it is their description that is the most detailed detailed.
In shape, they most often resemble either a ball or a slightly flattened ellipse. The diameter of these plums reaches about five to four centimeters, which is quite an impressive result for plums, given that this is not a record achieved once, but an average value.
Enough has been said about taste. It is incredibly pleasant, and on a five-point scale, the world's best experts rated it four and eight tenths - four and nine tenths. Its amazing dessert texture is especially striking.
In addition, it should be noted that the fruits do not have a thick skin, and therefore, in addition to the fact that they are amazingly tasty, it is pleasant to eat them and because of how convenient it is. The pulp can be described as real jelly or marmalade.
Also, do not forget that a thin waxy coating is observed on the skin, which it is advisable not to damage when picking the fruit. Nevertheless, it is very easy to damage it, and therefore it will not work in any case to keep it on the fruit for a long time.
The weight of a single fruit can vary significantly more than its size. However, on average, it reaches about thirty grams, if we find the arithmetic mean of absolutely all varieties of this vast species.
The colors, like the mass, also vary, and therefore you can find both varieties that offer greenish fruits, and those that grow yellow, red, purple and even blue plums.
Plum variety Renclode - pros and cons
As you may have noticed, this type of plum has a huge number of undeniable advantages. Nevertheless, it would be naive to believe that even this variety does not have any drawbacks. However, since gardeners from all over the world still consider this species to be the best, these shortcomings are obviously not critical.
pros kind:
- First of all, of course, one cannot fail to note again the exceptional taste qualities of this variety, which allow gardeners who grow this plant for the purpose of sale, earn their living and create good competition with other varieties on the market.
- Also, we must not forget about other advantages, which, however, were not mentioned earlier, such as, for example, excellent frost resistance, which will be especially appreciated by those who live in our region, as well as drought resistance, which allows the tree to survive there too. where there is practically no rain all year round.
- High yields are also a very important factor for both traders and those who grow plums exclusively for themselves.
- Also, this tree is distinguished by its simply amazing early maturity, which any other plum can hardly boast of. You can harvest a tree from a tree three to four years after planting a seedling.
- The composition of the soil has practically no significance for this tree, which means that for the sake of it you do not have to dig up an entire area, enriching it.
- Speaking about the protection of a tree from all kinds of influences, one cannot fail to notice that it resists fungal diseases very well.
- The fruits of this type also differ in that they are universal. Someone says that it is better to eat them raw, while others - that they are ideal for preparing various dishes. Most beautiful of all is the fact that all these people are absolutely right.
It should also be noted that the tastes of many varieties belonging to this species differ significantly from each other, despite the fact that they always retain high quality.
Minuses:
- The most important disadvantage of this tree is that almost all Renclode varieties (with very rare exceptions) are self-fertile, and therefore, when planting one tree, you will also have to worry about planting a pollinator with it.
- Fruiting can sometimes be interrupted. This happens unexpectedly, however, nevertheless, very rarely.
- Productivity strongly depends not only on how well you take care of the plant, but also on weather conditions and other unforeseen and uncontrollable factors.
- Like most plants, Renklode suffers from the fact that with high humidity, its roots begin to rot. However, most gardeners have long been familiar with this problem and know how to prevent it.
- The species is very afraid of drafts, and therefore it definitely needs protection from them. In case of severe drought or, conversely, constant dampness, the fruits grow quite small.
- The most difficult procedure that will be associated with a tree is pruning, because in order to maintain its shape, it must be done regularly and very carefully. Pruning is also complicated by the fact that the branches of this plant are extremely fragile and brittle, and therefore it is very easy to damage them. Therefore, pruning should always be done with an extremely sharp and good tool so as not to cause more damage to the tree than necessary. However, this is not the only problem with branch fragility. They can also be damaged by heavy snowfall or even under the weight of the plant's own fruits.
Where is the best place to grow?
The Renclode plum grows almost all over the world, since for a long time of its existence varieties have been bred that are perfectly adapted to almost all climatic conditions. They can be found both in Greece or Italy, and in Spain, Russia, America and other countries. There are even particularly frost-resistant varieties that are specially adapted to grow in the harsh conditions of Siberia.
Nevertheless, do not forget that Renclaude is still a thermophilic species, and therefore growing it in the conditions of our region is far from being as effective as it could be in countries with a more favorable climate. This is especially true for middle and northern latitudes. Therefore, you cannot find a better place to grow this species than the south of our country.
It is here that the plant reveals its potential one hundred percent. In addition, despite the rather good winter hardiness of the plant, growing in those places where the temperature in winter drops below twenty-five degrees is especially not recommended, since the plant may suffer.
Plum ranklody, varieties
The Renclaude species is incredibly extensive and varied, and it includes many dozen completely different varieties. At the same time, they differ not only in the size and color of the fruit, as you might have noticed earlier, but also in the size of the tree itself and, of course, in various agrotechnical characteristics.
You can also note that they all ripen at different times, and therefore, if you want your plum to ripen by a certain date, you have a huge field for choosing a variety that will meet exactly these requirements.
However, a huge choice also means a huge responsibility, since all varieties were bred not just to make plums of a different color or slightly larger than usual, but in order to create plants that are ideally adapted to certain climatic conditions.
Therefore, when you choose a variety, you should definitely pay attention to the latitude in which it shows the best results, as well as to what extent this latitude coincides with yours. And in order to make it easier for you to decide on the choice, we present to you several objectively the best varieties of this type, which really deserve your attention and may turn out to be the very ideal variety that you are looking for.
Renclode presidential
This variety is one that ripens relatively late. However, it has an amazing plus: self-fertility. However, it is not complete, but partial. Plums ripen by about mid-September. However, despite this, in principle, the plant begins to bear fruit quite early: already in the third year of its growth, for which it is very loved.
From this it is not difficult to figure out that the trees of this variety are fast-growing, but they can hardly be called tall. Basically, they fit perfectly into the growth rate for plums. They reach a height of about four meters.
The yield is especially plentiful, but before it reaches its peak, it will take a few more years to take care of the plum, since in the first years it will bring no more than fifteen kilograms, but having already matured - about forty - forty-five. However, this will definitely require pollinators, without which such good results simply cannot be achieved.
The best pollinators for this variety are Hungarian and Edinburgh plum. Speaking of fruits, it should be noted that they have an incredibly regular round shape, and therefore have an amazing presentation. Perhaps we can say that it is this variety that belongs to the most pleasing to the eye plums. In addition, their weight reaches about fifty-five to sixty grams, which is practically equal to small pears.
The wax coating is especially thick and is removed by more than one touch of the fruit. As for the taste, it is perfectly balanced: it contains both sweet and sour notes that do not interfere with each other, but only complement.
The pulp is very thick and soft, which, however, may not be to everyone's taste. Its color is yellow-orange. The stone is oval: it is practically invisible in the process of eating or preparing dishes from this plum, since it separates incredibly easily. The peel of the fruit is nevertheless very firm. You could even say she's pretty rude.
For traders, this is a significant plus, as it helps to transport fruits over very long distances. On the other hand, not everyone likes fruits with such an "oak" skin.
In general, to summarize, the following should be noted pros of this variety:
- It has amazing early maturity and fairly regular fruiting, the interruption of which can be associated exclusively with very serious problems.
- It should also be noted that the variety winters very well even in rather cold regions of our country.
- And, of course, the ability of the variety to endure transportation practically without any problems, even with relatively serious shaking.
However, of course, without cons also nowhere, and they are as follows:
- The plant is subject to a fairly large list of diseases, and therefore you will definitely have to take care of prevention.
- Also, the plant can hardly tolerate the cool summer seasons, when there is a lot of moisture in the air. Under these conditions, the fruits grow slightly immature.
Renclaude green
As you remember, this particular variety is a contender for the title of the oldest plum - Renclaude, which is known to mankind. Nevertheless, even despite its advanced age, this variety is still considered one of the best and is recognized as a true standard of French breeding.
The trees of this variety are quite large and reach a height of at least six to seven meters. The crown reaches approximately the same size in width. It can also be noted that with its growth the tree has a fairly large number of all kinds of trunk bends. The fruits ripen in August, and very rarely at the very beginning of September.
Unfortunately, without a pollinator, the variety is absolutely incapable of bearing fruit, and therefore planting it is mandatory if you want to get not just a bountiful harvest, but at least some kind of harvest. However, if a good pollinator is selected, such as, for example, Vengerka or Altana, then the harvest will be really worthy.
Young trees bring about thirty kilograms, and adults - at least fifty. Despite the fact that the fruits of this variety look more like unripe walnuts than real plums, they have a simply amazing taste, which is noted by both professionals and independent tasters.
The weight of each individual fruit is approximately equal to twenty five to thirty grams. Their shape is also spherical, like that of the previous variety. The color of the fruit, as you can see by looking at the name of the variety, is green, and therefore this plum is considered quite unusual and even delicious. The pulp does not have any color and may even appear transparent.
One of the most important advantages varieties is that it is completely unpretentious to care for, and therefore, even taking into account the fact that you have to grow as many as two trees, most likely, you will hardly have any problems with this. The unpretentiousness of this variety also means that it can grow on almost any soil, regardless of its qualities.
Nevertheless, you should always monitor how much you moisturize this plant, since it is the excess moisture that is truly fatal for it. The plant's immunity is, however, pretty good. Of course, it cannot protect it from any disease (especially with regard to rot), however, you will definitely have to think less about preventing diseases than usual.
Among the factors growing, which this variety is especially fond of, it is possible to note the good illumination of the place where you grow it, as well as the regularity of all procedures.
Multiply a tree, by the way, can even be seeds, and at the same time it will even retain all its varietal qualities. However, propagation by shoots or cuttings is much more commonly used. By the way, an interesting fact is that not all gardeners who grow Green Renklode have an idea of how ancient and epoch-making it is. They just call it the green plum.
Renklode Tambovsky
This variety is genetically derived, and it is based on Green Renklode and red Skorospelka... As a result, these two plants gave birth to a rather entertaining hybrid that absorbed the best qualities of both and covered their disadvantages.
The trees reach a height of no more than four meters, which is especially convenient when harvesting, as well as during the pruning procedure. The crown does not have any form and is most often spreading.
The variety, like the previous one, requires that a pollinator be planted next to it, of which it would be best to choose a collective farm Renklod or Green. Skorospelka is also suitable, since these varieties are maternal for this Renklode.
Of course, since this tree is far from being as tall as the previous ones, then less fruit is collected from it. On average, the amount of the harvested crop with good pollination and care is fifteen to twenty kilograms.
Plums ripen around the beginning of September, and therefore the plant can be called relatively early. The first harvest appears after four years, which, of course, is an indisputable advantage of the variety.
As for the fruits themselves, they are not too large. Their average weight reaches about twenty grams. And their shape is much less spherical than that of the above giant varieties. The color of the fruit is purple, however, pinkish-purple overflows are very often found on it. Also on the surface of the fruit is a large amount of bluish bloom.
The pulp has a yellowish tinge, and it will also please those who prefer the sourness in plums, and not the sweet aspect of their taste. Nevertheless, much more often than for consumption raw, the fruits of this plant are canned or used to make preserves, jams and other things.
Also, wine is often made from this plum. TO merits varieties can be ranked and its special frost resistance, since it can withstand up to twenty-five degrees calmly and without any damage, and minor damage begins to manifest itself only at thirty. Moreover, it is without protection.
Nevertheless, this frost resistance is inherent mainly in the buds of the plant, but the shoots may not withstand such temperatures. Disadvantage plants are particularly vulnerable to certain fungal and viral diseases. However, it is not as critical if it takes good care of disease prevention.
Renklode tenikovsky
This variety is popularly called another name: Tatar. His tree is rather short. Its height does not even reach four meters, and therefore, obviously, the variety is not suitable for everyone. Nevertheless, its crown is quite well shaped and has a fairly accurate natural spherical shape, which, however, should sometimes be maintained.
The first harvest of trees of this variety appears at about the fourth year of life, and the fruits ripen by the middle of the first month of autumn. The Tatar plum, like most on this list, definitely needs a pollinator in order to bring a regular and good harvest. Such a pollinator can be, for example, Sineglazka or Eurasia. Also, almost any thorny plum can act as a pollinator.
The fruits of the plant have a rather beautiful rounded shape, even though their weight hardly reaches twenty grams. The pulp, although quite soft, is also grainy, and its hue can be described as yellowish carrot. By the way, it is rather difficult to call it very juicy. Nevertheless, those who like sourness in plums will definitely like the variety.
Fruit color can range from purple to purple. However, they tend to lean towards pinkish-purple tones more often.
The plant can hardly be called very frost- or drought-resistant, but these characteristics are still developed in it. However, there is a high risk of contracting a disease such as rust or clotting disease.
Renklod Karpyshev
This variety was bred by Ukrainian breeders relatively recently (at least by the standards of Renklods). This variety ripens in the second half of August and very, very rarely - in early September, and therefore it can be called early.
The tree grows quite quickly, but at the same time uncontrollably, and therefore, if you want the crown to be neat and easy to harvest from it, you should take care of regular and high-quality pruning.
Unfortunately, it also belongs to the group of self-fruitless plums, and therefore requires a pollinator. The following varieties can play its role: early Renklode or Hungarian Donetsk. The fruits grow quite large, and their weight reaches about fifty grams.
However, the tree will not always bear such large and massive fruits. The fact is that as it ages, its plums become smaller and smaller. As a result, the oldest trees bear fruit weighing about thirty-five grams, which, however, is still quite a lot. The pulp is incredibly juicy, silky and tasty.
Among Renklods, this variety has perhaps the highest taste rating among expert gardeners: four and eight tenths of points. Nevertheless, the plant clearly lacks good frost resistance, since it is average.
The maximum frost that the plant can withstand without any loss is about twenty degrees Celsius.
Also from disadvantages it should be noted the incredibly thin skin, which, of course, is good when eating the fruit raw, but does not help in any way to transport the fruit, keeping them intact.
Renclaude white
The ripening period for this variety begins in the middle or at the end of August. The height of this tree most often reaches four to five meters. Due to its small size, the variety has a rather impressive early maturity: by the third year of its growth, it begins to bear fruit.
Unfortunately, this variety is also sterile, and therefore you will need pollinators. Renklode green is best suited for this role, but Altana can also be used.
The fruits, as you can understand, are distinguished by their unusual, almost white color. However, their shade is still more green. However, this does not affect their amazing taste in any way. You can even say that it is for them that we love this variety. Its pulp is very tender and juicy. However, it has practically no weight. The mass of fruits is approximately equal to forty grams, but this exponentially decreases gradually as the plant grows. However, it is rather insignificant.
The variety can also be praised for its fairly good frost resistance, and, of course, for its drought resistance. Speaking of frost, it should be noted that this plant easily tolerates temperatures of about twenty-five degrees Celsius.
However, large minus of this variety is that the blanks made from it are completely unpresentable, and therefore it is mainly suitable only for fresh consumption.
Renclaude yellow
This variety reaches a height of about five to six meters, and its fruits are more like apricots than plums. The crown of the tree is very wide. On average, the harvest that you manage to collect is approximately twenty to thirty kilograms. However, only an adult tree can boast of such results, while a young one gives much less fruit: about ten kilograms.
The tree can produce fruits without pollinators, but planting them is still preferable. Varieties such as Egg Blue or Tulskaya are perfect as pollinating plants.
The tree begins to bear fruit in the fourth year of life. The fruits, as already mentioned, are very similar to apricots or even peaches. They have a yellowish-orange hue, which distinguishes them from almost all plums. However, a distinct greenish tint is observed on young, not yet ripe fruits.
The shape of the plums is almost perfect - spherical. It should only be noted that they are quite a bit flattened on the sides. Their pulp is incredibly tasty and juicy. It tastes sweet and sour, but none of the aspects of this flavor range are dominant. Nevertheless, gardeners estimate the palatability of these fruits far from being as high as that of some other Renklods, and therefore their rating is only about four points.
The weight of each individual fruit reaches approximately twenty to thirty grams. The wax is worn, observed on the skin of absolutely every fruit, is rather thick, and therefore it is also not easy to damage it. Despite the fact that the taste ratings of this variety are not record-breaking, it still leads among Renklods in one aspect: this particular variety has the highest vitamin C content among them.
TO pluses varieties can also be ranked as its amazing transportability as well as relatively good frost resistance (about twenty-five degrees below zero). In general, the variety is ideal for growing in the Moscow region, and also shows its best qualities in the middle zone of our country.
Renclaude blue
This variety can be commended for being completely self-fertile and does not need pollination at all. You can also note its average frost resistance. In addition, the variety is loved, among other things, because it quickly reaches its fruiting age, and already three years after planting, it is possible to harvest from such a tree.
The crown, although it has an oval shape, is still rather sloppy and uneven. On average, about thirty kilograms of berries ripen on it. Each fruit weighs about thirty-five to forty grams. Their flesh has a pleasant lemon flavor, and its taste can be described as slightly sour. The peel of the fruit has a violet-blue hue. You can also see darker spots on its surface.
The fruits, since they are slightly smaller in size than the previous ones, have a far from ideal shape. However, they still don't quite look like an American football ball. The plant is far from ideal coping with various diseases, and therefore you will have to wage a stubborn and constant struggle with them, your main weapon in which will be good prevention. At the same time, the plant has a fairly good cold resistance, and therefore it will definitely not suffer from frost.
TO pluses can be attributed to the fact that the plant bears fruit completely without interruption: annually. This variety is grown and reaches its ideal in the South of Russia, however, unfortunately, the disadvantage of this variety is that it is completely unsuitable for the production of compotes.
Renclaude De Bove
This variety first of all won the hearts of gardeners because it is completely self-fertile, which means you do not have to worry about planting a pollinator with this tree. In addition, trees of this variety grow quite quickly, and their fruits ripen in mid-to-late September.
Also to pluses can be attributed to the fact that after full ripening, the fruits do not fall to the ground, but remain hanging on the tree for several more weeks, which allows you to harvest without unnecessary difficulties and confusion.
From one ten-year-old tree, you can collect about fifty kilograms of harvest, but fifteen-year-old trees are quite capable of bringing up to hundreds of kilograms of fruit.
As for the fruits themselves, they have a yellow color tending to green. Their flesh is very sweet and tender, and in its gustatory range you can feel the nutmeg taste. A very dense silvery coating is observed on the skin of the fruit, which, however, is quite easy to wipe off. It is damaged even by moisture that gets on the fruit.
This variety is very fond of warmth, and therefore it lives best in warm places, such as the Crimea or the Caucasus. Also, the variety takes root pretty well in the Krasnodar Territory. However, there is also a significant minus: This variety can give a good harvest only if the autumn is also warm enough, and therefore inappropriate weather conditions can significantly reduce the average value of the weight of the crop that you will harvest.
However, the rest of the variety is very good: it tolerates transportation over long distances remarkably, and is also resistant to such pests as the moth. It should also be noted that the tree may need protection from the rain, as with heavy summer rains, the fruits may burst.
Renklode soviet
This variety is relatively young, as it was bred in the eighties of the previous century. It has been specially designed to grow in temperate areas without any problems.
The first harvest is taken around the fourth year after planting, and the height of the tree reaches only three to four meters. The advantage of the tree is that, with a rather small size, it retains a moderate leaf coverage, and therefore a huge amount of light comes to the fruits, due to which they develop large and juicy.
The fruits ripen at the end of August, however, as you probably already guessed, under certain weather conditions, this date may shift to the beginning or even mid-September.
The amount of the harvest is gradually increasing. In young plants, it is approximately equal to fifteen kilograms, but in adults it can grow to forty (of course, if you take good care of the tree).
The average weight of fruits is forty grams, regardless of the age of the tree. Their color can be described as inky or purple, and a thin bluish bloom forms on the skin. The pulp has the color of amber, and its taste is distinguished by one of the highest ratings among Renklode plums, which is equal to four and eight tenths of points. However, fruits that taste so good will of course have their drawbacks.
With prolonged exposure to low temperatures, the pulp of the fruits of this variety becomes loose and unpleasant.Of course, the taste does not change from this, however, eating the fruits becomes much less pleasant. Nevertheless, the variety is absolutely versatile, and its fruits can be used both for preparing various dishes and for eating raw. However, unfortunately, it is impossible to cook compote from them, since the fruits fall apart right in the jar and turn the drink into an unpleasant mess.
For the rest, it is only worth mentioning that these trees are not very resistant to fungal diseases, and therefore at the beginning of each spring you will have to treat them with special solutions that will prevent possible problems.
Kolkhoz renklode
This variety is a hybrid and was obtained by crossing two equally good varieties of plum: Green Renklode and Thorny Plum. The best regions for growing this plant is the middle zone of Russia or its southern regions, since the variety is adapted to more or less warm weather conditions.
The height of the trees of this variety reaches approximately three meters, and their crown, one might say, is flattened on top. However, it is still quite spherical and heavily thickened with leaves. The amount of the crop, like most plantings, increases over time. At first, it is about twenty kilograms, and as they grow older, the mass of the fruit can reach forty kilograms.
The fruits are distinguished by the fact that almost immediately after ripening they begin to fall to the ground, and therefore harvesting must be carried out on time. The fruits themselves have a greenish-yellow tint, while their flesh is no less green. It has a sweet and sour taste, and it is the sour shade that is dominant in its gustatory range.
The tasting score is estimated by many professionals to be approximately four points. Most of the fruits appear exclusively on the fruits of the current year (their percentage is about ninety percent), and therefore it makes sense to carry out annual pruning with the timely removal of old shoots.
Positive the qualities of the variety are, first of all, the fact that it has tremendous frost resistance. It survives well in temperatures around thirty-five degrees below zero. Nevertheless, the variety still loves heat, and therefore you should not expose it to such temperatures. However, if the tree does freeze, it will be fully restored within two years. You can also note the weakness of the tree to some fungal diseases.
Renclaude Early
This variety, as you might guess from its name, is distinguished by its rather early ripening. It was bred by Ukrainian breeders in the middle of the previous century. Its early maturity is so high that the fruits appear much earlier than all other Renklods.
The fruit feels pretty good when grown in the field area. The trees reach a height of about six meters, and their ripening begins at the very beginning of August, and sometimes, in very good weather conditions, even at the end of July.
Nevertheless, of course, the variety is not without flaws, and therefore it definitely needs pollinators. They can be, for example, Early Donetsk plum or Renklod Karpyshev.
This variety is distinguished by its especially large fruits, the mass of which is rarely less than fifty grams. Their shape, respectively, is almost perfectly spherical. This variety belongs to those in which young trees give larger fruits than old ones, and therefore, over time, the mass of plums decreases up to thirty grams.
The color of the plum skin is pale yellow, but it seems that way, for the most part, due to a very thick grayish waxy coating. Their pulp not only has almost the same color as the fruits themselves, but is also incredibly juicy and aromatic.
In addition, the variety has a fairly high assessment of its taste, which tends to four and a half points. For the most part, this high score was achieved not only due to the taste, but also the incredibly pleasant texture of the fruit.
Speaking about physiological characteristics, it should be noted that the variety is resistant to cold weather. Fruiting is not only incredibly early, but also quite abundant, and besides, it is never interrupted.
However, of course, there are minuses, which can include the fact that it is rather difficult to separate the bone from the pulp. However, if you buy fruits for consumption raw, this is not so important.
Renclode ulena
This variety was bred in the south of France - the homeland of all Renclauds. However, no more detailed data on the origin of this variety have survived to this day. Most likely, this is Renclaude green, which by chance sprouted in the wild and gradually began to adapt to its conditions.
Nevertheless, the variety, perhaps, is a collection, and not at all fruitful value, since in Russia it takes root with difficulty and can be found only among breeders or those who are interested in exotic.
This plant begins to bear fruit in mid-August, and the deadline is the end of the same month. The shape of the plums is perfectly spherical, however, with insufficient mass, they can be elongated. The color of these very fruits varies from yellowish to bright orange.
On the surface of the fruit, you can also find small ruddy pink specks, which only improve the appearance and make the variety look better in the eyes of traders. Fruit weight most often reaches about forty-five grams. For five days after plucking (outside the refrigerator), the fruits are stored without any problems. After that, they begin to lose their qualities.
Of course, the flavor of the variety is also worth considering. Its pulp is incredibly juicy and tender, as well as aromatic.
The variety is also loved for the fact that it easily resists many diseases, in particular fungi and insects. This variety also withstands frosts without visible difficulties. But the separation of the seeds from the pulp can be serious inconvenience.
Renclaude Leah
The last variety in our selection is one of the oldest members of the Renclaud family. Despite the fact that its fruits are rather small and seemingly inconspicuous, it has been cultivated for over a century.
This variety ripens in late August or early September. For the first time, the crop appears on its branches three years after planting. However, such an early period is due to small fruits. The yield is also not excessive: on average, you will collect no more than fifteen kilograms from one tree.
It should also be noted that this recliner requires pollinators, in the role of which Reenclaude Lenya or Skorospelka can act. Plums, as already mentioned, do not reach large sizes. Most often, it is approximately three centimeters, or even less, and the mass does not rise above fifteen grams.
Many white spots can be found on the skin, while the skin itself is yellowish in color. This variety is especially loved by traders, as it can retain its marketable appearance and amazing taste for twenty-five days. At the same time, almost all fruits ripen at the same time.
TO pluses it can also be attributed to the fact that the variety perfectly resists all kinds of diseases. However, the seeds from the fruits are extracted with great difficulty, and it should also be noted that growing the variety in frosty regions is not a good idea.
Also, the tree is not very durable: it lives only for twenty-five years. Recent years have become especially ineffective in terms of harvest, and the tree gradually begins to die.
How to grow Renclode
In order to grow this plant, you will first need to choose the right time, which most often comes in the spring - before bud break. However, in addition to a suitable planting time, you will also need to provide the plant with a good spot.
The criteria by which it should be selected are given below:
- The soil should be loose and fertile, as well as neutral.
- Sunlight should be sufficient.
- The landing site should be located at least at the minimum height. It is important to ensure that there is no groundwater directly under the site.
- It is very important to protect the plant from winds and drafts, as they do a lot of damage to Renklodes.
- There should be no cherry plum or blackthorn next to the plum.
How to plant?
First of all, you, of course, need to dig a planting hole, which should be about sixty centimeters deep and about eighty centimeters wide.
The soil that you dug out of this hole is thrown aside and is also enriched with mineral elements. You should also add a little humus to get a full-fledged soil mixture.
In order for the soil mixture to be good, it is necessary to mix the following ingredients: fertile soil, humus (two buckets), superphosphate (fifty grams), potassium sulfide (thirty grams).
After that, the resulting mixture is poured into the pit, a small additional pit, since it will have to be protected from external influences for some time. Also, cover the soil.
Over the course of two weeks, the pit will be prepared to receive the seedling, and the potting soil will be protected under a film. After these three weeks have passed, it is necessary to start directly with the planting work.
To begin with, you need to stick two strong and long pegs into the hole, which will provide the tree with stability and stability. After that, the seedling is lowered into the hole, and its roots are gently spread along the bottom of the depression. In this case, the root collar should be somewhere six centimeters above the ground level.
When covering the horses with soil, shake it a little, as otherwise air bubbles may form, which can lead to rotting. After all cavities are filled up, the soil should be trampled down.
Now that the seedling sits tightly in the ground, it must be firmly tied to the pegs driven into the ground. When the entire planting is behind and everything is ready, the seedling will need to be watered.
Watering and feeding
As you probably already know, Renklods react extremely negatively to an excess of moisture, and therefore watering must be moderate and constant. For the entire growing season, only five to six waterings should be carried out.
In order to make it easier for the tree to use water, it must be heated and left to stand for several days. If the tree is small, then only three or four buckets are needed, but the larger the tree, the more water will be needed, up to ten buckets.
Also, the watering procedure involves the subsequent loosening of the soil and, possibly, mulching. Also, a couple of times per season, you should take care to remove all excess growth. As for feeding, it begins to be carried out exclusively in the third year, since before that there is no need for it.
Feed tree as follows:
- Even before the flowering of this year begins, the plant is fertilized with ammonium nitrate, potassium salt, as well as complex mineral fertilizers.
- When the flowering itself begins, a urea solution is added, which is diluted in the amount of twenty grams per ten liters of water.
- After the plums are directly ripe, it is necessary to fertilize with urea, which is diluted in the proportion of four tablespoons to twenty liters of water. Also, six tablespoons of nitrophoska should be added to the same solution.
- In June, it is necessary to fertilize with urea (one percent solution) Already in the fall, when digging is carried out, fifteen kilograms of manure, one hundred and fifty grams of superphosphate, fifty grams of ammonium must be introduced into the soil.
- You should also fertilize the soil around the tree with the same superphosphate and sulfuric potassium (in the amount of one hundred and ten grams).
How to properly form the crown of the Renclode plum
Pruning is also a very important procedure for proper growth and efficient development of the plant. It is best to choose spring for this responsible procedure, since it is at this time of the year that the plant will be most prepared for receiving and healing damage.
Also, some experts recommend summer pruning, but whether or not they are carried out is a personal matter. They are carried out in early June, and together with them, pinching of young shoots is carried out in order to maximize their branching.
Pruning also differs depending on how old your plant is:
- In the first year, you will carry out work on the formation of the crown of the correct shape. It should turn out to be spherical. To do this, you will need to select about ten branches that will form the so-called skeleton of the plant. The distance between them should be approximately the same, and the angle at which they should move away from the tree should be forty-five degrees.
- Formative pruning is not carried out in the second year of growth. However, you will need to shorten any increments that have formed since the previous pruning to twenty-five centimeters.
- In the third year of growth, shoots will begin to form very actively from the skeletal branches. Your task is to shorten them. The total length should be approximately thirty centimeters. The rest of the increments that are formed this year are shortened to fifteen.
- In the fourth year, the crown, one might say, will be fully formed. From now on, all you have to do is carry out sanitary pruning, during which you will remove all damaged and too old branches, and also monitor the shape of the crown and not allow it to thicken excessively.
To ensure that the pruning does not bring any further problems, it is necessary to carry it out with the correct tools. To do this, you will need to find the most well-sharpened knife, which must be disinfected before carrying out the procedure. This will not only help prevent infection of the tree, but it will also make the cuts smooth and neat, which in turn will allow the tree to heal its wounds faster.
Also, so that any disease does not penetrate into untreated sections, it is necessary to prepare a sufficient amount of garden varnish, which will prevent viruses and microbes from entering the plant tissues through the holes formed.
Wintering plum Renclode
As you may have noticed, most of the varieties of this plant have an innate cold resistance. Nevertheless, in the realities of our harsh and cold winters, frost protection will not interfere with absolutely anyone, and even such cold-resistant plums.
This is especially true for young seedlings, the root system of which is not as well protected as in adult trees. Well, most of all, you will have to take care of their protection in the event that they were planted in the autumn.
In order to prevent frostbite and the unpleasant consequences associated with it in young seedlings, you will need to wrap their root part of the trunk with agrofibre or film. Mulching with humus can also be very helpful.
As for adult plants, they do not suffer from frost as much as young plants, and therefore, in order to protect them from the cold, an ordinary whitewash will be enough for you.Do not forget that after winter, not only insects wake up, but also rodents, which immediately begin to be active and gnaw absolutely everything that comes their way. Therefore, your trees will definitely not be damaged by the protection of a metal mesh.
However, all this time we talked about those regions where winters are harsh, but still merciful. As you know, in the north of our country, even the most winter-hardy plants face serious problems associated with low temperatures. In such places, you should definitely cover the young plants completely.
Even with adults, it is advisable to carry out such a procedure: all branches are tied up and the crown is wrapped in a special cloth. The barrel, in turn, is also wrapped in an air-tight material, and after that the area around it is mulched.
Pest and disease control
As you may have noticed, reading the descriptions of varieties, the real scourge of all Renklods is all kinds of fungal diseases that annually claim the lives of hundreds and hundreds of trees. In order for your plum not to be taken into account exactly the same, you will have to resort to the use of drugs that it is desirable to use as a prophylaxis for ailments that have not yet appeared.
Among these drugs are: HOM, Bordeaux mixture, and copper sulfate. In order for the treatment to be effective and never allow the infection to penetrate into the trunk, it is carried out as many as three times in one flowering season. This is done in early spring, during the formation of the first buds, as well as immediately after flowering.
Of course, if the plant is still infected with a virus that has passed the drug defense, you will have to increase the number of treatments. However, if you follow these simple rules, even you will not have to resort to such measures at all, since not a single fungus will penetrate your plant:
- First of all, it is necessary not to forget about digging the soil before the onset of absolutely every winter, since all kinds of rodents and insects hibernate under it, which in early spring will weaken the plant and help the virus penetrate it.
- All fallen leaves, if, suddenly, an infection does occur, it will be necessary to dispose of, since it can bring on itself the remains of pathogens, which next year will again begin to eat your plant.
- You should also establish various methods of protection against insects that will not allow them to harm the plant's immunity.
- And, of course, it will not be superfluous to regularly thin out the crown. Nevertheless, fungi are far from the only attack that awaits gardeners who have decided to grow the Renclode plum.
No less dangerous are insects, the topic of which we have already touched a little. However, the time has come to talk about them in more detail.
- Plum moth. This insect, as the name implies, attacks not only rents, but in general absolutely all existing plums and even some other plants. In addition, these moths, oddly enough, eat not only fruits, but also young shoots of the plant, which makes them a much more dangerous enemy. In the event that you find that your tree has been attacked by moths, you will need to use a preparation containing a salt solution. In ten liters of water, you will need to dilute a pound of salt and spray after flowering, since it is at this moment that insects will begin to massively attack the plum. Also, the final spraying will need to be carried out after harvesting the fruits. It will be carried out with a 10% solution of benzophosphate so that the moths do not return next year.
- Plum aphid. Perhaps it is aphids that are the most annoying and ubiquitous insect, which has adapted to eating absolutely all plants, and the plum, obviously, was no exception. The danger of this insect is that it completely sucks the vital juices from the leaves, and due to its incredible multiplicity of aphids leads the tree to a complete breakdown of strength and energy. This naturally leads to the fact that the fruits grow small and lethargic. First of all, in order to overcome aphids, it is necessary to completely get rid of all shoots attacked by aphids. Of course, this applies only to those branches on which there are really a lot of insects. After that, you will need to spray with a solution that will consist of ten liters of water, in which a pound of soap will be diluted. Perhaps, despite the fact that it is the aphid that is the most widespread and numerous insects, it is the easiest way to get rid of it. However, a simple soap solution may sometimes be insufficient, and therefore, if the plant has been attacked by aphids, it should be treated with an insecticide at the end of this season and at the beginning of the next season.
- Plum moth. This insect is extremely unpleasant. It damages fruits slowly and gradually, enveloping them in cobwebs. After a while, this web begins to harm the fruits very much, because of which they rot and burst. The main problem of this insect is that you will most likely be able to notice it only when it has already managed to do a lot of things, and therefore you will have to act quickly. However, the procedure for getting rid of this insect is nothing difficult or extremely difficult. Since the moth does not settle on the plant and turns it into its home, it will be enough just to spray the tree with Chlorophos, and this will discourage it.
- Plum sawfly. In this insect, the larvae pose the main threat, and therefore you will have to fight with them. These small worms, hatching from small eggs, begin to gradually, but surely, eat away the flesh of the ovaries, and therefore all plums that were attacked by these pests fall off without even ripening. In order to prevent the loss of most of the crop, you will need to carry out large-scale insecticide spraying before and after flowering, as well as treat the plum with Metaphos, which will stop the parasites.
We looked at fungal diseases of plums and how to deal with them, as well as ways to kill insects that often attack these trees. However, this plant suffers from a huge number of other diseases. However, we decided to mention only those that are most common.
Among them are the following:
- Moniliosis. This disease is characterized by the fact that the fruits of the plum tree begin to rot very quickly. Its first manifestations can be noticed even at the stage of blooming flowers, and therefore, if you find the appearance of brown spots on them or small traces of rot, you should immediately assume that the plant was attacked precisely by moniliosis. In order to overcome the disease, it is necessary to use a drug such as Horus. Only a three percent solution is made from it. Also, in addition to spraying the tree, the soil should be treated, since it is in it that the disease likes to sit for the next attack.
- Gum therapy. This disease manifests itself in such a way that the bark of the tree becomes very soft. Also, a very unpleasant-looking and touching liquid begins to stand out from it. First of all, in order to cope with the disease, you will have to remove all the liquid that is released from the bark, and you will also have to work a little with a knife, since there is no other way to remove the damaged area. After you carry out this operation, you will also have to treat the entire surface of the wound inflicted on the tree with garden varnish.
Reproduction of Renklods
There are many different ways in which plums can be propagated. All these methods are so diverse that absolutely every gardener can find something to their liking. There are techniques that are ideal for beginners and professionals alike.
Seed propagation
This method is quite laborious and is rarely suitable for beginner gardeners, as it pursues goals that are not characteristic of them. Most often, this method is used to grow rootstocks for other plants.
In order to grow a healthy plum, you must choose an equally healthy and large fruit. After that, you need to rinse it well and remove the bone. After that, the planting material pulled out of the pulp is dipped into water for four days. In this case, it is very important to constantly change the water to a cleaner one, and also sometimes stir the bones so that they do not stagnate.
After these four days, all the seeds are taken out of the water and placed in a glass jar. Be sure to dry them thoroughly before that. In this jar, the bones will be stored until planting. Immediately when this moment comes, the seeds will need to be mixed with moistened sand or sawdust.
The growing temperature should be approximately five degrees. Having stood in this state for six months, the seeds will give seedlings that can be transplanted into open ground.
Graft
This method is great for those who want to propagate the plant quickly, as well as efficiently and effectively. The best time for the procedure will be the growing season of the plant (April or May). Best of all, those vaccinations that were made in the cleavage or directly in the bark take root.
Root growth method
In autumn - before the plant leaves for the winter, it will be necessary to separate the root of the mother plant from the growth (somewhere in the middle). Thus, the shoot itself will begin to develop as an independent plant, and already next spring the shoot can be removed with the developed root system. After that, the seedling should be inspected for any damage.
If everything is fine, then you can plant the shoots in a permanent place. However, if you find any problems (especially with the root), you will need to cut off the affected part and treat the cut with charcoal.
Propagation by cuttings
The scheme of such reproduction is replete with small details and details. Nevertheless, it is quite simple to perform, and therefore it can be suitable for beginners who, nevertheless, have dexterity and at least some skill. First of all, you need to dig out the young roots of an equally young tree. The desired length should be fifteen centimeters, and the width should be approximately one and a half centimeters.
In order to find the most suitable root, you should step back from the base of the tree. About a meter. In the event that the tree is tall - one and a half meters. The time when you dig out the cuttings must be autumn. Until spring, they are stored in specially dug trenches, the depth of which should be approximately equal to half a meter.
For better preservation, it is better to cover the cutting with sand or peat. You can also store the cuttings in the basement by placing them in a container of sawdust. In April, it will be necessary to prepare the soil that will be used for planting the cuttings. This soil should consist of a quarter of peat and three-quarters of sand.
After the soil has been prepared, it will be necessary to plant the cutting at an angle to the ground. In order for it to adapt better, you need to cover it with foil. When planting, the tops of the cuttings need to be slightly deepened (about two centimeters). At the same time, they need to be sprinkled with peat or sawdust. Until the cuttings produce shoots, they will definitely need to be protected from the sun and moisturized.
In the event that one stalk gives several shoots, you will have to give preference to a more tall and strong one. During one season, the plant will need to be fertilized about four times. When winter comes, the shoots will need to be taken to a warm room. By the spring, the trees will grow about a meter in height and will be fully ready for planting. Landing is carried out according to the rules already familiar to you.
Plum Renclode: reviews
Review of an experienced gardener Gennady T.
“When I was choosing what kind of plum to grow, all my friends advised me exactly Renclode. I doubted for a long time, because I knew that there were still many good species and varieties, but I still trusted them. In the end, I didn’t regret it a bit. In the end, my choice fell on Renclaude Early. Despite the fact that the fruits were large and tasty, at first there were quite a few of them, but still the matured tree began to give much more plums.
Most of all, of course, I liked the early flowering and excellent appearance. Plums are sold out like hot cakes - just have time to put them on the counter. Of course, sometimes there are troubles with pests or diseases. But in the end, they all really pay off.
In addition, I cannot say that the plum is so difficult to care for, and therefore for me it turned out to be almost perfect. Although, Renklods also have a minus - they all have a very pronounced sour tint, which I personally do not really like. However, there is no dispute about tastes, so to someone this view will seem the best at all "
Conclusion
It is not for nothing that the Renclode plum is considered not only one of the oldest, but also one of the best varieties of plums. Their amazing physiological characteristics, wonderful taste and unpretentiousness make them the real favorites of absolutely all gardeners.
We hope that in this article we were able to help you in order to figure out how to properly grow this plant, take care of it, and also solved your problem with choosing the right variety. We wish you the best of luck in growing this famous plum and hope you will succeed.
