Sea buckthorn in the garden: description of the plant
Sea buckthorn can be classified as an ornamental shrub belonging to woody plants, which are planted on barren devastated soils or on the banks of rivers. It is a valuable medicinal plant. It is often used in the cosmetics industry. However, in recent years, sea buckthorn has become more and more desirable as an unconventional fruit among gardeners and gardeners.
Choosing a landing site
If you provide sea buckthorn with enough light, then it will become one of the most unpretentious plants. This shrub prefers slightly alkaline, well-permeable soil. Sea buckthorn has a high adaptive capacity, as evidenced by the fact that it grows in both dry and humid habitats. It is long-lived, has high endurance and can withstand exhaust fumes or salty soil.
The difference between males and females
Male sea buckthorn has no fruit. It differs from the female in the presence of small dark brown bumps during flowering. In females, flowers are almost invisible, they are very thin, resembling pistils. Knowing this, you can safely distinguish males from females during flowering, and then, of course, during the ripening of the berries, when the fruits on the females and the bumps on the males are clearly visible.
Botanically speaking, it is a dioecious plant with inconspicuous, unisexual flowers. This means that there are males and females of the plant. The transfer of pollen between them is ensured by the winds. The recommended male-to-female ratio for landing is 1: 5 to 7. Of course, the male or individual females do not breed.
In practice, it is preferable to reproduce sea buckthorn vegetatively. The grafting method by conventional linkage to annual shoots of two-year-old seedlings has also been successful.
Sea buckthorn in the garden: agricultural technology
Sea buckthorn can be grown as a bush or even as a tree. Always remember to have at least one pollinator. The distance to the landing is about 3 meters, on the slope 2 meters. It is better to plant at least two year old seedlings, they take root better. Plants begin to produce berries from the third to the fourth year. Tree species are long-lived, they live up to 80 or even 100 years. Woody plants do not suffer from diseases or pests; sometimes only aphids are found on them.
Sea buckthorn berries are harvested from the second half of August to the end of the first half of September. During this period of time, the plants are still strong. Despite the large number of berries on one branch, the collection of small drupes is rather laborious.
When fresh, the fruit is most often consumed after a honey spill. Honey prevents the fermentation process and does not require preservatives. They are used as a medicine in small, regular daily doses.
