A little bit about chives
Another popular name for chives is speed onions. It has been cultivated for quite some time, since the 16th century. True, at that time in Europe it was used only for medical purposes.
But from the point of view of cooking, it was appreciated later, only at the beginning of the 20th century. From the point of view of prevalence, the wild chives in Russia are found in quite a few places. This plant is very hardy, so the only real enemy of chives is the bitter frost.
Schnitt-onion, as it is not very difficult to guess, belongs to the Onion family and has a great many synonyms (restaurant onion, sogan, chives and others). Initially, the name “chives-bow” takes its roots from the German language and means “the onion that is cut off”.
Chives is a herbaceous plant that can be grown as an annual or a perennial plant.
How to grow chives properly
When choosing a place for planting chives, you must remember that direct sunlight will have a bad effect on the growth and quality of your greenery, so it is better to choose a place with diffused light. It is also necessary to provide your plantings with a neutral level of soil acidity, if necessary, adding wood ash.
In order for the seedlings to germinate, it is imperative to remove all weeds before planting, because the remaining roots of other plants can “strangle” the young chives.
In terms of soil composition, this crop is not very demanding, however, it is better to avoid heavy clay soils and add some sand. This is necessary so that the earth allows air to pass through, and the root system breathes. It will not be superfluous to add humus or compost.
Landings are carried out in grooves spilled with water, as a rule, in rows. If you are planting bulbs, then you must adhere to the 45 X 25cm pattern. If the seeds, then the embedding should be done no deeper than 1 cm.
After the emergence of shoots, the ground around must be loosened to give additional air access. Subsequently (as soon as one true leaf appears), it is necessary to thin out the chives (1 plant per 10cm).
Further care for chives consists in regular watering, loosening the soil and weeding from weeds. When chives grows and turns into a dense wall, it makes sense to plant it. Your chives need to be fed periodically. It is better if it is a natural fertilizer (wood ash, manure, bird droppings). But it is permissible to introduce universal fertilizers for different crops (for example, Nitrofoska).
Do not forget to water the garden with chives, in this regard it is very demanding. We were a little late - and that's it, the greens begin to coarse and dry out.
How to use unusual onions
In addition to excellent taste, this onion has many useful properties. So its use is, one might say, a successful combination of business with pleasure. The plant has a delicate delicate taste that gives a light spice and piquancy to many dishes. It is widely used for making fresh salads, sandwiches, omelets. It can also be used in hot dishes: soups, sauces, side dishes, stews.
Due to its rather decorative appearance, chives are highly prized in the restaurant business. It is perfect for decorating dishes.
