Decorative mountain ash Burka: planting and care
Content:
Since a very long time, any variety of rowan has a very high value in each country for its special qualities. For example, the most popularity was observed among the Scandinavians, the Slavs and Celts also paid great attention to mountain ash. The rowan tree bore not only valuable, useful fruits. It was believed that such a bush should be planted at every home, as it brings happiness to the house, as well as good luck and will certainly protect against the threat of fires. Branches and leaves of rowan were used as an antiseptic. This property is still used in traditional medicine. Another property is that they help the safety of all the fruits in the basement for storage, the water is purified, it becomes drinkable. Rowan fruits are used by folk medicine in decoctions and tinctures, as well as fresh. Today we can single out the variety of mountain ash-Burka, which is very popular for planting in their areas. Rowan Burka has an unusual fruit color. Everyone will not be indifferent at the sight of the bewitching beauty of the bush.
Rowan Burka description and characteristics
This variety belongs to undersized trees, grows no higher than 2.5 meters. An interspecific hybrid, bred by crossing an alpine mountain ash and a forest variety. The varietal peculiarity lies in the unusually beautiful shade of the fruit, purple-brown color. The notes of astringency appear in the distinguished sour taste of the berries.
A very compact crown is formed on the tree, resembling a ball, the leaves are feathery, dissected, painted in a rich green color. Inflorescence clusters consist of five-membered, unusually fragrant small flowers. Active flowering occurs in mid-May-late June. Fruiting begins with mass ripening in early September.
Negative and positive qualities of the variety.
Let's list the most basic qualities that attract the attention of gardeners, traditional healers:
- sufficiently high yield, it is possible to collect up to 50 kilograms of berries from each tree;
- the plant is capable of self-pollination, since the flowers are bisexual, which is a very positive fact;
- mountain ash Burka belongs to varieties with increased frost resistance, can withstand up to -24 degrees of cold;
- rowan fruits are rich in various minerals and vitamins: E, C, P, B2, manganese, phosphorus, iron iodine, a large amount of essential oils and an increased percentage of folic acid. If you consume even a small amount of fruits for a certain period of time, regularly, this will have a very beneficial effect on the general well-being of the body;
- each young seedling is endowed with excellent immunity, easily tolerates any transplant, perfectly adapts to a new place.
If we talk about the cons of the variety, there are practically none. The only moment confuses gardeners - the tree has slow growth But this is not even a minus, so the need for the organism of the bush.
An important point!
The fruits have a rather specific taste. Not everyone will be able to constantly consume them fresh, so it is recommended to cook various jams, preserves, compotes, teas, juices from berries.
Rowan Burka planting and care
Good soil drainage helps the tree feel comfortable in its new location when replanting and thrives on bountiful harvests. Rowan has a positive attitude to a sufficient amount of moisture, but stagnation of water is contraindicated for a tree, therefore, it is not advisable to plant Burka's rowan bushes in swampy places.
Important!
Rowan of this variety prefers a large amount of light, experienced gardeners do not recommend planting in the shade, as shoots will begin to stretch, leaving the lower part of the tree bare, while the number of ovaries decreases.
How to properly prepare the site.
Considering the varietal characteristics, one might say-Burka, the tree is unpretentious in all respects. It can adapt very quickly anywhere after transplanting, almost any soil is suitable for this plant. But there are still preferences. This is a sandy loam and loamy soil composition. One has only to observe the main rule when caring for mountain ash - the obligatory loosening of the soil, it is desirable that the soil was initially loose. This state of the soil allows oxygen to flow to the root system without difficulty. Moisture and nutrients can also easily move through the tree from roots to crown.
As mentioned above, a sunny place has a positive effect on the development of the plant, therefore, decide on the planting site in advance, observe the distance between rowan and other garden crops, at least 5 meters. The planting pit is also prepared earlier, it is possible three weeks before planting. A particularly deep hole is not required, 50 centimeters is enough. You make the width depending on the volume of the roots of the young seedling. Further, the composition of the soil for the pit is being prepared. Combine fertile soil with part of the compost, you can replace it with humus. Not more than 1 bucket in quantity. Be sure to add fertilizers: 150 grams of superphosphate + 300 grams of wood ash. All components are thoroughly mixed, pour into a pit. This volume of soil mixture closes the pit at 1/3 of the depth. Fill the entire remaining volume with any composition, regardless of the state of fertility.
Disembarkation process.
For new plantings, only those shoots are suitable, whose roots have grown to 20 cm. The bark is already quite smooth and elastic in appearance.
Next, we will consider step by step all the stages of transplanting a young rowan seedling.
The pit is already prepared and ready for the transplant process. The soil was sufficiently infused and saturated with all the added ingredients. Pour 1 bucket of water into this soil. All moisture must be absorbed. Place the seedling very carefully in the soil composition. Spread out all the roots, trying not to damage, do not completely deepen the root collar, leave 5-7 centimeters above the soil layer. The rest of the earth is covered with a bush, clap a little, trying to completely fill all the voids that have formed.
To level the soil throughout the entire near-trunk area, there is no need to trample the ground with your feet, it is not even recommended to do this. This action can lead to damage to the fragile root system, and in the future, a crust forms on the surface, which prevents good moisture permeability and oxygen permeability to the roots. The plant will not be able to develop at full strength. After transplanting, it is imperative to water, the amount of water should be sufficient, but not excessive, water stagnation may form on the surface, which again will harm the roots.
It is recommended to immediately mulch the soil around the trunk. You can use plain peat as a substitute for humus.
The main time for transplants is spring or fall. If you plant in the spring, start doing this in March, when the main frosts have already receded, the soil has thawed, the moisture in the soil has entered the standard, but do not miss the moment of sap flow in the plants, you need to be in time before this process. Having chosen the two-autumn option, the tree must be transplanted about 30 days before the first frost appears, it would be optimal to do this at the end of October.
Watering rules.
Rowan Burka does not need constant watering. The first time it is spilled enough when transplanting in the spring. The second stage of hydration must be carried out before the start of the growing season. In the event that there is a prolonged heat, water the tree additionally.When berries ripen, watering must be done half a month before harvesting and 15 days after harvesting. A fruit-bearing tree needs a lot of water, about 3 buckets per bush. Avoid jet watering directly under the root, you can create a small groove around the trunk and water preferably by a shower method.
Of course, Burka's mountain ash loves good food, although it is not picky about it. But, it is customary, all garden crops must be fed for a good harvest and the full development of your plantings. Therefore, we will consider the correctness of the introduction and the composition of the top dressing for the rowan of this variety.
The first stage begins only 3 years after transplanting, very early in the spring. This variety requires the following composition: mix 6-7 kilograms of humus with 5 grams of ammonium nitrate. This amount is calculated for one tree. At the second stage, in early June, use an organic composition: make a solution on the basis of a mullein, you can replace it with a solution of dry bird droppings. Apply such a solution in the amount of 1 bucket under one tree.
The last feeding is done in the autumn, at the very beginning. Superphosphate, 0.5 cups, is mixed with wood ash in the amount of 2 tablespoons.
Rowan pruning.
Already when you reach the age of two, you can start the first pruning. It all depends on the degree of need for this process. What is the function of rowan pruning? According to the rules of agricultural technology, there are three such reasons:
- the formation of a beautiful shape, more neat, the tree itself is rejuvenated, since not only unnecessary branches are cut off, but also old, dried, broken shoots. Regulation of tree growth takes place.
It is necessary to prune the tree strictly before the buds swell. Don't overdo it with pruning. Too frequent a process has a detrimental effect on the tree itself. When cutting off some shoots, others begin active growth, taking a large amount of food to gain strength for growth. The future harvest begins to suffer.
How to prepare for the winter period.
When pruning is carried out in the autumn, it is necessary to remove all thin, immature, undeveloped shoots. In the near future, full-fledged branches begin to develop from each such shoot, and they begin to thicken the crown in an irregular amount, which is not desirable from the point of view of ventilation.
An important fact!
Don't oversaturate the plant with too much fertilizer. From this, the active formation of the green cover of the tree begins. As a result, the amount of the crop is rapidly decreasing.
If it speaks of shelter before the winter period, it is safe to say that the Burka variety perfectly tolerates rather severe frosts, therefore it does not need additional insulation.
Pollination. Collecting berries.
At the very beginning of the article, it was said about the peculiarities of this variety - there is no need to specifically attract insects for pollination, mountain ash is self-pollinated. To achieve the best result, plant several rowan bushes, preferably of different varieties. There are times when a tree cannot pollinate on its own, although this is a very rare occurrence. With this option, cuttings are used, grafting occurs from other trees.
Berry picking can be divided into two stages. It all depends on the region of residence and climatic conditions. The first stage begins at the moment when the berry is full and acquired the required color, the fruit pulp is dense, but moderately tough. In practice, the fruits reach this state by mid-August or early September.
A little later, the fruits taste sweet. You can re-harvest. Fruiting itself continues until the first winter frosts.
Pests and diseases dangerous for mountain ash
The most dangerous pest for mountain ash is a bird. If they do not react in time, they can destroy most of the crop.
When trees are well looked after, they are strong enough to deal with diseases. But a weaker plant is vulnerable and can easily be damaged by the attacks of the apple aphid, mountain ash moth, weevil and scabbard can damage your tree. In this case, it is necessary to resort to special drugs.
The most difficult thing is the fight against the occurrence of necrosis and various types of mosaics. You can prevent the occurrence of such a disease by preventive methods and rules of planting and care.
Be sure to regularly check your crop for insect pests. They are the very first carriers and the cause of the disease of the bush.
Rowan burka reproduction
Rowan variety Burka is preferable to propagate by seed. It consists of the following steps:
- when the berry is fully ripe, remove the seeds from it, completely rinse it from all pulp residues, be sure to dry it;
- before planting, mix the seeds with sand, preferably large, the ratio is 1: 3. Store such a composition at room conditions for at least 2 months, then put it in the refrigerator for 150 days, but not in the freezer.
In the spring, after the snow cover has completely disappeared, the seed is sown in greenhouse conditions in an ordinary wooden one. The most important action until autumn is watering and loosening.
If the variety for planting on your site is chosen of the greatest value, then you can resort to the vegetative method: -grafting, simple shoots, cuttings and layering.
Outcome
Rowan Burka is a good, convenient choice for every gardener, for any conditions. The tree is very unpretentious, no special care is required, only the most basic planting rules, agricultural techniques, and, well, attention to your pets. A well-developed immunity to frost and various diseases (with good care) attracts attention. Simple, timely watering, proper feeding, high-quality pruning. Most importantly, all of the above actions must be performed with pleasure and care for the plantings. The result will be excellent.
