Polyanthus rose
Content:
There is an opinion that roses are quite difficult to care for. For this reason, many gardeners do not want to plant the queen of flowers. However, this opinion does not apply to all varieties of roses, because there are those that do not need too much attention. Polyanthus rose just belongs to one of them, and it will be discussed in this article.
Characteristics of the polyanthus rose
Polyanthus rose brings a fairly large number of flowers, this process lasts throughout the summer. Flowering often takes place partially in autumn, while capturing the first frost. The flowers are beautiful, bright, the shrub is all dotted with them.
Polyanthus rose bushes have a very beautiful decorative appearance. The plant blooms for a long time. It tolerates low temperatures well. There are no thorns on the shoots. Also, the polyanthus rose has a fairly high resistance to major diseases and pests. This culture does not make very high demands on the soil. Feels good in the shade.
Such shrubs are often planted in order to beautifully arrange borders and ridges. Sometimes a polyanthus rose is grown at home in a regular pot or container.
The bush is not too tall, about fifty centimeters high. The plant branches quite strongly. The flowers have a double texture, they are not too large in size, the diameter is about four centimeters. As a rule, the color of the flowers is pink or red. White is not so common. There is no aroma. The flowers are grouped in large inflorescences. One such brush usually contains about fifty flowers.
The foliage of the plants is not large, has a dark green color, the surface is glossy.
Polyanthus rose is rarely attacked by diseases of fungal and infectious origin. However, if the weather is rainy and cool for a long time, then there is a risk that the plants will "pick up" powdery mildew.
How to plant a polyanthus rose correctly
This culture is not too demanding for conditions, however, if you want to admire a large number of flowers on a shrub, you need to follow certain rules for care and planting.
If the soil has too high a level of acidity, it is not scary, the polyanthus rose is not afraid of this. However, it is better to give preference to loose soil with enough nutrients and with a neutral pH level.
Ideally, if you choose an area with a lot of light for planting polyanthus roses. It should also be well ventilated. Partial shade is also acceptable, but be prepared for the branches of the plant to begin to stretch too intensively, and the load on the shoots due to the abundance of flowers will be too great. Be sure to provide props for your plants.
The size of the planting hole strongly depends on how voluminous the root system of the seedling is. The rhizomes must fit easily into the planting pit. Do not fold or bend the roots, but rather dig a larger hole.
Before planting your shrubs, you must add the required amount of humus and sand. In the same mixture, it is necessary to add wood ash (one glass) and fertilizing based on microelements.
In no case should humus contain fungal spores. If a white bloom is found on humus, be sure to dry it thoroughly before use. And only after that such humus can be used.
Fertilizers in the complex, especially for nitrogen-containing dressings, should be added only in accordance with the instructions for use. Too much nitrogen fertilizer will not benefit your plants. It is very convenient to use special ready-made dressings for rose bushes.
If the soil is too heavy (eg clay), sand should be added. Its volume depends on how heavy and dense the soil is. If the soil is already sandy, no additional sand is needed.
If you are replanting a shrub, be careful with the root system. If she was injured, then cut off the stems of the bushes. Observe one golden rule when planting. The above-ground part should be the same size as the underground one.
After your roses are planted, be sure to control the soil moisture level. It should not dry out, but it should not be kept too wet either. In case of a threat of nighttime temperature drop, cover your polyanthus roses.
Proper care of a polyanthus rose
It is not too difficult to care for this culture. Compliance with the irrigation regime is often enough. It is also necessary to carry out regular pruning of shrubs. Sometimes it is necessary to carry out flower treatments against pests and diseases. Before using chemicals, be sure to read the instructions.
This plant can survive the excess moisture in the ground quite well. However, this is almost guaranteed to negatively affect the number of colors. So it is better to water the plants on well-dried soil. Typically, gardeners water every seven days.
You need to trim the bushes more than once. First, pruning is done in early March. At this time, the leaves only appear in the plants. At this time, remove the frozen twigs, as well as old foliage. It is necessary to leave no more than 3 main shoots on each bush. And even they need to be cut by one third. Remove branches that thicken the bush. As a rule, such shoots are directed into the bush.
If you want to achieve a more decorative appearance of your shrub, then carry out formative pruning during the growing season. If you remove the upper part from a young shoot, then new branches will form, directed to the side. In turn, each such branch will form a brush with flowers.
Diseases of the polyanthus rose are rarely exposed. However, in case of prolonged coolness and rains, there is a risk of developing fungal diseases. If it was during this period that you cut the shrubs, then there is a risk that a fungal infection will get into the cut wound. For this reason, choose a fine, not rainy day for pruning.
As for pests, they rarely affect the polyanthus rose. The flowers of this plant do not have any aromatics, so that the shrubs remain practically unnoticed. However, sometimes gardeners are faced with the problem of aphid colonies, which can damage the foliage of roses. To avoid this problem, you need to process your plantings two or three times a season. Before using this or that product, read the instructions carefully.
Reproduction methods of a polyanthus rose
Reproduction of Poiante roses is not difficult. If you take good care of plant cuttings, they almost always take root. Often, gardeners use the seed method for propagation.
Cuttings.
If you have chosen the propagation method by cuttings, then first select strong, healthy shoots with a green color. They should be about fifteen centimeters in size. There should be no fibers during cutting, so use only a sharp knife for cutting. Before planting the plant, it can be left in a solution with a growth stimulant for a while.
The seedlings must be placed in a container. They should have prepared soil for planting. It should be moderately moist. To prevent the water from evaporating too quickly, cover the cuttings with plastic. For germination to be successful, experienced gardeners use soils based on sawdust, sand, coconut fibers, perlite, peat.
Each of these components has its own pros and cons. For example, peat substrate is perfectly moisturized, but dries too quickly. Therefore, you need to closely monitor the level of moisture in the soil. While the plants are weak, even a short-term drought can harm them. There may also be fungal spores in the peat substrate.
For growing polinta rose using cuttings, a substrate based on coconut fibers is excellent. It will almost never let your cuttings get sick with rot and mold.
As far as perlite is concerned, it has a very important property. It perfectly absorbs moisture and provides it to the cuttings when needed. In this way, the humidity level is maintained in the correct way. When using perlite, there is no risk of contamination of your cuttings. However, if you are growing your rose with perlite, then be prepared to do additional fertilization. Top dressing must be highly soluble in water.
A few words about sawdust. Before germinating cuttings, you need to treat your substrate with fungicides. Also, be careful with the uniformity of soil moisture.
Sand does not show itself in the best way, since here you can easily overdo it with moisture. The sand is pressed too well, and therefore the rhizomes will lack oxygen. Anneal the sand before use, so you get rid of unnecessary microorganisms.
After the first roots have emerged, you need to transplant your plants. In the future, your plants will need bright light, as well as a fairly large amount of fertilizer.
Many gardeners grow seedlings in "shkolki", in temporary beds. The most important thing in these conditions is the absence of direct sunlight, and the soil should not be allowed to dry out.
After planting, it is recommended to lay the mulch and also cover it with a transparent material. It is better to use for this not polyethylene (the plants may become too hot under it), but agrofibre. After a year, your seedlings are ready to be planted in their permanent habitat.
Growing from seeds.
If you decide to propagate a rose by seed, then be prepared for the fact that not all of your young plants will take over the properties of the mother plant.
Most of the seeds of such a crop need to be started. This does not apply unless the roses with the romantic name "Angel Wings". The seeds of such a rose germinate well, and flowering begins after three to four months.
Before planting, the seeds must be disinfected and dried. After that, they need to be soaked in a growth stimulator. The seeds are sown in clean soil. Then they need to be wrapped in cellophane and put away in the cold for a couple of months. In order for seed growth to be activated, they need sub-zero temperatures. For this reason, experienced gardeners add containers in drops. If you are growing plants at home, place the containers in the freezer.
In the spring, the containers need to be removed and transferred to heat. In this case, the place should be bright. After two to three weeks, your plants should hatch. After that, the polyethylene must be removed. For the first three days, spray your seedlings two to three times a day. When there is no risk that frosts will return, seedlings can be planted in their permanent habitat.
If you follow all the rules for planting and caring for a polyanthus rose, then you will receive a wonderful decorative addition to your site in the form of elegant flowers.
