Rocambol: description and properties
Rocambol is a character in French novels, which the French fell in love with so much that they began to call everything incredible and surprising "rockambol".
The rockambol vegetable culture is no exception. First, you will be surprised by its size, and then by the incredible taste. Outwardly, Rocambolle looks like a head of garlic only 3-4 times larger, but it tastes like onion and garlic. At the same time, Rocambol is devoid of the bitterness and pungency characteristic of these cultures.
Perhaps rocumball is known to you by other names: Egyptian or Spanish onions, elephant garlic, hair onions.
Onion-garlic Rocambol contains ascorbic, pantothenic and folic acid, riboflavin, thiamine, vitamins K, E, as well as minerals such as calcium, manganese, iron and magnesium, which are necessary for the body.
The inclusion of rockamboll in the diet is also the prevention of viral diseases, since garlic is rich in phytoncides. And it is not difficult to diversify the diet with this culture, since the leaves of the rockumbol are edible too.
The stalk of the rockumbol looks like a leek. The diameter of the scallop head can reach 10 cm, weight - up to 300 grams.
In addition, this vegetable crop can also be used for decorative purposes. The rocambolle garlic onion gives an arrow with a fairly large spherical inflorescence, consisting of many small bells of a beautiful purple color.
Propagation of rockumball
Despite the fact that Rocumball is a flowering plant, its inflorescences do not form seeds.
The most common way of propagation of garlic, familiar to everyone, is by chives from adult bulbs.
The plant is also propagated with the help of children appearing at the bottom of the bulb, outwardly similar to small halves of onions. Perhaps, this is where one of the names of the culture appeared - hairstyle.
It should be remembered that the longer the ripe bulb stays in the ground, the more likely it is that the children will fall off and we will lose part of the planting material. Therefore, you should not delay the cleaning of the rockumbol.
Children will become a full-fledged onion with several teeth only in the second year.
Rockumball landing
You can plant rockambol both in spring and autumn. Autumn plantings of rockumball are best done in early October. Before planting, we disinfect the teeth, keeping for several hours, first in a manganese solution, and then in an ash solution.
The area where you plan to plant the rocumball garlic should be well lit and warm. It is important that the soil is loose, the soil is fertile. It is optimal if cabbage, cucumbers, peas, and zucchini were previously grown on the selected site.
We plant the teeth to a depth of 10-15 cm, the distance between the holes is at least 20 cm. Thickened plantings are fraught with a lack of nutrition. The result is poor bulb development and unjustified expectations.
Planting rockamboll onions must be mulched to preserve the plants in winter.
The agrotechnology of the spring planting of rockambol is the same as in the fall.
Plant care and feeding
Caring for a rockball is not difficult at all. At the initial stage of the growing season, regular watering is important, in the amount of at least 10 liters per 1 sq. M. Further planting is watered as needed.
Rocambol, like many other crops, is responsive to loosening the soil and weeding, which, as you know, draw out useful elements and moisture from the soil, which affects the development of the plant.
For good crop growth, top dressing is necessary, especially if the soil in the area with rockambol plantings is poorly fertilized.
The first top dressing, about two weeks after the emergence of sprouts above the surface of the bed, is carried out with nitrogen-containing fertilizers. In the future, phosphorus-potassium fertilizers are applied.
To feed the rockambol, you can also use ready-made complex fertilizers for onions and garlic.
Pay attention to the green mass of the plant, which will be weak and pale with insufficient fertilization.
Rocambol - not to be confused with Suvorov's bow
There is some confusion when Suvorov's bow is mistaken for rockambol. In fact, these are two completely different plants.
Rocambol looks like a large garlic with chives, and Suvorov's onions are large flat-rounded onions.
In addition, the Suvorov onion does not have a stem as such, the leaves are arranged in the form of a rosette.
It should be noted that the children of Rockumball, which appear in the first year, like Suvorov's bow, have a flat-rounded shape. Perhaps because of this, there is a wayfarer. However, already in the second year, a full-fledged garlic with chives grows from the baby.
Thus, when acquiring planting material, you need to remember that Rocumball is propagated either by children or by cloves, the size of which is slightly larger than that of ordinary garlic.
