Rice corn and its features
Not everyone knows what rice corn is. Let's introduce you to her a little. This crop is very fond of warmth, but it is also resistant to lower temperatures, unlike corn.
Unlike grain corn, rice corn grows smaller on average by one and a half or even two times. The corn stalk does not grow tall, the maximum grows up to one and a half meters in height.
One stem grows from two to four cobs of rice corn, the size of the cobs is from ten centimeters or more. The kernels from the cobs of this crop are similar to rice, their color is different, it depends on the type of corn, usually the color goes from white through red-brown to black.
Rice corn has a very strong root system, the roots are highly branching and penetrate into the depths of the earth up to three meters. It can also develop aerial roots that prevent other plants from lodging.
Rice maize is pollinated by the wind. Pollination of corn can be prevented by rainy weather or drought, which can lead to the formation of overgrains.
Rice corn is a thermophilic plant, so if you plant seeds in the ground that has not yet warmed up in early spring, in most cases they will not sprout. Seeds will begin to sprout when the ground temperature reaches at least ten degrees.
The best temperature for the growth and development of rice corn is considered to be up to thirty degrees Celsius. If the temperature drops below ten degrees, then it stops rising.
Rice corn is planted on fertile soil, where a large amount of sunlight falls. It grows very quickly, and a lot of green matter appears on it. Corn needs to be fertilized and fed. She especially needs fertilizing and fertilization when it begins to bloom and when the first ears appear.
If something is lacking in rice corn, then you can notice it by its appearance. If the leaves turn yellow and the tips begin to dry out and turn brown, this means that it does not have enough nitrogen. If there is not enough phosphorus, then the leaves turn red, but if brown spots began to appear on the leaves of corn, this means that it has a lack of potassium.
In the initial phase, rice corn has a long growing season and slow growth, so many people advise growing it using seedlings. Initially soaked grains must be sown in two pieces in milk bags, fill the bags with a mixture of soil and peat.
Rice corn is usually sown in spring, the period falls in late March or early April.
The filled bags are put in a warm place at home for a week. After the shoots have just begun to appear, they must be rearranged on the windowsill. It is also necessary to look after the seedlings, water them on time and loosen the soil on which they grow.
In order to gradually accustom rice corn seedlings to warmth, it is necessary to take them outside on sunny days. In mid-May, it will be possible to plant seedlings in open ground, where they will grow until fruit is obtained.
They put it in holes, which are dug out in advance, then they are filled with compost, usually half a bucket per hole, and another tablespoon of superphosphate is added and then it is necessary to water the rice corn with a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
If you sow the grains themselves directly on the soil, then you need to do this in early May. Sprouted seeds are planted immediately, before that, keeping them in wet gauze at a temperature of up to 24 degrees.
When planting, put two seeds in the nest, keep the distance between the nests within forty centimeters, and the distance between the rows should be about half a meter. After sowing the seeds, cover them with plastic wrap, pressing down with anything around the edges.
After the shoots begin to appear, you need to constantly water them, remove unnecessary weeds, loosen and feed them.
The cobs are harvested during the period of full biological maturity of the grains. Remember that grains that are not ripe in the next heat treatments will not explode.
As soon as the grains of rice corn are ripe, this can be seen by the condition of the cobs, which means it is necessary to harvest. The flower stigmas begin to dry out and turn dark brown. The leaves themselves in which the cob turns around becomes yellow, but the grains are painted in a color that belongs to one or another variety.
To make popcorn at home, all you need is a very thick skillet. Next, you need to heat the pan strongly by adding vegetable oil to it and then put the corn kernels in one layer and close the pan lid and heat on the fire.
When heated, the grains of rice corn begin to crack and increase in size, as soon as most of the grains open so you can remove the popcorn from the pan.
And then it's a matter of taste for everyone, someone salt rice corn, but someone eats them with condensed milk.
