Repairing blackberry
Content:
In our country, blackberries are still not very common in summer cottages. However, already experienced gardeners are actively planting this culture in their gardens. The berry of this plant has a refined taste and delicate aroma, and also contains a lot of useful substances and elements. About ten years ago, hybrid varieties of blackberries were bred, which have remontant properties. Repaired Blackberries produce berries twice in one season. Thanks to the efforts of breeders, remontant blackberry varieties were developed that can tolerate low temperatures well. They can be successfully grown even in the middle zone of the Russian Federation.
Repaired blackberry: description
Repaired blackberries were obtained by breeders relatively recently. For this reason, growing it is not so popular among gardeners and summer residents. However, on sale such plants can be found more and more often, and the demand, although not too intensively, is growing. It may seem that this type of blackberry has practically no differences from ordinary varieties. However, it is not. If you plant a remontant blackberry on your site, then you will be able to harvest twice in one season. This property is not typical for the common blackberry. Moreover, double fruiting of remontant blackberries is also relevant for the middle zone of our country. The first harvest ripens on the fifteenth of June. As for the second wave of berries, it usually occurs at the end of September.
If you harvest once a season, then the fruiting period will stretch and will last from August to October. If you left the stems from last year, then the first fruiting will occur on them. The second wave falls on the shoots of the current year.
As a rule, the productivity of remontant blackberry varieties is at a high level, and it turns out to harvest a lot of berries. The varieties that are intended for cultivation in the middle lane are very convenient in terms of caring for them. Before winter comes, as a rule, all stems need to be cut off, leaving only a few centimeters above the ground. This will protect your plants from freezing, at least the above-ground part of them. It is believed that the stems are the most delicate part of the remontant blackberry. Most often, it is they who are damaged by low temperatures. In addition, shoots can suffer from various rodents. Even a large number of thorns does not stop these animals.
The climatic conditions in our country are capable of surprising from year to year, therefore frosts even in spring time take place. However, for remontant blackberries, recurrent temperature drops are not terrible in the central part of the Russian Federation. In addition to this indisputable plus, it is worth noting that the first harvest can be obtained in the same year that the planting was carried out. As a rule, this time falls in August.
Those shoots that have grown during the summer are usually cut off before hibernation. After that, the root system is insulated with a non-woven material. For the same purpose, you can use a mulching layer, which will be ten to fifteen centimeters thick. With such a radical pruning, the berries will need to be picked exclusively on the stems of the current year. Ripening is usually gradual. It begins in early August and continues until the onset of frost. If you follow the basic rules for growing, then there is a chance to harvest twice a season. If there is a desire to remove a double harvest of berries, then at the end of autumn the shoots that grew in the summer are bent to the soil. After that, the covering material is laid in two to three layers. White spandex or lutrasil is good for these purposes.
If you grow the remontant blackberry in this way, then, starting from June, berries will begin to form on the stems of the last season, which were "sent" for wintering. And from mid-July it will be possible to pick berries from the shoots of this season.
When growing remontant blackberries, a minimum of actions are taken to combat various diseases and harmful insects. Fungal spores, as well as eggs with larvae, prefer to winter in the tree layer. With such a radical pruning of the stems before the winter period, the pests simply do not have the conditions for overwintering. Thus, the occurrence of pests and diseases is minimized, and the use of prophylactic chemicals is no longer relevant. This property of the remontant blackberry makes it possible to get absolutely pure berries on the table, not processed by any chemistry.
All remontant blackberry varieties bloom almost the entire season. The flowers are quite large, painted white. The aroma is bright and very pleasant. The diameter of a single flower can vary from six to nine millimeters. There are cases, and they are not so rare, that the plant stops blooming with the onset of the first low temperatures. When the blackberries are in bloom, these bushes make a wonderful garden decoration. In addition, blackberry flowers are very attractive to insects, which act as pollinators.
Separately, it is worth noting the dimensions of the remontant blackberry bush. Unlike ordinary blackberries, such varieties do not grow so intensively over the site. The stems of such blackberries grow in a vertical direction. In their height, they reach a maximum of two meters. It becomes easier to care for such plants, as well as to pick berries.
In addition to ease of care and harvesting, the advantages of the compact dimensions of the bushes of remontant blackberry varieties include the possibility of placing such blackberries in planting containers. That is, it is not necessary to plant the remontant blackberry directly on the site, but you can plant it in voluminous pots, large tubs. When cold temperatures hit, plants can be moved to a warm veranda. A greenhouse with a heating system is also suitable. Thus, the berries can be harvested for a longer period.
The repaired blackberry gives off quite a few berries even in the year when the planting was carried out. Of course, the remontant blackberry has more than only advantages. Let's list the main disadvantages of the remontant blackberry.
- It is systematically necessary to water the blackberries. Such blackberries are very sensitive even to short droughts. In no case should the soil remain dry, despite the fact that the root system of this culture sinks deeper than that of raspberry bushes. You can achieve good productivity if you constantly monitor the level of soil moisture and prevent it from drying out. At the same time, moisture should not stagnate in the ground, this can lead to decay of the root system.
- Another disadvantage of growing remontant blackberries is the necessary presence of support structures. The fact is that this blackberry gives a large number of fruits, and the stems of the current year are not too strong and powerful. Due to the gravity of the berries, the shoots begin to lean towards the soil, thereby the berries become dirty or begin to rot. The presence of a support structure helps to solve this problem.
- Repaired blackberries have a fairly large number of thorns. This makes harvesting difficult. This difficulty can be solved quite simply - by wearing thick rubberized gloves. By the way, breeders have already developed some varieties of such blackberries, which do not have sharp thorns.
- Difficulties may arise with the separation of the blackberry from the receptacle. It must be admitted that this problem applies not only to remontant varieties, but also to common varieties. In addition, we can say that this property can be considered as an advantage. Thanks to this, the berries do not fall off ahead of time and are on the shoots even when they are in a state of full ripeness.
If it is not possible to systematically water the blackberry plantings, then a mulching layer can be laid in the near-trunk circles. For these purposes, humus, dry grass, sawdust, and crushed peat are well suited. So you will not only protect the plants from rapid evaporation of the liquid, but also save yourself from the constant weeding of the area.
Repaired blackberries are demanding on the presence of a supporting structure. Before planting this crop in your area, you need to think carefully about the planting site. On the territory of our country, such plants are not yet very popular, but nevertheless, there are already some recommendations from experienced farmers. Given the peculiarities of the climate, it often makes sense to remove not two, but one, but a bountiful harvest from the bushes of the remontant blackberry. Two harvest waves are relevant, as a rule, for the southern part of Russia, where the climate is characterized by a large number of warm days and light. As for the cultivation of such blackberries in other regions, usually in the autumn period the fruits do not have time to fully ripen. This is due to the fact that at this time there is too little sunlight, which gives the plants warmth and light.
An early harvest of remontant blackberries, which usually ripens in June, cannot be harvested. But the second harvest will temporarily be postponed to the second half of August. If you do not live in the southern part of Russia, and still want to get a double blackberry harvest, then it makes sense to grow this crop in greenhouse conditions.
When growing blackberries in one crop wave, all the stems must be cut before the winter period. In the next season, you will pick a large number of berries on the young stems of the current season.
In terms of taste, the autumn berry harvest is no different from the summer one, except that they may not ripen due to the onset of the first low temperatures in autumn.
Repaired blackberries: growing
For the repairing blackberry, the presence of heat is quite important. If it is not enough, then the productivity of the plant, as well as the taste of the fruit, will leave much to be desired. At the same time, placing blackberry bushes on an area that is illuminated by directly falling rays of the sun is also not worth it. A slightly shaded place is best for this culture. This plant is quite demanding on heat, but the direct rays of the sun are destructive for it. If you plant not one, but several plants on your site, then you need to keep the distance between them, which should be seventy to eighty centimeters. In this case, the row spacing should be twice as large. This will make it much easier for you to install the support structure. To do this, pegs need to be driven between the plants. Then a thin wire or rope is attached to them. This is done in several rows, which are arranged in a parallel manner relative to the ground. The height should be forty, eighty and one hundred twenty centimeters. Blackberry stems need to be tied to these stretch marks. With this method of growing on trellises, the plant will receive more sunlight. At the same time, the fruits will receive more heat and ripen more actively. It is necessary to think about the installation of a trellis support in advance. The fact is that when installing a support structure between already planted plants, damage to the root system can be caused.
Most remontant blackberry varieties are self-fertile, so pollinating insects are not required for high productivity. But if the plants are cross-pollinated, then this still has a good effect on the quantity and quality of blackberry fruits. For this reason, it makes sense to plant another one in the neighborhood - two bushes, preferably of other varieties. It is best to place blackberry plantings on a gentle slope, which will be reliably protected from gusty winds and drafts. It is best to plant blackberries in the last days of April or in the first half of May. The planting hole is prepared in advance, thirty days before the planting of the bushes. You don't need to dig a hole to a great depth, fifty-five to sixty centimeters will be enough. It should be the same size in diameter. As for the soil for blackberry bushes, a loose soil containing not a very large amount of nutrients is best suited. Loam or sandy loam is good. Rhizomes in this culture develop more actively than in raspberries. For this reason, the planting hole should be slightly deeper than the raspberry bushes. Soil with a high level of alkali is not suitable for blackberries. Repaired blackberries are susceptible to diseases such as chlorosis of leaf plates. For this reason, before planting plants on a site, it is necessary to clarify in advance what level of acidity on a given land. Best of all, blackberries will feel on the ground with an indicator of 6 - 6.5 units. To bring the level of acidity and alkalinity to a balanced indicator, you can use pine needles.
As for feeding the remontant blackberry, organic fertilizers are best suited. When planting, you need to mix the sod layer, which was removed from the hole with humus (twenty-five to forty liters), as well as with wood ash (one liter). Instead of humus, you can use compost, which has been thoroughly peeled before that. The prepared nutrient mixture must be placed in a pit and covered with material that will not allow moisture to pass through. Ash of wood species contains such important elements as phosphorus and potassium. It makes sense to buy planting material exclusively at trusted retail outlets, be it a garden store or nursery. If you buy a seedling at an agricultural exhibition or from a private owner, then it is not a fact that the variety that the seller tells you about will be bought. In addition, it is not a fact that the purchased bush will be remontant. It is best to choose plants in which the rhizomes are closed, that is, they have an earthen lump. Such plants survive planting easier and more painlessly.
When buying seedlings, it is best to give preference to annual and biennial plants. Repaired blackberries should include one, several shoots, which will reach about fifty centimeters in height. The thickness of the stems should vary from four to six millimeters. It is imperative that at least one well-developed growth bud is present, as well as a healthy root system. When choosing plants for planting, you need to carefully study the rhizome, as well as the bark of the blackberry.
To plant a blackberry bush correctly, you need to follow a certain algorithm of actions. With an open root system of seedlings, you need to immerse the roots in water for about a day. The water should be about twenty degrees. You can also use a solution made on the basis of a root growth stimulant. For this purpose, many gardeners use potassium humate, Epin or Heteroauxin. To get rid of possible infections and unnecessary bacteria, you can also use a small amount of a special drug called potassium permanganate. Before planting the plant, you need to thoroughly water the soil in the hole. The liquid must saturate the ground. After that, a mound of soil is made in the central part of the planting hole, a plant is installed on it. The root system must be straightened, the roots must be directed downward and in different directions. You need to add soil to the planting hole little by little. Each layer must be carefully compacted, starting from the outermost part of the hole and moving towards the central one.
It is advisable to deepen the buds that are located on the roots by about three to four centimeters. Ultimately, the landing hole will not be deep at all and will only reach two to three centimeters. After the water has completely saturated the ground, you need to lay a mulch layer. It is located in the area of the trunk circle, which is about thirty to forty centimeters in diameter. To do this, you can use humus, grass or crushed peat. All stems of the seedling must be cut to half the length. The stems should remain about twenty-five to thirty centimeters above ground level. For some time (seven to ten days), it will not be superfluous to cover young plants with a special light-colored material. So the seedlings will be protected from the aggressive sun during the most difficult rooting period for them. Once the plants have been planted, it is important not to overflow. The soil should be slightly moist. It is good to grow this crop after beets, cereals, cabbage, radishes, as well as after carrots and herbs. After the nightshade family, blackberries are unlikely to do well. The same goes for the predecessors, which are berry shrubs.
Blackberry care
It is not so easy to care for the remontant blackberry. Therefore, repairing blackberries are not planted by every gardener. At the same time, unlike ordinary blackberries, remontant blackberry varieties have their advantages, which make caring for such plants easier. This is especially true of the pre-winter period, when the plants are preparing for it. Repaired blackberry varieties show stable productivity. This becomes the reason for the rather rapid and active depletion of the soil. In connection with this feature, nutrients must be systematically introduced.
At the beginning of the spring, after the snow cover disappears, the soil needs to be loosened. In this case, you need to add a solution prepared on the basis of humus or well-rotted manure. One bush accounts for ten to fifteen liters of top dressing. In addition, it is necessary to make dry dressing, which will contain a large amount of nitrogen. For one bush of such feeding, about fifteen to twenty grams are spent. Thanks to nitrogen, the aerial part of the plant is more actively formed, in particular, this applies to the leaves. It is impossible to overdo it with such feeding, since too much nitrogen can lower the level of immunity. This can cause a disease such as gray rot. In addition, an excess amount of nitrogen will help form a lush crown of a bush, but the plant does not have enough energy to form berries.
Many experienced growers use Urea to replenish the nitrogen content in the soil. Such fertilizer and others like it are applied exclusively in the spring. To set berries, the plant needs a certain amount of potassium. Potash dressings are added after the plants have finished flowering. Such dressings are used both dry and liquid. To prepare a solution in ten liters of water, you need to dilute thirty to thirty-five grams of top dressing. It should be noted that blackberry bushes react extremely negatively to the presence of chlorine in fertilizers. For this reason, potassium chloride should not be used for feeding. You can use dried manure for your blackberry mulch. In this way, you do not have to add additional phosphorus-containing fertilizers. If you do not use such a layer of mulch, then once every three years you need to add superphosphate. One plant consumes about forty - fifty grams. This top dressing is usually applied together with potash fertilizers. If superphosphate is not at hand, then wood ash can be used for the same purpose. It is used every year at the same time as superphosphate. Dried manure can also be a good feeding with a large amount of phosphorus. In addition to the above elements, blackberries require iron and magnesium for normal growth and development. Therefore, you need to make such fertilizers. During the summer period, it will not be superfluous to process the plants on the leaf. For this, you can use a solution of potassium and magnesia. In addition, the soil near the bush is also treated with ferrous sulfate solution. Such procedures are carried out two to three times a summer.
An important step in caring for remontant blackberry varieties is the timely watering of the plants. Water the plants in a timely manner and in moderation. If moisture is supplied to the bushes in too much, then the fruits lose their taste, they become expressionless. In this case, an excess of water leads to the fact that the root system of the bushes begins to rot. At the same time, drying out of the earthen coma is also undesirable. If there is not enough water, then blackberries will grow and develop slowly, and the berries will be dry and without sweetness. In order for the soil near the plants to be always slightly moist, and the water does not evaporate from the soil so quickly, you need to lay a mulching layer. This is done after the next watering has been carried out. Mulch is laid after the liquid is completely absorbed. The thickness of such a layer should be at least five to six centimeters. Summer residents with rich experience in growing berry crops are advised to plant around the circumference of each blackberry bush of culture, which act as siderates. They are planted at a distance of about eighty to one hundred centimeters from the bush. You can also place green manure plants between the rows. Moreover, such plantings can be carried out repeatedly throughout the season. When the need arises, the green manure is cut off, and the aboveground part is used as a mulching layer.
In addition to the above advantages of mulch, such a layer is also a good and completely environmentally friendly fertilizer. Watering the blackberry is quite abundant. The ground should be wet about fifty to sixty centimeters deep. The most convenient way to do this is to use the sprinkling method. You can also use a drip irrigation system, so the water consumption will be less.
If there are not very many warm days in the summer, then watering is carried out once every seven days. If the weather is hot without precipitation, then you need to water the plants every three to four days. If there is a lack of moisture in the soil, then you need to correct this situation as soon as possible.
As for the preparation of remontant blackberry varieties for the winter period, everything is quite simple here. Stems that are located above the ground, all without exception, need to be cut at the level of the ground surface. At the same time, the zone of the near-trunk circle should be cleared of weed and plant residues. After that, you need to lay a mulching layer ten to twelve centimeters thick.
Pruning blackberries is also not too difficult. It is worth making sure that the tool used is sharp. In addition, it must be disinfected before use.
In case you decide to leave the stems of the current year for the next season, then they need to be freed from the support structure. After that, the shoots must be tied up and bent to the surface of the soil as close as possible. If on any shoots you find symptoms of some diseases or traces of pests, then such shoots must be cut to the level of the growing point. The cut off part must be burned away from the plantings. After that, the plants are insulated. For this, almost any covering material that will allow oxygen to pass through is suitable. It is best to cover the blackberry with several layers. When the snow cover forms, then you need to cover the bushes with a half-meter layer of snow. After a while, the snowdrift will decrease. For this reason, this procedure must be repeated two to three times during the winter. The tough icy crust must break. As many gardeners note, problems with the heating of bushes, as a rule, do not arise. It is necessary to bend the stems in the autumn. In doing so, care must be taken not to damage the stems.
Blackberries of any variety, as a rule, cannot retain their qualities for a long time. In a normal room, harvested blackberries can be stored for about three to four days. In the refrigerator, at temperatures from zero to two degrees, the berries will lie for a maximum of three weeks. In this case, the humidity should be approximately eighty - ninety percent. For this reason, it is recommended to eat fresh remontant blackberries. Berries are often used in canning, as well as in the preparation of dessert dishes.
Repaired blackberry seedlings
Blackberry bushes, in particular the remontant varieties, are not so difficult to propagate. Young plants can take root very well in a new habitat. It is worth noting that if the blackberry is propagated with the seed method, then the properties of the variety from the mother plant will also be transferred to the young plant.
Many experienced gardeners prefer to propagate remontant blackberries using cuttings. This method is considered the easiest among the rest. As a layering, you can take it as part of a stem, or a whole shoot is suitable. If you chose this option for breeding blackberries, then bend the branch as close to the surface of the ground as possible, after which it must be securely fixed. To do this, you can use a wooden or metal hairpin. Then the bent branch must be covered with pre-fertilized soil. Further care without fail involves a fairly abundant and systematic watering. If there is no shortage of liquid, then in a fairly short period the root system will form, as well as young stems.
With the onset of the autumn period, with proper care, it will most likely be possible to disconnect the finished seedlings from the main bush and move them to the main habitat. If you use top cuttings for propagation of remontant blackberries, then you will receive only one bush. However, it is worth noting that it will be sturdy and well developed.
Some gardeners prefer to propagate remontant blackberries using horizontal cuttings. With this method, the stem must be completely positioned in a pre-formed not too deep trench. Its depth should be five to six centimeters. After that, the stem is covered with soil. This method will give you more than one seedling, but at the same time the resulting plants will not form as strong. But using this method, you can dig out not one bush for transplanting at a time, but a fairly decent amount of planting material. This method is often used by summer residents who sell blackberries or seedlings.
A slightly more difficult option for propagating remontant blackberries is cuttings. To do this, you need to choose a plant in adulthood. After which the bush is dug up along with the root system. The roots must be carefully cleaned of soil. When choosing planting material, it is worth giving preference to half-meter roots, which in their thickness reach at least half a centimeter. Each such root must be divided into segments, which in their length will be about ten to fifteen centimeters each. Such segments are called cuttings. In this case, the thickness of each cutting should be at least half a centimeter. Depending on the climatic conditions of a particular region, the period for planting may differ. As a rule, this time falls on the last days of August - the first ten days of September. If there is a risk of sudden low temperatures, it is better to shift this procedure to the spring. In order to plant the cuttings, you need to prepare the grooves in advance, which will be about ten to thirteen centimeters deep. For one second, they need to be filled with natural fertilizer, humus is good for this. Before planting, it is recommended to keep the cuttings in a growth stimulator for several hours. To do this, you need to prepare a solution with the correct proportions, according to the attached instructions. After that, the cuttings must be laid out in the horizontal direction in the trenches made. After that, you need to sprinkle with well-fertilized soil. Then you need to shed the placed cuttings. The amount of water should be moderate. After watering, the soil must be carefully tamped.
As a rule, the first berries of the remontant blackberry can be obtained the next season after the cuttings have been planted in the soil. Cuttings can be used as cuttings of the stems. They need to be planted in separate pots that will contain perlite. Vermiculite is also suitable for these purposes. After planting, cover with glass or plastic. This is necessary in order for the air humidity to be at least ninety - ninety-five percent. After about thirty days, the root system begins to form, and after that the cuttings can be moved to their permanent habitat. If you choose stem cuttings as cuttings, then they can be placed in water. So they will form roots pretty quickly.
Growing remontant blackberries using seeds is a rather laborious process, but there is also an interesting property that is inherent in blackberry bushes. The fact is that most of the berry bushes, when propagated in this way, do not always retain the characteristics of the parent bush variety. As for the remontant varieties of blackberries, the situation is different here. However, this breeding method is not very popular with summer residents. The problem usually lies in the germination of the seed. For a percentage of the likelihood that your seeds will sprout, you need to carry out some procedures before sowing. It is necessary to carry out scarification, that is, to cause mechanical damage to the seed coat. A sharp blade can be used for this. In addition to this training, stratification can be carried out. This means that the seed material is kept in the refrigerator for seven to ten days. Repaired varieties are planted by seed in the last days of the winter period or in the first days of March. For this purpose, you need to use small boxes. Their filling includes peat crushed into crumbs, rather coarse sand. These ingredients are mixed in equal amounts. Before sowing, the soil must be moistened with a spray bottle and leveled. Blackberry seeds are immersed in the ground for a maximum of six to seven centimeters. After a couple of months, two true leaves should form. After that, the seedlings are dived, that is, the seedlings are transplanted into separate pots, which are filled in front of this with soil intended for seedlings.
If the climatic conditions of your region can allow, then there is an opportunity to plant the bushes directly directly into the open ground. Otherwise, you will need to arrange a transplant again in early June. The first berries of plants, which were propagated by the seed method, appear, as a rule, after three to four years. In many ways, this is also the reason that this method of breeding blackberries is not popular among gardeners.
There is another way of propagation of blackberry plants - this is with the help of root buds. As a rule, this is how “aged” plants reproduce, for which anti-aging procedures are vital. To do this, such bushes need to be dug up. This is done in the spring. After digging up, the roots must be cleaned of the remnants of adhered soil. After that, the roots are cut into pieces. Each part must have at least one growth point. To trim the roots, you need to use a sharp and disinfected knife or pruner. Places of cuts must be treated with wood ash, activated carbon. For the same purpose, crushed chalk chips and colloidal sulfur are also well suited. The part of the roots that remains can be safely thrown away.
Repaired blackberries: the best varieties
- Prime Arc Freedom.
Such a remontant blackberry is famous among lovers of this culture for the fact that there are absolutely no sharp thorns on the shoots of the bushes. On the market, this variety appeared in the public domain relatively recently, in the 2013th year. The variety entered the territory of the former Soviet Union in 2015. This variety is included in the line of remontant blackberries, which consists of several varieties. The homeland of this whole group, which is called Prime, America. In the southern regions of the United States, it quickly fell in love with farmers who grow blackberries for sale. The berry has a rather dense structure, it tolerates transportation well. This variety begins to bear fruit in April, and this process continues until October. If you grow such a blackberry only on the stems of the current season, then ripening occurs quite quickly. This period falls, as a rule, on the last days of July or the first half of August. The berries of this remontant blackberry are usually uniform in size, with a black surface with a glossy texture. In their weight, berries can vary from twelve to fifteen grams. As for the length of the fruit, it is approximately four centimeters. If you harvest a double crop of this variety, then you need to be prepared that the size of the berries will not be so outstanding. At the same time, their weight is reduced to ten grams. Taste quality is at a high level, there is a tangible sweetness, which is set off by a delicate acidic component. The productivity of the variety is at a high level. From one plant, you can get from six to eight kilograms of berries. This type of blackberry has a fairly strong immunity, but if you do not follow the basic rules for growing, then the plant can get sick with anthracnose. In addition, gardeners note among the minuses not too good resistance to low temperatures. Such blackberries can withstand a maximum of 14 degrees. In the middle zone of our country, this variety must be grown exclusively in greenhouse conditions. Such a plant has good resistance to dry weather.
- Prime Arc Traveler.
This repairing blackberry is also a representative of the Prime line. He received a patent only in 2016. This variety of remontant blackberry was developed mainly for industrial cultivation. But this plant also shows good results in the gardens of summer residents. The berries are medium in size, reaching from seven to eight grams in weight. The berries look very nice, the shape of the fruit is elongated. Taste quality is at a high level, sweetness is clearly felt. The structure of the fruit is dense and contains quite a lot of juice. The aroma is quite bright. Such fruits can be well transported from place to place without losing their qualities. If you decide to freeze such berries, then after they are thawed, the taste and appearance will remain the same. From one plant, you can get about three kilograms of berries. The variety has strong immunity. Almost not affected by rust and anthracnose. The stems, unfortunately, can freeze from time to time, but the flower buds can withstand rather low temperatures. If you harvest both crops, you probably won't see much difference in the quality of the fruit. It is worth noting that berries that form in the fall can suffer from dry and too hot pores. In steady sultry weather, the flowering of plants is rather modest, while the fruits become small and not so tasty.
- Thornfree.
This variety of remontant blackberry was first bred by American breeders back in 1966. This plant does not have thorns on the shoots. It is worth noting that this is not quite a remontant variety. But if the climate conditions for this variety are suitable, then you can get a double harvest per season. In its weight, one fruit reaches about five grams. The size is about the same, they resemble an oval in shape. When the berry has not reached full maturity, it is colored purple. When the fruits are fully ripe, they are painted in a practical black tone. In this case, a dense structure is lost. The peak of taste and aroma falls on the full ripening of the berries. For this reason, it is not easy for a beginner farmer to “catch” the moment of harvesting. If the fruits are not ripe to the end, then there will be too much acidic component in them, and the aromatics will be inexpressive. If the berries, on the contrary, are overripe, then they acquire a too soft structure, and the expressiveness of the taste is lost. The main part of the fruit is usually harvested on the fifteenth of August. Productivity is at a very high level, from one plant you can get from twenty to twenty-five kilograms! Because of this, the shoots bend quite strongly and can reach almost to the soil. If the plant is grown in good climatic conditions, then, most likely, you can count on a second harvest wave. As a rule, it falls on the second half of October. This variety can withstand frosts down to -17 degrees. This blackberry has a fairly strong immunity to major diseases, but at the same time it can suffer from hot weather. Such a bush grows quite intensively, in its height the stems can even reach four meters. When such a blackberry is in bloom, then the shrub will become a real decoration of your site. The flowers are painted in a light pinkish shade, they are about three centimeters in diameter.
- Amara
This remontant blackberry is native to Chile. The berries are quite large, they can weigh up to fifteen grams. The taste is excellent. Many blackberry varieties sometimes have a slight bitterness in the aftertaste. Amara's berries don't have it. There are no thorns on the stems. Inside, the berry has a rather dense structure, for this reason, such fruits can be transported even over long distances. When the plant has bloomed, it should take two to three months before you can start picking berries. The berries reach full ripening in early September. Even at a very old age, a blackberry bush of this variety will delight you with its productivity and high quality of fruits.
- Black Magic.
Repaired blackberries of this variety are in great demand among lovers of this berry. It was obtained thanks to the efforts of breeders from Oregon in 2001. There are not too many thorns on the shoots, moreover, they are located, as a rule, in the main part of the stems. High temperatures as well as dry conditions do not adversely affect fruit ovaries. In its height, the bush reaches about two to three meters. It should be borne in mind that for such a plant, you need to install a support structure.
