They gained popularity due to their excellent taste of fruits, increased productivity, trees of this variety create a wonderful decorative look for your garden. Only hard work, diligence and always a caring attitude to their work.
Pear Williams - description and characteristics
English roots of the tree, late ripening of fruits, cultivation took place in the second half of the 18th century. Since then, the variety has been cultivated not only in England, but also in all countries where the climate contributes to the excellent growth of this pear tree. But on the territory of Russia, the variety took root only in the first half of the 20th century. In the middle of the 20th century, the variety was entered into the State Register already in an official form.
Increased attention is paid to the external characteristics of the tree. Growth is relatively average, does not exceed 250 centimeters. Crown shaping is similar to a pyramid. The color of the leaf cover of the tree is of a pronounced, green color, the abundance of leaves of a fairly large size. The shape is slightly concave, slightly elongated, closer to the apex. The branches of the tree are solid, strong, horizontal soil. Thanks to their power, they can easily support the weight of a bountiful pear harvest. Will not break or bend. The inflorescences are very large, white, slightly creamy, which makes them more attractive. Each inflorescence contains up to 8 smaller flowers. Flowering is relatively late, lasts for 14 days. Pollination can occur at the expense of other varieties, for example:Clapp's Favorite, Aleksandrovka, Forest beauty and a number of other varieties. But there is a variety that is not recommended for use as a pollinator - this is Lovely Louise. The average age of a tree, from the beginning of fruiting to the end, is about 10 years. After this milestone, the intensity of tree yield decreases markedly. Full fruiting occurs upon reaching the age of four. It continues steadily every season. With good care, there was no break in fruiting.
Pear Williams is distinguished by its large fruit size, a large weight of up to 250 grams, being directly on the tree, painted in a bright, green color. After harvesting, the fruits turn yellow with small specks. The barrels of the fruit are colored with a slight blush of reddish tint. The dense pulp of the fruit is quite delicate in taste, very juicy, endowed with a characteristic sweet rich taste.
The appearance of the fruit can be safely preserved even in full ripeness, even if you are a little late in harvesting. The presentation is preserved for up to 14 days on the tree, and the taste from this is only richer, aroma and sweetness are more pronounced.
Features of the variety
- Time limits for storage, transportation success.
In a special room, cool enough, the harvested crop can be stored for up to 3 months, which is very attractive and beneficial for any gardener. It gives you time to adjust the entire crop, make the necessary preparations or prepare for sale. You can use refrigerators or a regular storage cellar, where the temperature is not lower than +3 degrees. Due to keeping quality and ability to keep shape for a long time, fruits can be transported over long distances. In this case, the taste and presentation will not change.
- Method of using the fruit.
Williams is a pear variety that is classified as a dessert type. The main direction of use is fresh use. Canning is the second direction to use, for example: jams, juice, preserves, fruit salad, pie filling. Dried pear fruits add their aroma and taste to any compote during winter. When dried, the fruits will not lose their aroma and taste. Moreover, aromatization even increases during drying, a special saturation appears.
- The quality and quantity of the crop.
Subject to all the rules for caring for the tree, yields of a shattering scale are achieved. You can collect up to 120 kilograms of very fragrant and sweet fruits from each tree.
- Ripening terms.
At the beginning of August, the initial ripening of the fruits falls, at the end of the month, the harvest is already fully ripe. It is from the moment of full maturity that active harvesting begins.
- Growing pear Williams depending on the region of residence.
Very low frost resistance allows you to grow (cultivate) this variety only in the south of the regions of our huge country: Stavropol Territory, Crimea, Krasnodar Territory, North Caucasus, CIS countries (Moldova, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine, Abkhazia and a number of other states. There are, of course, those gardeners , who are endowed with enthusiasm and are able to grow the variety even in the middle lane, try only for the idea and of course trying to achieve the desired result.But such extreme cultivation carries great risks, therefore there is no particular spread of this idea. Since the winters are harsh, they are capable freeze a thermophilic culture.
Pests and diseases
Williams pear is not endowed with natural immunity to diseases and pests, which is why it is easily exposed to such active damage. Below are the most common diseases and parasites:
- scab;
- rust;
- cytosporosis;
- fruit rot;
- root cancer.
Insect pests:
- honeydew;
- aphid;
- gall mite;
- pear bug.
For preventive spraying against rust and scab, it is carried out by spraying twice a season with Bordeaux liquid of a 4% solution prepared in the following way: a bucket of water + copper sulfate 400 grams + lime 500 grams. All ingredients can be replaced with only one agent - colloidal sulfur in solution.
Cytosporosis - even with a slight manifestation, immediately treat the trees with copper sulfate + garden var.
Fruit rot is a rapidly spreading disease, therefore, constant preventive measures are recommended, using an iodine solution, 10 ml of the drug + a bucket of water, treat the tree. For spraying, we use conventional fungicides, for example Fitosporin. If prevention did not save and all the same the disease manifested itself, treatment with Zircon is urgent.
Root cancer is an incurable disease. All plants, to a lesser extent and in larger-scale lesions, must be immediately destroyed, that is, the tree must be uprooted, together with all the soil, burned. Disinfect the pit formed during the digging in several stages, at intervals.You can disinfect the root system of the plant even at the level of planting a young seedling, place the roots of the plant in a solution of copper sulfate, a solution of 80 grams of the drug in a bucket of water. Keep in this solution for at least 20 minutes. This will help prevent root cancer in the fruit tree by 90%.
In autumn and spring, it is recommended to treat all pear fruit trees with various fungicides. For example: Corsair, Iskra, Aktara, Inta-Vir.
Varieties
Pear Williams has subspecies: Red Williams (red pear), Duchess (Williams Summer), Williams winter (Curé),
Let's take a closer look at the listed subspecies:
- Red Williams - The harvest is fully ripe in September. The height of the tree is not very high. Fruit color with a slight reddish blush, much large in size, up to 0.270 kilograms, the pulp is especially tasty, very juicy, the skin of the fruit is very thin, almost transparent. The zest of the subspecies is richness and complete harmony in taste, light nutmeg aftertaste. If the subspecies is evaluated on a five-point scale, then this subspecies can be attributed to 4.7 points.
- Subspecies Duchess - is considered the most productive among the whole variety of pears. Mass ripening of the crop begins in mid-September. But it differs in a small mass of the fruit, no more than 170 grams, however, this small deficiency more than makes up for the juiciness, aroma, sweetness and taste of the fruit. The Duchess scent is generally a well-known feature. Among all subspecies, Duchess is the clear leader in all respects.
- Winter Williams - very powerful development of the trunk and branches, quite majestic growth, very beautiful and dense crown of the tree. The fruits are capable of gaining weight up to 230 grams, are colored yellow. Very tender, juicy, but a little knitting, fruit pulp. The peel of the pear is thick, rich, bright sweet, with a noticeable sourness taste.
Harvesting begins a little earlier than the full mechanical ripeness of the fruit. The shelf life does not exceed 45 days from the date of collection. If stored for a longer time, the fruits lose their taste and presentation.
Pear Williams: landing
Consistency and care is required in any gardening work, especially when working with some of the most finicky garden trees. Pear Williams is one of those. Therefore, only compliance with all the rules of agricultural technology for a given culture is the key to competent, high-quality planting and growth. So, the established rules:
- The site for planting a young pear seedling is selected sufficiently sunny, necessarily without stagnant moisture, that is, drier, protected from wind gusts by any buildings or other tall trees, but not heavily shaded. The composition of the soil for growing pears must be of fertile quality, a fairly loose consistency.
- The groundwater level is no closer to the ground surface than 2 meters.
- The plant for planting should be two years old, with a sufficiently strong, developed root system;
- In 14 days, we begin to prepare the planting pit, to a depth of 60 centimeters, almost 0.8 meters in diameter;
- Mandatory placement of high-quality drainage in the lower layer of the pit, after which a third of the pit is filled with a necessarily fertile layer of soil mixed with humus, you can add compost, manure. Place the soil in the form of a small mound;
- It is on this hill that the young tree is located, it is imperative to carefully spread the roots, sprinkle the roots with the remaining earth;
- Next, tamp the soil layer a little and be sure to shed it well, cover the near-trunk area with a layer of mulch-humus, peat or sawdust.
Pear Williams: leaving
What is the main care for this variety:
- Watering - up to 4 times every 7 days, water only young seedlings. For an older tree, it is enough several times during the entire growing season, no more than 7 times.There are, of course, exceptions - a prolonged drought in summer. Then the frequency and amount of watering must be increased. The increased drought intolerance of the Williams variety is taken into account;
- Top dressing takes place in three stages. In the spring, use rotted manure. The beginning of flowering is a fertilizer containing nitrogen and potassium. In autumn, it is necessary to feed with organics and minerals, strictly after the last harvest. You can use both available drugs and purchased special complexes, it is only necessary to strictly use it according to the instructions;
- Pruning - the main direction of such work is the correct shaping of the crown of the tree and, of course, to exclude increased thickening. The time period for pruning is spring and autumn;
- Loosening, weeding - the frequency and regularity of this event is an important factor in the care of Williams. We very carefully weed the weed all around the trunk circle, remove the debris. Loosening is necessary for excellent oxygen passage to the root system;
- The frost resistance of the variety is average, even below average. Therefore, even an adult plant needs shelter, especially young seedlings.
Pear Williams: advantages and disadvantages
When considering a particular variety, a large number of positive characteristics can be emphasized:
- wonderful, distinctive taste;
- significantly large size;
- significant quantity of the harvest;
- excellent endurance for transportation;
- simple steps in courtship;

Speaking specifically about the shortcomings, we highlight the following:
- frost resistance is very low;
