Propagation of strawberries with a mustache
A strawberry is a berry that is not that difficult to propagate. Propagating strawberries with a mustache is a popular breeding method. And also good seedlings can be obtained by dividing the bush. The mustache is a strawberry shoot, on which foliage rosettes can develop, and later roots begin to appear. Having carefully fixed in the ground, new plants are obtained from them.
· Characteristics of the mustache. Let's see what a mustache is. One branch can accommodate up to 7 outlets per season. One bush is capable of producing up to 15 shoots with rosettes. The whiskers can begin to form if the daylight hours are more than 12 hours, and the temperature should also be above +15 degrees. Those rosettes that differ in strength begin to form in the first year after planting. Over time, the whiskers begin to get smaller, and by the end, the strawberries completely stop forming the whiskers. Compared to seed reproduction, whisker reproduction has many advantages:
· In a fairly short time, you can get a large number of new plants.
· Mustaches do not lose their "maternal" characteristics.
· Sockets have a high survival rate.
· Such reproduction is easy and affordable.
· How to get a mustache.
In order to propagate strawberries, a mustache obtained in July is ideal. They are very strong, already well formed, until the winter period they will be able to form powerful roots and make a bookmark of a large number of flower buds. You can get up to 13-15 whiskers from one bush. The whiskers that appear first are large. The subsequent whiskers are no longer so large, but they can still be used as breeding. Those mustaches that are very small and not suitable for reproduction, then they must be removed so that they do not slow down the growth and development of the bush.
An important point is that the mustache must be taken from those bushes that have a large number of horns. On a plot, it is better to choose a plant that meets certain characteristics (taste, berry size, quantity and quality of the harvest). In such a plant, you need to cut off all the peduncles so that the plant is focused only on the formation of a mustache. If you combine the process of breeding and fruit bearing, then you will not be able to get a good harvest or the benefits of breeding strawberries. As soon as you see the roots on the surface of the mustache, sprinkle them with slightly moistened soil, but do not move it away from the mother plant. During dry weather, you need to water the plant up to 3 times a week, if it is rainy weather, then reduce the amount of watering.
No need to rush and separate the rosettes from the strawberry bushes. Some summer residents choose rooting the mustache directly into the nutrient container, while burying it a little in the ground. This method is much better, because when you plant these seedlings in a permanent place, you will do it with a small piece of soil, which will greatly simplify the process of adapting strawberries to a new place. After you harvest, after about 12-14 days, the mustache will already be well formed and have a good and strong root system.
How to get horns from strawberries grown with mulch
If the bed with the mother bush, on which the strawberries are grown, is closed with mulch, then the mustache should be dived when there are 3 leaves and root buds on the ends of the horns. Such outlets need light soil.but in fact, this breeding method did not gain its popularity among summer residents, since this is a laborious process and in the future you will need to separate a separate place for seedlings.
Propagation of strawberries with a mustache: root the mustache in a permanent place
For every plant, reproduction is a complex and energy-intensive process. Therefore, when transplanting a plant to a permanent place, it needs some time to fully adapt. Therefore, planting a mustache immediately to a permanent place has always had a number of advantages:
· The root system penetrates the soil better and deeper than in seedlings.
· The plant can independently extract water from the ground.
· Strawberries become resistant to dry weather.
· Such rooting will bring more berries.
Sockets can be planted either in the hotel row, or by planting them next to the mother plant. The first method works well if you are planting strawberries in one row. When young plants have already acquired a lot of strength, then they can be removed from the mother bush. The second method is good to use when you want to get a large harvest of strawberries, and there is not so much space on your site. In mid-August, you need to choose those plants that are weaker. Those that remain should also be well examined. A distance of up to 30 cm must be created between the mustache and the mother plant. Do not forget that in any case, all plants need to be given the necessary care and attention.
Propagating strawberries by dividing the bush
This method is suitable if the bush is not capable of producing shoots that meet the main signs (sick, weak). But you need to divide the strawberry bush when it reaches 3 years of age. Young plants do not yet contain the required number of shoots and horns for reproduction, and old bushes are no longer capable of reproduction. Choose the largest 3-year-old strawberry bush and divide it into parts. One bush can be divided into 6-20 horns. In the first half of August, the resulting horns must be transplanted to their permanent place. By the end of September, you will be able to get new plants. This method of reproduction has not gained much popularity; it is used only when necessary. When you get new horns, you can repot them in a permanent place, they will grow there for about 4 years. But do not forget that the soil must be well prepared before planting strawberries. Young plants should not be planted in the soil where potatoes or tomatoes used to grow. A mustache in such soil will be oppressed. If potatoes or tomatoes grew on that soil not so long ago, then there will be less discharge harmful to strawberries. If you do not have another option for planting young plants, then you can plant after these crops, but you should not wait for a good and large harvest. Also, strawberries cannot be planted in the soil on which pumpkin crops grew. As it grows, the pumpkin takes up large amounts of nitrogen. When planting strawberries in such soil, strawberries may be deficient in nitrogen, which is necessary for the development and growth of strawberries.
Propagation of strawberries with a mustache: possible mistakes
When propagating strawberries, beginners in the summer cottage business can make certain mistakes:
· The first mistake is the early separation of the whiskers from the mother plant. The horns must form a strong root system before separating the mustache from the "mother". The first such strong whiskers begin to form in June (end of May). Separating earlier can harm the growth and development of the plant.
· The second problem is the uncontrolled growth of the mustache. In such a situation, the mother plant will receive less nutrients, and, accordingly, the whiskers will fully develop.
· Inexperienced summer residents first slightly drop the mustache with soil, and only then transplant it to a permanent place. Frequent plant transplanting can harm it. Plant adaptation can take a lot of time and effort.
· If you plant strawberries in soil that has not been prepared in advance.
If you can properly organize the propagation of strawberries with a mustache, you can get even more harvest of this berry.
