Propagation of adenium by cuttings: methods
Content:
Overgrown plants often need to be trimmed. This is especially true of adenium, which is characterized by rapid growth rates. What to do if it is a pity to throw out the cut shoots? The way out will be the reproduction of adenium by cuttings. One of the advantages of this method is that a beautiful bush will grow from a cuttings twice as fast as from seeds.
The most favorable period for propagation of adenium by cuttings at home is summer, immediately after spring pruning. In summer, the plant receives a lot of heat and light. If this is not enough for the cuttings, their root can begin to rot.
Cuttings can be immersed both in the ground and in the water. For the first option, a light mixture of peat and perlite is perfect.
Reproduction of adenium by cuttings step by step

Reproduction of adenium by cuttings at home does not require a lot of effort and special skills. It is better to stop the choice of shoots on those that are above. These cuttings take root better, and a more beautiful bush grows out of them. However, any other parts of the plant can be used. The length of the cuttings should be around 15 cm. Before rooting the cuttings, you need to carry out several preliminary steps.
- First, you need to clean off the leaves from the part of the cuttings that will be directly in the ground or water.
- Secondly, after pruning, you need to let the cuttings dry out and wait until the juice ceases to stand out. 20-30 minutes will be enough.
- Thirdly, it should be treated with a growth stimulant.
Very important remember that adenium juice is extremely poisonous. It is worth using gloves when working with it, and also avoid getting the juice on the skin and eyes.
Propagation of adenium by cuttings: rooting methods
Rooting in the ground
Regular garden soil is not suitable for rooting cuttings. The soil for them should not be heavy. It is also important that it allows water to pass through, and not retain it. In heavy soil, it will be difficult for the roots to break through, and constant moisture can provoke rotting of the cuttings.
The best option for such propagation of adenium by cuttings is a soil mixture of perlite and fluorine in proportions of 3: 1.
The cuttings should be immersed in the ground no more than 5 cm. The pot in which the cutting is located must be covered with a foil to avoid loss of heat and water. It is also necessary to maintain the illumination.
Adenium bushes can be transplanted after the roots appear on the cutting.
Rooting in water
Water is not the best environment for adenium. By its nature, this plant does not like excessive moisture. This is due to the fact that in the wild, adenium lives in deserts.
Thus, by placing the stalk in water, you increase its chances of decay.
However, rooting in water is still possible. If you notice that the bottom of the cutting has started to rot, you need to prune it and place the shoot in the water again. It is important that the water is fresh. When the roots appear at the cutting, it can be transplanted into the ground.
