Gardening - gardening calendar for august
Content:
August is the last month of summer, when nature is gradually preparing for the inevitable arrival of autumn. However, this does not mean that the work in the garden is over. On the contrary, despite the empty beds of strawberries and raspberries, it is worth taking care of other crops so that they give us a good harvest and are properly prepared for the coming winter.
We make blanks
A huge number of chores and worries lie in wait for the hostesses in August. Watermelons, melons, peaches, apples, grapes and more. You need to have time to harvest, cook jam, pickle vegetables for the winter and not forget about collecting medicinal herbs. These include: hop cones, caraway seeds, fragrant chamomile, celandine, white claret, sage and mullein, which will definitely come in handy in winter for strengthening immunity and treating many diseases. Gardening at the end of the month is drying parsley and dill. They are collected in small bouquets, rinsed with cool water and hung in a well-ventilated place where the sun's rays practically do not fall.
Collecting seeds
By the end of the summer season, it is necessary to take care of the harvesting of seeds. In order for the tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers of your favorite varieties to have the opportunity to delight you in the coming year, you need to collect seeds from the strongest and most productive bushes. However, in no case should you experiment with hybrids, because they do not retain their varietal characteristics at all. And in the new season, it is better to buy new seeds that will delight you with tasty and healthy fruits.
We put things in order in the beds
In August, we partially free our beds from vegetables. After that, it is necessary to clear the ground of any plant debris, be it roots or leaves, and sow with green manure, which will save the earth from weathering and pull the nutrients that are contained in the depths to the upper layers of the soil. All this will improve the very structure of the earth. Suitable for sowing at this stage: annual lupine, oil radish, oats, phacelia, rye, mustard, and rapeseed.
In the second half of the month, towards the end of summer, it is time for garden strawberries. If you want the next summer to be just as “sweet”, choose not one, but several varieties at once, differing in terms of ripening of berries. Once every 10 days, it is necessary to remove the mustache on it, and feed the remontant varieties abundantly. Young plantings must be fertilized with mullein tincture, plants of two years old and older should be sprinkled with ash, because they need more potassium for good growth and a tasty harvest.
Taking care of the garden
The garden in August requires no less attention than in other months of the year. Gardening continues at the same pace. The carrion under the trees must be cleaned without fail, because it is in it that harmful larvae live that can destroy trees. Among other things, it is definitely worth continuing the relentless fight against weeds and checking the supports of the trees.
In the case of twisting of leaves on trees, it is worth suspecting the presence of the "work" of aphids. Young plants are better treated with chemicals, and those that ripen respond well to processing with infusion of garlic, marigolds, celandine and other folk remedies.
The raspberry tree that has brought the crop must be completely cleared of old shoots. They need to be cut to the very bottom to prevent any possible diseases and pests that can swallow the plant in winter. Cutting the shoots will allow us to free up more nutrients for new shoots, as well as to provide them with good wind blowing and a lot of sun, since the illumination in this case increases several times. Repaired raspberry varieties respond best to feeding with ash, because a second harvest awaits them ahead, and ash is the best natural fertilizer.
Mandatory garden work for August is sanitary pruning under the trees. This list includes cherries, plums and sea buckthorn, because over a long period of summer, there is a high probability of growth of root growth, which will interfere with trees in the future to extract nutrients from the soil. It is for this purpose that it is recommended to be removed.
In the case of the appearance of gum on trees, it is necessary to carefully clean off the damaged tree bark with a knife, and carefully coat the affected area on the tree with garden varnish.
In this hot August season, it is worth checking, and even removing the so-called fishing belts for the northern regions. Those that may come in handy in the future and be used more than once must be cleaned and postponed until the next fruitful year. Disposable trapping belts must be burned.
Paying attention to greenhouses
It is worth taking care of greenhouses with particular tenderness, because at the beginning of the month real or downy mildew may appear there. From this dew, plants can not only lose their beautiful "marketable" appearance, but also the strength for the ripening of a new, strong harvest.
To prevent possible losses, it is required to start spraying the lashes with various microbiological agents in advance, because they, in addition to preventing the appearance of dew, will strengthen the plants from bacteriosis.
In the early stages of diseases, folk remedies will be good: add half a kilogram of ash and a small amount of soap to 10 liters of warm water; in 10 liters of water add 2 tbsp. tablespoons of dry mustard; dissolve 1 tbsp in 4 liters of water. spoon of baking soda and add half a teaspoon of liquid soap. One of the above consistencies must be sprayed on the ground and plants. In case of detecting the slightest signs of gray or white rot on peppers or cucumbers, immediately wipe the plaque with a dry cloth, removing it from the plants, and then treat it with ash, a weak solution of diluted potassium permanganate or chalk diluted to the state of gruel.
In order for the extension of the harvest to be possible, a treatment with urea is required for each leaf. The solution is prepared as follows: 1/2 tbsp. add 10 liters of water). It is also necessary to mulch the topsoil with grass, peat or, if you have neither one, nor the other, rotted sawdust. These actions will allow the leaves to "come to life", become as viable as possible, as well as enhance the transformation of new roots and, ultimately, give strength for the growth of new cucumbers.
As for greenhouse tomatoes during this period, they are highly susceptible to late blight. Microbiological preparations, which were created to protect greenhouse crops from an ailment called late blight, will help here. Another good remedy is to remove the lower leaves for prophylaxis. However, the main thing here is not to overdo it and process no more than two sheets at a time. But what should be categorically avoided is the use of chemicals, since they accumulate in the fruits and can cause colossal harm to our body in the future.
We continue watering and weeding
At the end of the last summer month, weed control should not be stopped under any circumstances, during this period they more than ever contribute to the development and spread of pathogenic bacteria. Watering in the last month of summer is a must in the garden. But watering crops intended for harvesting is not worth it. Excessive moisture reduces their keeping quality.Young trees and shrubs, such as gooseberries, are required for watering. With an insufficient amount of water, it can shed foliage, which will have an extremely negative effect on the harvest in the coming year.
We are revising the diet of horticultural crops
In the last month of summer, it is important to think about the future fruitful year. It is important to help trees, as well as shrubs, complete their growing season correctly. It is recommended to stop feeding the soil with nitrogen, since its excess stimulates growth, and for a good wintering, on the contrary, maturation of wood is required. It is now possible to feed the garden only with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers, while it is very undesirable to use potassium chloride, because many plants react poorly to its presence in the soil. Ash can be used for feeding. As practice shows, it is able to replace superphosphate.
In case of good growth of fruitful crops during the season (the length of annual shoots has reached 40 cm or more), it is necessary to limit watering. In the northern regions, it is also recommended to pinch the tops on the berry fields (not counting the red currant) to stop growth by artificial means.
We form the harvest
The formation of cucumbers and tomatoes is recommended to be carried out closer to the end of August, if this work in the garden has not been done earlier. To do this, you need to pinch the whips and break off the tops of the plant. Such actions will allow your plants to spend energy only on the fruits that have already set, and not be "distracted" by the fruits that have already set, but still will not have time to catch up in time.
Currant and gooseberry bushes, after harvesting, should be fed. This will stimulate the maturation of new buds with fruits. For such a "feeding" of gooseberries and red currants, double potassium superphosphate (1 tbsp. Spoon) mixed with 2 tbsp. tablespoons of potassium. In order to "feed" the black currant, you need to mix 2 tbsp. tablespoons of double superphosphate plus 1 tbsp. a spoonful of potassium.
We fight diseases and pests
As we all know very well, August is a season of hot days and relatively cold nights. In addition, August is a time of abundant dew and partly heavy rains. All housewives should stock up on steel patience and diligently fight diseases spreading in the garden and vegetable garden. For this, folk remedies or biological products that fight infection in the safest way are ideal; when using which, moreover, it is allowed to remove ripe fruits. For example, the use of any other chemical means does not allow this to be done for two weeks, which is very bad for the plants in the future.
Landing
People living in the northern regions are familiar with the situation of early frosts in early September - the time for planting winter garlic. However, this method is also well suited for housewives living in the south.
So, the deep planting method is a method in which a hole with a depth of 12-15 cm is pulled out, a complex fertilizer is placed on its bottom. A bulb is placed above it, which is sprinkled with 1 tbsp. a spoonful of sand. After all this, the hole is covered with earth. This method is perfect for garlic to build up the root system in the cold. Moreover, thanks to this, the garlic will not have time to rise by the winter and will have time to be nourished with useful substances and will be protected from decay for the next summer.
