Content:
In this article, we will study in detail the late varieties of potatoes, give them a description and indicate the main properties and qualities. We will also get acquainted with the characteristics of late potatoes, we will give instructions on their cultivation and care.
Late potato varieties: main features
Growing late-ripening potato varieties in summer cottages is not a frequent matter, this is due to the long growing season. For a vegetable to fully ripen, from the moment the first shoots hatch, it takes 90-140 days - not every region spoils the weather with warm days, especially in such quantities. It follows from this that late-ripening potatoes are most often grown in the southern regions, where summer begins in May and lasts at least until September. Main characteristics of late potatoes.
Like any variety, late varieties of potatoes have their own characteristics and characteristics; you need to approach very carefully the selection of a variety specifically for your garden. Late varieties of potatoes are:
- medium late, the duration of the growing season of medium late varieties of potatoes is 90-115 days, from the moment the first shoots hatch;
- late, the duration of the growing season in late varieties is longer, and it lasts 110-140 days, from the moment the shoots appear. The features of medium-late and late potatoes are absolutely identical:
- late varieties of root vegetables contain a lot of beneficial substances and starch - dishes from it are nourishing, high-calorie and tasty; - these root vegetables boil well, but at the same time retain their shape in such dishes as, for example, soups. This is due to the average percentage of starch in root crops - it is about 12 -20%;
- late varieties of potatoes are often grown for long-term storage - they are stored calmly until next summer, while their marketable appearance and taste characteristics will not be lost, of all varieties, they have the best storage rate; - since the growing season in late varieties of potatoes is long, during this period potatoes are subject to a huge number of "sores" - from late blight to potato scab. We strongly recommend choosing protected varieties for planting, creating favorable conditions for growth, as well as preventing infection, starting with the treatment of planting material with special preparations, and continuing to process them during the cultivation process; - for harvesting late varieties of potatoes, the weather should be dry and preferably windy, the tubers must be cleaned from the ground, while not damaging the structure of the potatoes, otherwise the shelf life of such potatoes will be much shorter.
When choosing a potato variety, carefully study the recommendations indicated on the package, there you can also find information on possible diseases of a particular variety, and prevent diseases in advance.
Variety Asterix
This late variety was bred by the Dutch, but it is well adapted for the regions of the Far East, as well as for the Middle Volga. From the moment of planting to harvesting root crops, it takes about 120 -130 days, the first crop can be harvested already on the hundredth day. The plant is erect, quite tall - about 80 cm, long flowering. This variety is renowned for its stable yield, good sore tolerance and excellent taste. For the industrial production of chips, it is often the Asterix variety that is used.In one nest, an average of 6-11 potatoes grow, the average weight of each is 63-110 grams. It is possible to harvest 30,000 kg from one hectare (10,000 sq.m.). vegetables.
Late potato varieties: Zhuravinka variety
The mid-late potato variety Zhuravinka is a cross of the Polish variety Ceza with the Dutch Sante, it was bred in Belarus, and took root very well in Russia. From the moment of planting to the moment of harvesting, approximately 90-110 days pass, for this reason it is classified as a medium-late, and not a late species. The height of the bushes is about 60 cm, the plants are semi-erect, the shoots appear evenly. The variety is "multi-tuberous", that is, it has a high yield. In one nest, an average of 16-25 potatoes grow, the average weight of each is 90-140 grams. From one hectare (10,000 sq.m.) 60,000 kg can be harvested. vegetables. The Zhuravinka variety is resistant to weather conditions and various disasters such as drought and a sharp drop in air temperature. But the only disadvantage of this variety is the high risk of contracting late blight, from which the foliage and the fruits themselves suffer.
Zarnitsa variety
This is a late variety of root crops, which also comes from Belarus, it has become remarkably mastered in the central and southern regions of Russia. From the moment when the planting material is planted until the time of harvesting, it takes about 120 to 140 days, that is, the growing season is quite long, which is why it is rarely found in other regions of Russia. The height of the bushes is low within 60 cm, the tops of Zarnitsa grows very intensively, the seedlings appear evenly. The fries taste good and are good for fries. One nest grows from 10 to 15 tubers, with an average weight of 120 grams each. The productivity index is high, for example, from one hectare (10,000 sq.m.) it is possible to collect 50,000 kg. vegetables. The Zarnitsa variety perfectly tolerates dry weather, but is vulnerable to viruses and sores, late blight is very harmful for it, but the variety is immune to such "sores" as black leg, scab.
Late potato varieties: Zdabytak variety
This is a Belarusian variety that has taken root in the central and Middle Volga regions of Russia. The growing season lasts approximately 120-140 days. Plants of medium height - around 60 cm, root crops have a scarlet color. One nest grows from 12 to 15 potatoes, each weighing about 100-120 grams. From one hectare (10,000 sq.m.) it is possible to collect 32,000 kg. This variety keeps well and tolerates transportation. A distinctive feature of Zdabytak is a high level of starch - 28%. Mashed potatoes and casseroles are great from this potato variety. Variety Zdabytak is resistant to potato crayfish, slightly susceptible to potato roundworms, and partially invulnerable to late blight.
Lorkh variety
This mid-late variety is an old, domestic selection, it grows in regions such as the Ural, Middle Volga, North Caucasian, Central and others. From the moment of planting, after 100-140 days, you can safely harvest. The height of the bushes is quite high - 80 cm, the tubers are light beige. In one nest, an average of 15 large root crops grow, the average weight of each is about 120 grams. The yield is quite decent, it is possible to harvest 35,000 kg from one hectare (10,000 sq.m.). Potatoes are perfectly stored, while they do not lose their satiety and flavor characteristics. Lorkh tubers contain a decent amount of starch - 20%, which means they are ideal for mashed potatoes, for pancakes or for starch. This variety is resistant to viruses, but unfortunately not to diseases such as ring rot, potato cancer, late blight. Poorly tolerates arid climate.
Saturn grade
This variety is medium late, often grown for processing into potato products. Most often it is grown in the central region. The period between planting until the time of harvesting the root crop lasts approximately 115 - 120 days. The plants are tall.Taste characteristics are normal, this variety is more suitable for the production of alcohol, and for the production of starch. For home use, it is recommended to choose a variety with a more pronounced taste. One potato weighs about 100 grams. The yield is quite decent, from one hectare (10,000 sq.m.) it is possible to harvest 28,000 kg. Potatoes are well stored, suitable for transportation, and can also be grown for sale. There is a large amount of starch in the tubers of the Saturn variety - about 21%. A huge plus of this variety is its resistance to diseases, both viral and bacterial, it has a stable immunity to late blight and other terrible diseases.
Late potato varieties: Chaika variety
This is a late potato variety, it was bred in Russia. It should preferably be grown in the North-West region and the Volgo-Vyatka region. 120 days are sufficient between planting and harvesting. In one nest, an average of 11 root crops ripen, the average weight of each is about 75-120 grams. The yield indicator of the variety is quite high, so, from one hectare (10,000 sq.m.) it is possible to collect 40,000 kg. Taste characteristics are very good, you can cook absolutely any dish from it. The tubers of the Chaika variety have a low starch content of only 15%. Potatoes are perfectly stored, the percentage of crop safety is quite high - 92%. This variety is not afraid of potato cancer, and is less resistant to late blight, to roundworms, and vulnerable to scab. According to the recommendations of agronomists, seed potatoes must be germinated before planting.
Variety Atlant
This is a late variety, which was bred by Belarusians; it has taken root in most regions of our country. The growing season lasts from 100 to 120 days. In one nest, an average of 7-11 potatoes ripen, each weighing from 90 to 120 grams. The productivity of the variety is consistently high, it is possible to harvest 65,000 kg from one hectare (10,000 sq.m.), absolutely regardless of climatic conditions and temperature conditions. The taste characteristics of the tubers are at a height, they boil very well, they go well with absolutely any dishes. The tubers of the Atlant variety have a high starch content - 21%. This variety remarkably counteracts various diseases and viruses, including late blight.
Late potato varieties: growing
Of course, due to the long growing season of late varieties, it is not possible to harvest the potato crop several times per season, which accordingly affects the overall yield. But this small minus is compensated by the fact that the taste qualities of the late varieties of tubers are remarkable, the presentation is preserved for a long time, and the potatoes themselves are stored without problems until the next season. If you want to eat fresh roots in the middle of the summer season, then you should take care of additional planting on the site of early maturing varieties.
For the southern regions, there is no problem with growing late varieties; root crops will have time to fully ripen with interest. In the central regions, it is necessary to take up cultivation with caution, since in the spring there is a high risk of spring frosts, and in the fall there is a high probability that potatoes will not be dug out of the dry land, due to possible rains. In the northern regions of the country, the cultivation of late varieties of potatoes is rare, but it does happen. When growing late varieties in the northern regions, care must be taken to germinate the tubers, and only then plant them on the site. Thus, the time spent by potatoes in the garden is reduced, which makes it possible for the "northerners" to get a good harvest. Late varieties of potatoes have their advantages and disadvantages; they are by no means required in less demand than early ripening varieties.
In order to grow and harvest a good harvest, you need to adhere to some rules and plant only high-quality planting material.
