In order for the planting of turnips to give a good harvest in the form of huge root crops, it is necessary to choose the right time and place for planting the culture, as well as follow the correct instructions for caring for turnips. So, in almost all stores there are always turnip seeds, the variety of which is called "Petrovsky". However, in addition to this popular variety among gardeners, experts also identify other interesting and productive varieties of this crop that can and should be grown in their garden. As in any other culture, turnip varieties differ in several features, for example, according to the ripening time, turnip is divided into early, middle and late varieties. The early varieties ripen within one and a half, two months after planting the culture, the middle ones - two or three months, and the later ones - no less than three months later. Therefore, further we will talk about how turnip planting is carried out.
Planting turnip and its types
So, there is a large number of delicious turnips of various varieties, which will differ in their variety of colors, tastes and quality. There are varieties, for example, glasha, which are distinguished by their unimaginable and unique taste. Root crops of a similar culture have a flattened oblong shape, and the vegetable itself is distinguished by its whitish color and tenderness of its skin. Inside, the turnip is predominantly juicy and dense. Experts recommend using such a turnip for the preparation of dishes related to canning and salads. The weight of such a turnip can reach from seventy to one hundred grams. Since this crop is early in nature, experts clarify that it must be planted as early as possible, since it ripens for about forty to forty-seven days.
Golden ball is also a popular and tasty variety of this culture; this name is due to the fact that the roots of such a turnip look like large yellow balls. This yield is average in terms of ripening. Such large and large yellow balls can even weigh four hundred grams, on average, and can reach half a kilogram. Such a turnip must be grown in a greenhouse and it is advisable to cover it with a bar, however, experts indicate that it is possible without it. However, such a culture ripens for a long period of time compared to the previous variety, approximately the time will be limited to seventy days.
A variety such as the Snow Maiden is also distinguished by early ripening. The roots of this turnip will be soft, white and tender, but the weight of such turnips will be small, since each of them will reach a maximum of fifty, sixty and seventy grams. Such a culture grows in about forty-eight or more days, sometimes reaching sixty days.
Planting turnip: planting timing
To achieve an early productive harvest from a crop, it is necessary for several months, two or three months are enough, before planting turnips in open soil, take care of seedlings, and at the end of May, seedlings must be planted on harvested beds. There is another way of planting turnip, in which you can accelerate the process of ripening of the turnip root crop, for this it is necessary to plant the seeds in open ground before winter, which will give the seeds hardened and develop in the soil. In this case, the first shoots can be seen in early spring. Experts note that when planting turnips, not many people are engaged in seedlings, everyone is more accustomed to immediately planting the culture in an open land surface. As already noted, it is possible to plant turnips in open soil already in the second half of April and until the end of May, in which case, it is necessary to take into account that the land for planting turnips should already move away from frost, since only frost-resistant seeds can grow in cold soil , all other seeds will die. One disadvantage of planting in the spring is that such a crop will only be consumed for a short period of time and will not be suitable for winter storage. In this case, if you plan to preserve the turnip crop for a long period of time, you need to plant it in July. In order to choose the right planting time, you need to focus on the type of turnip that you plan to plant, since the ripening time is individual for different varieties. However, experts advise not to delay planting, since the ripening of root crops should also not be frozen, since after such a root crop cannot be stored for a long time in a cold period.
Features of planting turnips
Before you start planting turnips, its seeds must be dipped into glasses with a solution of one hundred milliliters of water and five grams of salt. This will prevent the formation of various cruciferous diseases. After that, you need to pay attention to the fact that the seeds that will be at the bottom of the glass with the solution will be suitable for planting, and the floating seeds must be thrown away, they will not give a crop. After that, it is necessary to disinfect the seeds in a cloth bag in a thermos with water, which should be at a temperature of at least fifty-four degrees Celsius. Disinfection must be carried out within twenty minutes, and then the seeds must be immersed in chilled water. This process must be carried out so that the entire infection dies in hot water, and future embryos become hardened in cold water. Instead of such heating, experts also advise using a solution of potassium permanganate in a proportion of four grams of powder per one glass of water. And in the aftermath of such disinfection, it is necessary to rinse the turnip grains and place them in a damp cloth, so they will begin to hatch. Experts note that turnip negatively tolerates root damage, therefore, in order to grow a healthy root crop, it is necessary to plant seedlings in peat tablets or pots, and then they must be buried in the ground.
Since the seedlings of this culture need humidity and temperatures from plus five degrees Celsius to plus fifteen degrees Celsius, the seeds planted in pots must be covered with a glass lid. So they will get stronger before planting them in open soil. When the first shoots begin to appear, it will be necessary to cut off the weak processes and leave only strong plants. In the future, they will need to be watered and fed, as well as periodically loosened.
Before planting seedlings in open ground, experts advise to temper the plants. To do this, you need to take out the plants every day to fresh air, first at a time when the temperature reaches its maximum, that is, around the middle of the day, and then gradually increase the time outdoors. This must be done within about two weeks, then the sprouts will get strong enough and the seedlings must be taken out into fresh air for the whole day and day. Of course, experts note that it takes a lot of time to grow turnips through seedlings, and, moreover, turnips do not like transplants very much.
In order to plant turnips in open ground, it is necessary to prepare them in advance, preferably in the fall. Choosing the right site will ensure good turnip growth. For this, it is recommended to choose t soil that was previously used for crops that are considered legumes, as well as potato crops and tomatoes. It is not recommended to plant turnips in a land where horseradish, lettuce and other cruciferous crops were previously sitting, as after them harmful infections can remain in the soil. Also, experts note that if you want to save space during planting, you can plant peas or beans in the aisle. Also, experts express a wish to gardeners that turnip grows well in ash, and before digging up the soil, you can kindle a fire in the future bed, and then distribute the burnt coals over the entire area of the land on which you plan to plant turnip seeds. However, fresh manure cannot be brought into digging, since turnip does not tolerate it. It is better to add fifteen grams of any nitrogen substances, potash and phosphorus fertilizers when digging, then the turnip will feel comfortable in the future.
After the above manipulations, it will be possible to carry out turnips in open ground during the winter or early spring. When planting, you need to loosen the soil and then compact it a little. The distance between the beds should be up to twenty centimeters. If you do not take into account the savings in seeds, then you can sow seeds quite thickly, observing a distance of one centimeter for each seed. When the first shoots appear, it will be necessary to remove weak plants so that only viable and strong seedlings remain in the garden. If the planting of turnips will occur in early spring, then the seeds must be planted two centimeters from each other. In the fall, it is necessary to observe deep grooves and plant seeds after the frost has passed, when the ground is already frozen enough and turned into dense formations. After that, it is necessary to cover the seeds with warm, prepared peat in advance and leave them until spring, then the first shoots will appear. Experts also recommend marking the edges of the rows with stakes so that in the spring you can identify the places where the sprouts should emerge. When the first shoots appear, it is also necessary to remove weak shoots, and to protect against turnip pests, it is necessary to treat the bed with ash, cover the soil with hay or last year's leaves with a layer of about five centimeters. Unnecessary weeds will not break through such a barrier, and the ground itself under the turnip will remain loose and moist. This process will need to be repeated after a couple of months and then it is recommended to provide the turnip with space at a distance of at least one centimeter.
Open field care after planting
Young plants also need care, despite the fact that turnip is not a particularly whimsical crop. Watering is the main condition for caring for seedlings, as otherwise the future roots will be bitter. In dry weather, the beds must be moistened twice a week and at least five liters of water must be poured per square meter. However, when the turnip reaches the required size, watering will need to be stopped, as excess moisture can lead to cracks. Turnip especially needs watering during the period from sowing seeds to the first growth of sunrises; during the formation of true leaves and during the period of active growth of root crops. At the same time, the turnip does not need any special fertilizers, and if you properly prepare the beds for planting seedlings, then the plant has enough nutrition. However, experts recommend feeding the plant with organic matter a couple of times during the growth, namely watering the seedlings with herbaceous infusion, and for protection from pests, experts recommend a decoction prepared on the basis of tomato leaves and potato leaves.
All of the above suggests that in order to get an early positive harvest, turnips can be grown through seedlings, but this will take you a lot of time and effort, as the plants do not like transplanting.Experts recommend planting seeds in open soil after warming up the earth after frosts, since you will receive such a birth within a month and a half after the first rising of culture begins to appear.
But at the same time, after the spring planting of turnips, it is necessary to use up the entire crop, and after the winter harvest, the seeds will need to be sown in July. If you correctly calculate the timing of planting turnips, in order to use the entire crop before the onset of frost. You should also pay attention to the features of the turnip variety, since some species cannot be stored for a long time, then they should be eaten first. After the first sprouts of culture appear, turnips must be periodically rowed, since they do not like density. The rest of the care of the crop will not be laborious if the soil has been prepared correctly in advance. A couple of dressings and abundant watering at the right times will be enough for you.
