Planting cabbage outdoors: the most popular types of cabbage
Each type of cabbage has its own correct planting method. Not all cabbage is planted with seedlings, which one needs to be sown in open ground with seeds. Of course, the most popular types of cabbage are: White, Cauliflower, Savoy, Brussels, Chinese, Peking and Kohlrabi. Each of this species has its own terms of planting and maturation. And the planting patterns also depend on the species. Care is also different for each species, since the methods of cultivation are different.
Planting cabbage outdoors: the best predecessors
Planting cabbage outdoors: the best predecessors
For the cultivation of any kind of cabbage, it is very important to choose the right planting site. The predecessors are also an equally important factor. The best for her will always be legumes, as well as onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, beets and carrots. But the requirements for soil and fertilizers are completely different for each species. Early ripening varieties should be planted in sunny areas so that the earth always warms up well. But mid-ripening and late-ripening varieties need to be planted in well-fertilized and fertile soil. Moreover, to grow cabbage, there should always be a lot of potassium, nitrogen and calcium in the ground. If there is a lot of humus on your site, then less fertilizers are needed, but when there is little humus, respectively, more fertilizers need to be applied.
If the soil on your site is too acidic, then you need to add either lime or ground chalk to the ground.
In general, all organic and mineral fertilizers for spring planting of cabbage must be applied in the fall. After harvesting, you need to dig up the ground to the depth of the bayonet of a bayonet shovel, and immediately after that fertilize. And in the spring, when the earth dries up, the entire area allotted for cabbage needs to be well loosened. And this is done so that moisture evaporates more slowly from the ground. For early ripe cabbage, the depth of spring loosening should be at least 15 cm. After loosen the earth, or dig it up on a new one, the earth must be leveled. Then you can mark the rows and dig holes. The required distance between the rows must be at least half a meter. For simple white cabbage, the depth of the holes should be about 15 cm, although the depth directly depends on the volume of soil on the roots and the root system itself. The day before the transplant, the seedlings must be shed well.
Planting cabbage in open ground: feeding
Organic fertilizers need to be added to the holes. For this, humus, compost, peat are great. Some of the fertilizers need to be applied to each well, about 0.5 kg. And also to organic fertilizers, you can add 5 grams of ammonium sulfate, potassium salt, ground chalk and 7 grams of superphosphate. If you do not have minerals, then it is fashionable to simply add 50 grams of wood ash to each hole. With the same success, instead of minerals and ash, you can add dry chicken droppings mixed with humus or earth to the holes. But it is not so necessary to apply fertilizers to the holes during planting, because all fertilizers can be added to the first feeding. During planting, pour a liter of water into each hole, preferably warm.If it is not possible to pour water into the holes during planting, then the growth point must be above ground level.
Planting cabbage in open ground with seedlings: in detail for different varieties and types
Seedlings color cabbages begin to be planted in open ground from the end of April. And you can plant it several times a season, until mid-July. Cauliflower should grow on a flat surface, not in a lowland, the distance between the bushes should be at least 30 cm, but between the rows there should be at least half a meter. For cauliflower, always use the same fertilizers as for white cabbage, and at the same dosage. Water it in the same amount, 1 liter of warm water for 1 hole with a plant.
Planting cabbage in open ground with seedlings: in detail for different varieties and types
Redhead cabbage is planted using the same technique as white cabbage. The distance between the cabbage should also be 30 cm between the holes and half a meter between the rows.
And here Savoy early cabbage is planted at the end of April, and medium late cabbage from mid to late May. Fertilizers in savoy cabbage are applied the same as in white cabbage, and the organic matter and minerals of this cabbage are needed in the same amount.
But for Brussels cabbage planting scheme is different. Between the holes there should be 60 cm, but between the rows at least 70. Moreover, it is not recommended to add fresh manure to this cabbage before planting, since the heads of cabbage will then be white, overgrown and more likely to be sick.
Broccoli planted at the very beginning of May, they do this in order to get the earliest possible harvest. If you are looking for a summer broccoli crop, planting may take until early June. But when you need an autumn harvest, then it should be planted from 1 to 10 July. The scheme for planting broccoli is the same as for white cabbage, the distance between the holes should be 30 cm, and between the rows 60 cm.
Chinese cabbage is grown mainly on a hill, that is, on the ridges. Moreover, the distance between the ridges should be at least 60 cm. It is planted immediately with seeds in a hole, while 3-4 seeds should be planted in one hole and about 5 grams of superphosphate granules should be added. When the seedlings rise and grow stronger, only 1 seedling is left in the hole, the rest are simply removed.
Beijing cabbage is planted only on greens, since it is very poorly and not stored for long. The scheme for this is tape, three-line. The distance between the tapes should be about 25 cm, and between the tapes - half a meter.
Peking cabbage is sown mainly with seeds directly into the open ground, because it does not like transplanting and it is very difficult to tolerate. But the seeds can be either dry or germinated. The depth of the seeds during planting should be no more than 2 cm. At least 1 liter of warm water should be poured into the hole and 3-4 seeds should be planted there. After the seedlings grow up, you need to leave one of the strongest and strongest seedlings, the rest just need to be removed. When planting Chinese cabbage on greens, the garden must be mulched. There are also head types of Peking cabbage, and they need to be sown outdoors in early July. If the seeds are sown earlier, then the cabbage itself will simply go to the arrow during growth, but if later, then the heads of cabbage will not have time to form well and are less dense, and the size of the head will be much smaller. During the preparation of the site for Peking cabbage, a lot of peat compost and wood ash must be added to the ground, only the ash must be clean, without impurities.
Planting cabbage kohlrabi: when you plant seedlings in open ground, no matter in what form, just with a lump of earth or immediately in a peat pot, the seedling needs to be firmly pressed down with earth. Such a planting is simply necessary so that it takes root faster, and soil capillaries recover faster at the roots, through which the plant is saturated with water. Also, with such a planting, new roots will form much faster. After planting a seedling, it is best to mulch the ground around it so that moisture from the ground evaporates as slowly as possible.
Dry peat, straw, humus, dry sawdust or dry leaves can be used as mulch. If the land on your site is heavy, then watering the holes before planting is not needed. But on light sandy soils, watering before planting is simply necessary. Although in early spring, even in such soils there is a sufficient amount of moisture. But all the same, watering is needed, because after planting the earth should be strongly tamped, and during planting you strongly tamp the aisles, and water always evaporates much faster from very dense soil. The very next day, if you look at your plantings, you will see that a crust has formed on the ground. And from such soil moisture evaporates much faster, but oxygen is practically not supplied to the roots. That is why it is necessary to regularly loosen the soil in the aisles after each watering, and sometimes it is advisable to spud the cabbage itself.
Any kind of cabbage must be properly planted in order to get a decent harvest. After all, it is planting that is the very first stage in the cultivation of cabbage, and this is followed by top dressing, the necessary watering, loosening, weeding and general care of the cabbage. But before planting cabbage, never forget that the site must be chosen correctly and it must be prepared in advance by digging up and adding the necessary fertilizers.
