Pear is a culture that, for some reason, is not found in gardens as often as apple trees. But many gardeners love pears and plant them with pleasure on their plots. Someone prefers to plant a pear in the spring, someone believes that planting pears in the fall is more reliable. We will tell you about how to properly plant a pear in the fall, so that in the future it will delight you with a delicious and bountiful harvest.
Planting pears in the fall: why do many people prefer it?
Correct planting of pears in the fall: video
Planting is, without a doubt, a very important step for a pear. This is not surprising, because landing, one might say, is the beginning of a “big life”. And this should be taken quite seriously, since the future harvest strongly depends on the correct planting. Why do many gardeners prefer planting pears in the fall? There are several reasons for this.
Firstly, it is good to choose planting material in the fall. It was at this time that young plants clearly show how the rhizome has developed, in what condition the wood is (in the fall, it undergoes a ripening process). Secondly, in the fall, a wide assortment of a wide variety of varieties is provided, besides, the cost for them is much lower than spring ones. As a rule, seedlings purchased in the fall adapt better. Thirdly, in the fall there is a greater likelihood that it will be possible to acquire seedlings of one or two years of age. It is believed that such plants take root faster. Fourthly, in the autumn, the soil with air is still well warmed up, and in this regard, there are much more chances for trees to root well. And, finally, fifthly, plants that were planted in the fall, as a rule, adapt better to new conditions, therefore, growth and development is more active.
Planting pears in the fall: when and how to plant?
It is believed that the best time to plant pears in the fall is from mid-September to mid-October. The most important thing is that the first frosts do not interfere with this event.
First you need to prepare the planting holes for the autumn planting of pears. However, some experienced gardeners prefer to plant pears without digging planting holes. If you have chosen the same method, then you will need to do the following. Where your pear will be located, you need to make small holes in the ground, they should correspond to the size of the plant's root system. In the ground, not too rich in essential substances, you need to dig out and prepare a hole for planting. It should be about a hundred centimeters wide and about sixty centimeters deep. After that, humus, superphosphate, wood ash and fertile soil must be added to the pit. Then place your plants in the pits and cover with soil. Then be sure to sprinkle it well with water.
To protect the root system of your young trees during the winter, sprinkle compost and peat around the pit. So that the root system is strengthened as soon as possible, and the tree does not suffer from the wind, install a peg support next to the seedling and tie the tree to it.
But before carrying out the autumn planting of pears in the ground, you need to seriously approach the choice of the place where the plants will be planted. This, one might say, is the key to a successful harvest in the future. Remember, the pear is bad for transplants, so it is better to immediately find a place for the constant growth of the plant. The pear is a rather thermophilic crop, which is negatively affected by low temperatures. For this reason, choose an area with a south or southeast exposure. Groundwater should be located at a sufficiently large distance from plantings, and the amount of sunlight should be high. Try to keep your pears safe from drafts and strong winds. Experienced gardeners advise to loosen the area before planting pears. This is necessary so that the soil can freely pass moisture and air.
With the correct planting of pears in the fall, maintain an interval between plants of three meters, no less. If a pear is planted near some buildings, a fence, then the distance to these objects should also be at least three meters. This is due to the powerful root system, which such obstacles can interfere with. In addition, the pear does not need extra shading.
To pollinate your trees better and more actively, you need to plant two or three varieties next to each other that differ from each other. Avoid planting a pear if your area is wet or the soil contains too much sand or limestone. Before planting the autumn planting of pears, be sure to fertilize the soil well with peat, river sand and compost (manure is also suitable). First you need to scatter everything over the site, and then dig up and loosen it. When applying fertilizers, the proportions must be calculated as follows: one cube of organic fertilizers is used per six square meters. Add sand there, also one cube (a layer of about fifteen centimeters). Do not forget to add a portion of mineral fertilizers. If your soil is too acidic, then you need to lime the soil. But be careful with this procedure, you also cannot overdo it with lime. Remember that in addition to the fertilizers you have applied, living organisms living in the upper layer of the soil play a huge role for the life of the plant. So, for example, thanks to earthworms, the soil becomes more nutritious, "breathing". In order to have more such useful inhabitants, you can bring them there additionally.
Planting pears in autumn: care after planting
Taking care of a pear after planting in the fall is not so difficult, it somehow echoes the care of apple trees. Pay special attention to whitewashing the trunks, do it at least twice a year. Whitewashed trees have less risk of sunburn, as well as being damaged by various pests.
For the winter, a thermophilic culture must be covered. You can use roofing material. But first you need to remove all the fallen leaves around the trees, remove the unharvested fruits from the branches. If there are dead branches, they must be removed with a pruner. Treat the wounds with a garden varnish. If you see that the bark is damaged somewhere, then leave only healthy parts, the damaged ones need to be cleaned off. An important requirement for pears is protection from rodents.
In the first year, no additional feeding is required, but in the second year, this procedure is already necessary. For this, they choose the autumn and spring time. Fertilizers based on minerals are applied annually in the fall. As for organics, once every three years will be enough.
You need to dig a groove around the trunk circle. This is where all the fertilizers are applied. After that, you need to dig up the soil well.
In autumn, fertilizers containing nitrogen should not be applied. Nitrogen provokes plant growth, and closer to winter it is not needed.
As for watering the pear, there are no particular difficulties here either. The pear is a fairly drought-resistant plant, but still these are extreme measures, and watering is still necessary. Make sure the area is always slightly damp. But keep in mind that if, after a long drought, you suddenly add a large amount of water, then there will be a risk that the fruits will crack. The approximate amount of water looks like this: two buckets of water for 1 year of a pear's life.It turns out that two buckets of water need to be added per year. You also need to know how to properly water the plants. It is necessary to do this not directly near the trunk, but as if along the perimeter of the crown. It is in this place that a large number of roots are located, which will contribute to the nutrition of your pear. Be sure to place the mulch in the trunk circle after watering to keep the moisture longer.
Make sure that the ground near the pears is always slightly moist. You also need to regularly loosen the soil and remove weeds. In order for the pears to receive the required amount of moisture, it is better to use the sprinkling method (watering is carried out using a spray that delivers water in the form of small drops).
There is another way of watering, for example, you can make grooves 15 - 20 centimeters wide. They should be around tree trunks.
How often should you water? This is a question that often worries gardeners. The situation is highly dependent on the weather. As a rule, two or three buckets are enough per season. However, if the weather is hot, dry, then watering can be done more often. Water along the perimeter of the crown, along the periphery. There are much more roots there than near the trunk itself.
A little about pruning after the autumn planting of pears
In the spring, you need to carry out the so-called "sanitary pruning". It is necessary to remove frozen, dried, broken branches. If you prune twice a year, you will save and form a beautiful crown of the correct shape. The first pruning is carried out in the second year of the tree's life. Removal of unnecessary shoots is carried out. At the same time, annual shoots should be shortened by one third of their original length. When you are engaged in the formation of the crown, strive for it to be similar in shape to a pyramid. Do not over-expand the crown, this can negatively affect the future harvest. The branches that you cut must be burned. This is necessary to get rid of pests.
With regard to pest control. In this regard, a pear is a rather delicate plant, you need to carefully monitor the condition of your plants. And if you see that there are signs of damage by diseases or harmful insects (leaves fall out of time, inflorescences stick together or dry, the leaves acquire a brown coating, or spots), you must take the necessary measures. But nevertheless, of course, it is easier to prevent these problems with preventive treatments than to treat the plants later.
If you carefully follow the simple rules for planting pears in the fall and caring for it, then a good result will not be long in coming, and the plant will be grateful to you for your care and will certainly give you a delicious and bountiful harvest.
