How often to water roses
Content:
Briefly about roses
Rose is a perennial culture from the wild rose genus. The queen of the garden is, of course, the rose. Roses in our country are very popular from the Crimea to the Far East, the restricted area is only the extreme north. Proper care and watering of roses makes it possible to grow them everywhere. Roses owe their distribution to their excellent appearance and the ability to decorate both a summer cottage and arrange a path to the house.
Caring for a rose on the site
Roses are quite demanding flowers and care will be needed throughout the year. Before planting, be sure to find the right territory for the seedlings. Priority should be given to areas that are well lit and not susceptible to wind. Groundwater close to the surface can kill the plant and should be avoided.
Well stratification
When preparing the hole, you must take into account its size, approximately six millimeters in diameter and half a meter in the thickness of the earth. It is possible and necessary to add fertilizing to the holes, you can use compost or soil soaked in minerals. Top dressing containing phosphorus and potassium is required before planting a seedling, as well as fifty grams of urea (saltpeter). The location of the graft above or at the level of the ground is unacceptable, the mark should be six centimeters lower, thanks to which the seedling will not freeze.
Watering roses and mulching
After the seedling has been planted, the land needs to be well watered and mulched. We must be prepared that the plants will need high-quality watering throughout the season. You fertilized the soil before planting the seedling, so additional fertilization will need to be given from the fourth year of life. Fertilizers will be needed twice a season. Nitrogen-containing fertilizers are used for growth with the onset of spring, the second portion is fertilizers with phosphorus and potassium, they are applied at the end of summer.
Pruning rules
In November-December, the plants are sanitized and covered with insulation until spring. For a dry winter, roses will need a film cover. It is not worth covering the plants too early, the ideal moment will come when the temperature at night stays at minus six degrees.
Interesting! Selection does not stand still and in stores you can see hybrid species that can withstand very severe frosts without shelter.
Watering roses: how often?
Of course, watering is required for roses. Now you will learn how to water roses so that they grow well and have beautiful flowers.
The most important thing for a plant is soil and watering directly depends on its type. If the sandy component prevails, which does not hold moisture well, watering will be required more often. With clay soils, the effect is the opposite, they keep moisture well. Humus or compost should be applied before planting the seedling to make the soil less hard, in the case of clay soils. Roses are not very fond of clay.
Also, when choosing an irrigation regime, climatic conditions are important. Watering can never be overused. During cool weather and heavy rains, experts recommend stopping watering altogether. In hot weather, plants will need more moisture, but not too much.
In case of problems in quantities after watering, it is better to mulch the soil. The role of mulch can be played by sawdust, compost, and so on. At normal temperatures, during the day, roses are watered once every seven days, with small droughts, once every three days.
In windy periods, it is better to increase watering. The wind can dry out the soil.
The younger the plant, the more watering it needs.Young plants have not yet grown a good rhizome. Small roots are close to the soil surface and need more watering. In case of insufficient watering at a young age, the plant may die. Gradually, the roots will grow and the number of waterings can be reduced.
As with age, the watering “equation” works with size. It's very simple, large bushes require more life-giving water. Moreover, if the bush in the adult state is rather sprawling, then it will require more watering than in its "youth". On average, about ten liters of water should go to one plant at a time, one bucket - one seedling. An adult bush will require about thirty to forty liters, which is equal to three to four buckets.
Spring and autumn watering
With the onset of spring and more warm weather, the plants begin to bloom. For big and beautiful buds in the future, you need to water the roses enough. If watering is insufficient, the flowers will be invisible and ugly, sometimes they even dry out and die. It is recommended to water roses in mid-spring. On average, watering is carried out once every nine days.
Since autumn is the preparation of plants for winter, watering should be appropriate. Watering is needed more than in the fall and summer. Often, but depending on the climate, the dose of water for one irrigation is doubled.
When freezing temperatures are recorded, watering should be stopped until April.
Watering roses with cold water
Important! Roses love warmth. Not only the heated soil is important, but also the water heated by the sun. In the case of these beautiful plants, hose watering, as many do, is unacceptable. Roses are very delicate and cold water can only harm the plantings. This can end with illness, less often death.
Watering rules in open areas
Less often, but more. It is rare but strong watering that contributes to better root growth, and not many insignificant ones.
The nozzle on the watering can is important. Water should not flow in one stream, there should be a shower or rain effect. When watering with a hose (heated water), do not use a strong water pressure to avoid damaging the roses.
Watering should be carried out rather slowly, even with short pauses, so that the water has time to be absorbed into the soil and does not stagnate.
Since it is usually cooler at night, it is best to water the roses in the morning to avoid the development of parasites and diseases. It is important to carry out the procedure before the onset of heat. Various types of mold and black spot can develop at night.
Tips
There is a special way to determine how much the plants need watering, according to the condition of the soil. Not far from the bush, a hole of ten centimeters is dug, if the soil is dry, good watering is needed. If your garden queens are growing in pots, the watering should be slightly higher due to the faster drying of the potted soil.
Mulching is good and bad to forget. Mulch helps to retain moisture, but not stagnation. When using it, the number of waterings can be slightly reduced. It is important to change the raw material of the mulch - in the spring.
If you follow all the recommendations, you will be able to grow a beautiful plant. Roses will have large and beautiful flowers that can always be shown to friends.
