Useful tips for tying your crops
Content:
Many summer residents are familiar with the situation when the crops grown, progressing in growth more and more, begin to lurch, interfere with each other, or even break down altogether. In some species, fragile stems are noted, the safety of which also needs to be thought about. Unfortunately, nature is not always able to dispose of properly and should be helped artificially. Consider the methods, as well as materials for such a necessary process as the garter of garden plants.
Garter meaning
Many crops should be tied to protect them from strong wind currents that can cause serious damage and death to crops. This becomes extremely important for areas with an unstable climate, so plants simply need additional protection and strengthening. But do not rush to arrange the frame and carry out the garter ahead of time! If for annual plants this procedure can be carried out at the initial stage of cultivation, then before tying perennials, you should wait for the moment to increase the shoots. Some crops must achieve sufficient development, otherwise, restricting their capabilities, you can cause irreparable damage to the root system and slow down its growth.
What kind of garter methods are there?
First of all, the garter procedure follows the installation of the main support structure - a peg or trellis, the design and arrangement of which we will consider a little later.
This is followed by the selection of a suitable tool. The following options are offered: twine, wire, tapener or tapner. Many people are probably unfamiliar with the latter, so you should sort it out in order.
Twine - is an extremely strong and durable thread, the most popular tool among gardeners along with wire. In modern times, it is made using polypropylene, which provides high strength, resistance to repeated bending, as well as a variety of weather conditions. Being an environmentally friendly material, modern twine, in turn, does not undergo the process of decay, even after prolonged use on crops.
Wire - some gardeners use wire to tie crops in the garden, which is also an excellent alternative to twine, in some cases even more reliable. But here you should correctly approach the choice - the most suitable, in order to avoid the problem with rust, is a wire with the use of polyester in the composition, so be sure to take note of this. The advantages of wire are flexibility and the fact that it can hold its shape without bending back.
And finally, the tapener (tapner) is a modern device developed by Japanese engineers relatively recently, taking into account the greatest number of points of reliability and comfort in use. It is something similar to an ordinary stationery stapler with the function of automatically feeding the garter tape, cutting it when the right amount has been applied. The user is only required to be careful and attentive in operation and refueling. The entire tying process takes less than one second, which is ideal for large-scale vegetable gardens when there is not enough time to cover the entire volume using twine or wire.
Separately, a less popular, but interesting device for plant garters should be highlighted: a clip.It is made of plastic, has an extremely uncomplicated design and is somewhat reminiscent of an ordinary paper clip. Plants can be strengthened in this way both vertically and horizontally. To prevent the device from slipping, special notches are provided, which, however, do not in any way injure the culture being strengthened.
Plant garter: Tying frame
As already described above, for maximum effect, garters are best used in conjunction with the main frame for greater reliability of the entire structure. If everything is already clear with ordinary pegs, then what are trellises?
Tapestries - wood structures designed to support the stems / branches of a climbing plant. Tapestries are divided into decorative and technical. If the latter do not require special preparation and are created mainly to support plants, then many summer residents are already beginning to experiment with decorative ones, creating, say, whole walls of plants on their territory. Since these are load-bearing structures, trellises can also be transported from place to place without fear for the overall composition. Lattice trellises are very popular, combining elements of wood and plastic in their design. The price of materials can also vary.
One way or another, the tying and strengthening of plants is the most important process in those cases when crops grow, scatter stems and leaves, there is a threat of kinks and fractures. Who would have thought that non-compliance with such a seemingly uncomplicated process could lead to the death of a painstakingly grown vegetable garden? Do not let this happen, tie up the heavy stems in a timely manner - be careful and do not be lazy!
