Pest control of cabbage: the most common cabbage pests
Pest control of cabbage: the most common cabbage pests
Absolutely all gardeners grow cabbage, but it is a little difficult to grow a large cabbage crop. And all due to the fact that she is full of pests. by itself, cabbage is very attractive to various insects. Therefore, when you decide to grow cabbage, you simply have to know how and at what stage of cabbage development you need to deal with them. Cabbage has a lot of pests, there are more than 30 species, but they are all divided into only 2 groups: soil pests are those pests that affect the root system of the seedling.
Ground-soil are those that damage cabbage foliage and plant stems.
The main pests that are very difficult to get rid of are: Cruciferous flea, Cabbage aphid, Whitefly, Cabbage caterpillar, Turnip whitefly, Medvedka and Cabbage fly, or rather its larvae.
The cabbage fly can easily harm the plant in spring and summer. She does not lay her eggs directly on the cabbage, but in the ground next to the leaves. And when insects emerge from the larvae, they get to the roots and damage them.
Cabbage moth, Belyanka and Scoop are all butterflies that lay their larvae directly on the leaves, most often starting from the bottom. When caterpillars hatch from eggs, they eat up the cabbage leaves, getting deeper and deeper into the head of cabbage, thereby damaging it.
Aphids also appear very often in cabbage. Basically, this pest affects early and cauliflower. If it appears on one plant, it just instantly spreads throughout the cabbage plantation. If aphids hit the leaves of the plant, then they stop growing and begin to curl towards the center. But when it appears on cauliflower and broccoli, it will climb inside between the inflorescences, and it will be extremely difficult to get it out of there.

Cabbage pest treatment: folk remedies for cabbage pests
Folk remedies just need to be used for early maturing and collard greens. Indeed, due to the fact that their maturation period is very short, they simply cannot be treated with chemicals. Basically, it is better to deal with pests in advance, that is, by conducting prevention. Here, late-ripening cabbage with chemicals can be safely treated with chemicals, because until it ripens, all the toxins will have time to come out.
Collard greens or Chinese cabbage are especially tempting for insects. They are attracted by the fact that it has very soft, juicy and tasty leaves. Cruciferous fleas and slugs appear especially on this cabbage. You need to fight them when they just appeared, because when they get to the core of the head of cabbage, it will be impossible to get rid of them. The plant in this case will be very quickly and completely destroyed. From flea beetles, after planting, the plants need to be sprinkled with wood ash, and if you want to prevent the invasion of slugs, then cover the plants with foil. With the same success, a soap-ash infusion helps well against aphids and caterpillars:
1 tbsp. a spoonful of ash must be poured with 1 liter of boiling water. Stir this solution well and leave to infuse overnight. In the morning, strain the infusion and add a little liquid soap to it.Mix everything again and early in the morning, no later than 7 o'clock, completely process all the plants, it is especially important that the infusion gets well on the lower leaves of the plant. It is necessary to process seedlings with this infusion several times, repeating the procedure every other day.
A decoction is perfect for Peking and Chinese cabbage from aphids: 300 grams of sifted wood ash is poured with 2 liters of water and boiled for 20 minutes. Then the solution should cool and settle. After that, it should be filtered and diluted with 10 liters of warm water and sprayed on the plants.
This solution can also be used for other plants affected by aphids. Sprinkling wood ash around the plant will help prevent slug infestation. But you need to sprinkle the ground constantly, because when the ash gets wet, it no longer scares away slugs. By the way, it is very effective to alternate sprinkling with ash and sprinkling the ground with red pepper.
Before planting cabbage, be sure to remember that cabbage cannot be planted in the same place where cruciferous plants grew in the previous year. In this case, the land is almost always already infected with pests, which will easily and very quickly spoil your entire future harvest.
Experienced gardeners also advise: in order to save the plants from the invasion of the cabbage fly, you need to cover the ground around the bush with a film.
In order to protect the heads of cabbage from butterflies, also covering them with a film. But if, nevertheless, butterflies appeared, then they need to be treated with chemicals, but only those that are allowed during this period of cabbage growth, well, or collect the caterpillars by hand.
you need to get rid of the caterpillars as soon as they appear. Because if they manage to damage the heads of cabbage, then they will be much worse stored, and will be very easily exposed to various diseases.
Planting plants with a strong, pungent odor next to the cabbage will help scare off pests. For this, wormwood, mint and other similar plants are perfect.
Also, pests will be scared off by the very pungent smell of ammonia. After it, absolutely any insects and aphids will disappear from the cabbage. This solution requires 1 bottle of ammonia, 50 ml. dilute in 10 liters of water and spray the cabbage from a spray bottle, for the best effect, so that the solution hits the whole plant well, you can pour it from above from a watering can.
Herbal decoction also fights well with aphids. Tomato tops, dandelions, wormwood, onion husks, garlic and some laundry soap. Heads of cabbage need to be processed well with this mixture.
It also helps to cover the cabbage with a film from the invasion of slugs, or simply sprinkle the ground with wood ash, the ash will also add potassium to the ground.
To scare away the cabbage fly, you can sprinkle the ground with a dry mixture. 100 g of wood ash, 100 g of tobacco dust, 1 teaspoon of ground red pepper. This mixture must be scattered on the ground and loosened to a depth of about three centimeters. This should be done several times with an interval of 4 days. To destroy the white butterfly, you need to process the cabbage with this solution: 2 tbsp. tablespoons of dry mustard, 2 tbsp. tablespoons of salt, 1 teaspoon of ground black or red pepper, 1 tbsp. spoon of liquid soap, and all this must be diluted in 10 liters of warm water. The cruciferous flea is a very small insect. It eats up the entire soft part of the cabbage leaf; treatment with a 0.2% trichloromethane solution every 10 days will help get rid of it.
You can also get rid of the cabbage fly by spilling the soil around the plant with a 0.2% solution of "Karbofos". Processing with this solution also needs to be carried out 1 time in 10 days.
How to choose a remedy for pests of cabbage from insecticides
Insecticides are chemicals used to control insects and pests. Insecticides are divided into several groups, and it depends on how they are fed into the organisms of pests: Intestinal, Contact, Systemic and Fumigants - this is a respiratory method.
But for the most part, insecticides are mainly intestinal. All these drugs must be used strictly following all the rules and instructions.
Each drug has its own insect-damaging substance:
Deltamethrin - combats the cabbage scoop, whiteworm and cruciferous flea beetles. This substance is found in such preparations as: "Decis Profi", "VDG", "FAS", "TFB".
Diazimon - fights cabbage fly and bear. To be in preparations: "Barguzin", "Grizzly", "Thunder", "Thunder-2", "Zemlin", "Medvegon", "Medvetox".
Malathion - fights with whitefly, scoop, cabbage moth and fly, aphids, thrips and whitefly. For this there are such drugs as: "Karbofos-500", "Iskra M", "Fufanon-Nova".
It is possible to process cabbage from caterpillars with biological products only when the larvae are still very small. Because when the larvae grow up, these drugs no longer cope with them.
Cabbage is always grown as seedlings. And it is the newly planted young plants that can suffer the most from the cruciferous flea. So the best protection for young plants would be peat pot transplantation. Moreover, before transplanting, it is imperative to follow the timing when the bulk of the cruciferous flea has already passed.
Fleas begin their activity from the end of April, and throughout May. Therefore, it is best to plant seedlings in open ground in June. In this case, the seedlings will grow faster than the one that was planted earlier, and if they also suffered from fleas. During the main growth of cabbage heads, many insects damage it, but almost every insect has its own entomophage. An entomophage is a predator insect that exterminates a pest insect. In order to attract entomophages to your site, you need to plant pleasantly smelling flowers and herbs. Ladybugs, parasites, ground beetles and other insects will flock to this blooming, fragrant meadow, which will easily overcome all pests. For example. Of the herbs, the entomophage attracts the best: dill, anise, coriander, phacelia, fennel, legumes.
Those plants that produce nectar should be planted along the cabbage patch. After all, the radius of destruction of pests in entomophages reaches 50 meters. If the grass begins to bloom early, then it can be sown twice per season. If you sow herbs while planting cabbage, and sow the second layer after two weeks, then herbs will smell throughout the season. Also, if you regularly loosen the soil in the aisles of plantings, then the larvae of scoops and whites will be destroyed. Especially often this should be done at the very beginning of July, then the pests will simply go away. Pesticides should be used only as a last resort, critical case and very urgently. They are used only when there are a lot of pests.
If you correctly use folk remedies for prevention, then such protection gives up to 70% of the result. And only the remaining 30% is treated with pesticides and similar agents.
But not all plants are treated with these drugs, but only selectively, on which there are pests. Because of insects, slugs and other pests, it is difficult to grow a high-quality cabbage crop, so you need to know how to deal with them. Moreover, you definitely need to know what exactly you need to use in each period of cabbage growth. The best possible care and destruction of insects occurs when you use folk remedies, because some of them not only help in the fight against pests, but also do an excellent job of fertilizing the soil.
