DIY mini-garden: place preparation
Let us assume that you do not have a personal farm, and the peasant vein is increasingly asserting itself. Or, your child has aroused interest in what, from what and how it grows. It couldn't be easier - arrange a mini-vegetable garden on the windowsill!
Yes, you can't get a big harvest from a mini-garden, but believe me - the process will captivate you, and the result will delight you. And a salad made from self-grown products will be especially delicious.
First of all, we choose a place. Most likely it will be a kitchen window sill - usually the humidity in the kitchen is higher, it is light and warm, so the place is perfect. Of course, the owner of the glazed loggias has where to turn around, but now we will talk about the option on the windowsill.
We have decided on a place to create a mini-vegetable garden, now we select plants. In stores, you can now buy seeds of absolutely any crops, both familiar and exotic.
If you decide to experiment, choose anything, but if you started a garden with your child, then it is better to dwell on those crops that are guaranteed to grow in order to avoid frustration and disappointment in the future.
In order not to violate the aesthetics of the space, you need to take care of pots or boxes in advance, since plantings in boxes and cups will not decorate the interior of your kitchen.
Be sure to pour drainage on the bottom of the containers, and mix the nutrient soil with the hydrogel - this way the soil will retain moisture longer. Now that everything is ready, let's select the plants.
Mini greenery garden
The easiest to grow green onions for a mini-garden on the windowsill. You can buy planting material at a specialty store or plant medium-sized onions from the vegetable department.
In any case, the harvest will be, and by the end of the first week you can add a green onion to the morning eggs. If you decide to plant onion sets, then the crops need to be renewed periodically, as small onions are quickly depleted.
Dill and parsley can be grown from seeds. The harvest will have to wait a month or a month and a half, but it will take a long time to update and by planting seeds in the spring, you will be able to collect fresh greens before winter.
There is also another way. Now supermarkets sell herbs in pots with a root system. Such bushes are not stored in the refrigerator for a long time, but if you cut off the greens and plant the roots in a prepared container, in a few days new young leaves will appear.
Thus, parsley, cilantro, basil, lettuce and mint may appear in your garden (this is a list of what has been verified by our own experience!).
Tomatoes and peppers for the garden on the windowsill
Let's move on to more complex crops, cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers. You can grow cucumbers, but in case of insufficient lighting, the lashes stretch out and do not look very beautiful, so it is better to give preference to tomatoes and peppers - the bushes are compact and look more decorative.
Choose undersized varieties with medium-sized fruits. For growing a mini-vegetable garden on the windowsill, the varieties of tomatoes "Balconnoe Miracle", "Dubok", "Ruby Red" are suitable. All of them do not exceed a height of 60cm and feel great at home. Peppers "Treasure Island", "Dwarf", "Aquarelle" will also delight you with their fruits.
The main difficulty in growing these crops is that during flowering you will have to help the plants with the pollination process - gently shake the tomato bushes several times. Most peppers are self-pollinated. Both tomatoes and peppers take a long time to grow, but the result is worth it!
What else? You can plant beans, peas or beans in a mini-garden - in any case, it will be beautiful! I had experience with growing pumpkins and zucchini on the balcony - everything was limited to beautiful orange flowers.
As an experiment in a large container, you can try to grow beets, carrots or even a potato bush - it will be interesting!
