Content:
Of course, lemon is a healthy fruit; citrus lovers adore it and use it everywhere. But, what's the point of buying lemons in stores if you can grow a lemon on the windowsill right at home and consume this fruit without leaving your home? Now we will find out!
Rules you need to know for planting lemon on a windowsill
As we know, lemon has seeds. Lemon trees are grown from these seeds.
Here are the rules to know when choosing a lemon in the store:
- Choose the ripe and yellowest lemon.
- It is necessary to select several large seeds - about ten pieces.
Lemon on the windowsill: varieties for growing at home
There are over 150 different varieties of lemon in the world. I have collected several species that you can grow right at home.
- Lisbon - a variety that is resistant to low and high temperatures. The tree bears fruit very well, up to sixty fruits per year. There are almost no seeds, the lemon itself has a juicy, slightly sour pulp taste.
- Oval di Sorento Is a variety that originated in Italy. The fruits of this species are shaped like an egg. The tree itself is tall and strong enough.
- Meyer (or Chinese lemon) is a species whose trees are not very large up to 2-3 meters. Fruits are round in shape, almost without a sour taste. The peel is yellow-orange. Bears fruit a lot and early.
- Eureka - a kind in which the fruit is not very large, but insanely sour with a very rich taste and aroma. There are very few seeds, almost none. The fruit has a fairly dense and large peel. The crop can give all year round.
- Monacello - another variety with a small amount of seeds, sometimes which is not at all. The tree is of medium height, the flesh is quite soft, has a delicate taste. The shape resembles an avocado. The variety has good resistance to the dangerous disease - Malsecco.
- Anniversary - a species that gives a rich harvest. The fruit has a dense and strong skin.
After choosing a variety, you need to plant the lemon seed itself in a pot.
Lemon on the windowsill: landing
It is recommended to plant lemons in late February or early March. It is believed that it is at this time that the fruits will feel good and germinate easily. This is due to the fact that the sunny days are getting longer.
Some experienced gardeners who like to grow lemons at home on the windowsill say that the top husk from the seed can be removed. They believe this will help the lemon grow faster. You can, of course, do without it, but it depends on you.
Place the seeds in water the day before planting and do not remove them. Now you need to take a small pot with a shallow depth and pour earth into it. Choose a pot that has several small holes in the bottom. They will drain excess water that the plant does not need.
If you have not found such a pot, just make the holes yourself, using a punch with a small diameter drill. By the way, it should be borne in mind that every year you will need to change the pot and take a couple of diameters larger than the previous one. This is due to the fact that the tree is constantly growing and needs more space.
After that, two centimeters of coarse sand should be put on the bottom of our pot. Now we will put our bones there. Consider the depth, because if the depth is more than two centimeters, you will see a rather bad result.
Caring for lemons on the windowsill
Lemon is a rather capricious nature and needs special care. First, you need to spray the ground every three days. It is sometimes worth watering as soon as the soil becomes very dry. A pot of lemon should be placed in a well-lit place and sprinkled with water at room temperature.
Please note that the lemon at home on the windowsill should be transplanted carefully and no more than twice a year.
It is also necessary to feed the plant with mineral fertilizers. This should be done in the summer.
It should be said about pests and diseases. Lemons are easily susceptible to various diseases, even at home. To prevent this, you should spray the leaves of the plant, sometimes water the plant with hot water.
