When to transplant rowan
Content:
Rowan is a tall, frost-resistant tree with rich orange-red berries. The fruits are knitted with bitterness, their appearance is attractive to most birds, for this reason the tree perfectly protects other plants. You can plant rowan on your own, and it is also possible to transplant rowan from the forest.
Rowan transplant in autumn
The timing of planting in the autumn season can be determined by the climatic conditions of the growing region.
In Central Russia, the optimal time for landing is from September 15th to October 15th.
In the south, planting is best done from early October to early November.
In the north, the best time is September-early October.
In the Siberian and Ural regions, it is most acceptable to plant in the autumn season, since the spring season in these territories is unstable, frosts or intense heat may occur. And the autumn season passes with good temperature conditions and an optimal amount of precipitation.
Rowan, like most other tree crops, is planted after the foliage has fallen.
If the planting time is skipped, the seedling is preserved until the spring season. In this situation, it is worth using the methods below, one of them is selected.
Store in the basement
The root system is lowered into a container containing moistened peat, sand and sawdust.
In the underground, optimal conditions must be maintained (temperature regime within zero-ten degrees, humidity level - eighty-five-ninety percent).
The roots are moistened with an additional volume of water once every 7 days.
Dig in
A hole of great depth is dug, the root system is placed in it at an angle of forty-five degrees.
Then it is buried in a wet mixture containing sand and peat.
Snow
The seedling is wrapped with a moistened fabric material and buried in the snow. In this situation, temperature conditions that are comfortable for him will remain.
When using the latter method, make sure that the plant does not become exposed, and the snow layer is constantly thickened.
Transplanting rowan in the fall to a new place: pros and cons
Pros:
- Plants can be purchased at low cost in the fall.
- In the autumn, the seedlings will be fresh. For this reason, a good assessment of their health and the quality of both the leaves and the root system can be made.
- Planting in the fall presents fewer problems. You will not need to always check the soil moisture index. All this will be done by the natural environment.
- Young trees planted in the fall will begin to grow two to three weeks earlier than when planted in the spring.
- Plus, most gardeners love the fact that it saves time. In the autumn period there are few gardening activities, but spring is considered the most "busy" season.
Minuses:
- Due to frosty periods in the winter season, the roots and trees may freeze slightly.
- In addition, the health of the plant may deteriorate due to strong winds. Young branches may break off.
- Rodents cause harm, they can damage mountain ash late in the fall.
Planting rowan. Rules
For the successful passage of the planting of mountain ash in the autumn period and its quick survival in the new plot, summer residents with experience adhere to important rules.
- The seedlings should look perfect. If there is a twisting of the root system, then the survival rate of the mountain ash will be longer and not so successful, it will have to be planted before the cold snap.
- When purchasing planting material with closed roots or a special mesh, you do not need to get rid of them.
- If you missed the planting time in the fall, then the planting is postponed to the spring.
- There should not be an excess of dressings.
- Rowan is not fed with manure, as burns and damage to young roots can occur.
- Young mountain ash is getting ready for the cold season.
- A tree planted in the autumn season is tied to a support to prevent it from swaying and breaking during gusty winds.
Planting rowan in the autumn
Planting in autumn differs from planting in spring in a large number of indicators. For survival and good growth of a tree that is planted before the cold season comes, important rules must be followed.
How to choose seedlings
Before starting planting, you need to buy healthy planting material.
- The roots should be moist, intact, with three to four main branches, and should be twenty-five to thirty cm long.
- When the seedling is overdried, the bark wrinkles.
- Crown development should also be good enough. It needs to have a main conductor and main branches.
When you transport the planting material, its root system is wrapped with a damp cloth and placed in polyethylene.
How to prepare a seedling for planting
Before planting a plant, all overdried and damaged branches are removed, as well as with regards to the root system of the tree.
To moisturize the roots well, they are placed in a clay mash for two to three hours.
All leaves are removed in order for the mountain ash to direct all efforts to survival in a new area.
Rowan transplant and planting: how to choose a site
The rowan is unpretentious and can take root on different types of soil. For the best growth and fruiting of the plant, the following rules must be observed.
The optimal soil is loam or sandy loam. The soil should be loose and neutral; it is desirable that a drainage layer be made using expanded clay.
The tree is very light-loving, for this reason the place is not selected in the shade.
The soil must be moist without fail. It is recommended that groundwater runs below one and a half meters from the ground surface. In general, culture can grow at their higher passage.
The rowan tree is planted at intervals of four to five meters from the rest of the crops. Approximately two to three weeks before planting, a planting hole is prepared for planting.
A hole is dug into the depths of forty to fifty cm, the diameter depends on the size of the roots of the plant. The nutrient-rich soil combines with components such as compost fertilizer or humus (bucket), superphosphate (150 g), wood ash (300 g). The planting pit is covered by 1/3 of the soil substrate. Further, up to ½ of the hole, ordinary soil is poured.
Transplanting rowan under the open sky
Before planting, water (bucket) is poured into the prepared hole and you need to wait for it to be absorbed. Next, a seedling is installed there, carefully straightening the roots. The root collar should rise five to seven cm above the surface soil layer. When filling the hole, it is advisable to lightly shake the tree to fill all air voids.
After planting the plant, the trunk circle is carefully tamped and watered abundantly. In conclusion, it is required to mulch the trunk circle with humus or peat.
Agrotechnics after planting
For the correct formation of mountain ash, good growth, health and development, it is required to carry out competent care for it during the first years. To this end, the following rules must be followed.
- During the first two to three years, fertilizers are not applied, since there are enough nutrients that were introduced during the planting period. The exception is nitrogen to stimulate the growth of mountain ash. Plants are fed with nitrogen fertilizers from the second year of planting.
- Water one tree with two or three buckets of water. Watering is carried out four to five times a year. If there is a lot of precipitation in summer, then watering is left in autumn and spring. After each watering, the soil is mulched.
- Irrigation is done in grooves or special grooves.
- In the fall, the trunk circle is dug into the depth of ten to fifteen cm. All season the soil of the trunk circle must be kept clean and loose.
Preparing mountain ash for the winter season
Only the planted mountain ash does not have time to fully become strong before the cold period sets in, for this reason it must be prepared for the winter season. For this purpose, certain work is being done.
The trunk is wrapped with burlap, after which they are insulated with spruce branches.
The bottom of the trunk must be additionally protected, it is buried with snow, make sure that the level of snow does not become less and does not expose the trunk.
In order to avoid burns caused by the sun, the trunk is whitewashed without fail.
Protect the trunk from rodents with specialized poisons scattered in the near-trunk circle.
Rowan transplant. Rules
When transplanting a young tree (age - up to four to five years), the same actions are performed and identical rules are followed as for the first planting. Transplanting will differ in that it is necessary to dig the tree from the ground ourselves. When excavating, do not forget that mountain ash has a very branched root system, it is extremely undesirable to damage it.
If you transplant adult specimens, then the following rules are observed:
- The optimal time is late in the fall, when the mountain ash is in a dormant period.
- Temperature conditions during the day should be minus one to three degrees, at night - minus fifteen degrees, no less.
- The culture must grow up to three meters or more, otherwise it will be difficult to replant.
- The tree is dug out very carefully. First, a ditch is made around the circumference of the trunk, its radius is approximately one meter. Next, you need to carefully remove the soil, and large roots are cut. The easiest way to get the mountain ash out of the hole is to use the levers.
The soil lump that has formed on the roots is necessarily preserved. For this purpose, it is wrapped in burlap and laid out on a large thickness of film material or on a sheet of iron. Next, the mountain ash is dragged to a new site.
The best soil coma for a ten-year-old mountain ash is one meter across and sixty cm deep.
The pit for planting should exceed the size of the soil coma by forty cm. A drainage layer 5 cm thick is laid at the bottom of the pit, including expanded clay, soil and snow. This procedure is repeated three times. After that, the mountain ash falls into the hole and is carefully buried.
Further, the soil is compacted and mulched well.
In order to avoid the death of a plant in a new area, its direction to the cardinal points is preserved.
Transplanting rowan in the autumn season is the best time. The plant has excellent tolerance to frosty periods in winter. In addition, trees planted in the fall show rapid growth, therefore, the fruits can be reaped early.
