Many strawberry lovers who grow this crop on their plots are aware of the fact that varieties and hybrids successfully grown, say, in Italy, Holland, do not always give the same chic result in our climatic zones. There are not many varieties that are able to please us with a harvest no worse than in warm countries, but they are still there. Strawberry Corona is among them.
Strawberry Crown: variety description
Native to the strawberry Corona from Holland, it was bred about 40 years ago.
The strawberry variety Korona copes well with frost, which makes it suitable for cultivation in Russia. Of course, this is not the only plus of the Crown.
It should be noted that the Korona strawberry has been quite popular among farmers since 1972. It has many positive features. And many gardeners prefer to plant not new varieties on the plots, but the time-tested Crown.
The Korona strawberry variety was born thanks to the crossing of Tamella and Induki. They just gave the Corona the ability to calmly endure low temperatures.
Strawberry Crown can withstand frosts down to -22 degrees. This property makes this variety suitable for cultivation throughout Russia. Unless in regions with very fierce winters, shelter in the form of greenhouses and greenhouses is required.
In terms of ripening, this variety is medium early. As a rule, the fruits begin to ripen together in the fifteenth of June. Strawberry Crown bears fruit for a rather long period. The berries can be harvested for several weeks.
As a rule, this variety propagates using tendrils, but sometimes gardeners use vegetative and seed methods. The bushes of the Korona strawberry variety are not too tall, however, they have a powerful and rather spreading shape.
The foliage on the bushes of the strawberry variety Crown is quite strong in structure. The surface has a gloss, the sheet is large in size. The berries are not the largest, rather medium in size, reaching about 25 grams in weight.
The fruit is shaped like a cone, sometimes a heart. The Korona strawberry variety has a beautiful deep red color, sometimes fading into burgundy.
The upper part of the berries is shiny, smooth in texture. To taste, this variety has excellent qualities: the berries are sweet, juicy, fleshy with a pleasant refreshing sourness.
The strawberry variety Korona has a high yield. From one plant, you can get about one kilogram of fruit. Agronomists who grow this variety for commercial purposes usually receive 14-15 tons per hectare of land.
Strawberry Crown has a fairly strong immunity, is practically not affected by spotted mosaics, as well as harmful insects. This variety perfectly tolerates cold temperatures. It is not necessary to cover the crown, unless it is required in very cold regions of Russia.
According to the scope of application, this variety is referred to as universal. Berries are eaten fresh, straight from the branch. Also, the fruits are well suited for a variety of dishes and preparations for the winter. Corona is often used to make wine and liqueurs.
This variety has many positive qualities, otherwise it would not have been in demand among gardeners for a long time. The crown begins to ripen quite early, and at the same time gives berries of excellent taste and aroma.
Strawberry Crown fruits are suitable both for eating fresh and for processing. This variety is quite unpretentious in care, while showing a decent result in yield. The crown easily tolerates low temperatures.
At the same time, in addition to the advantages, of course, it also has a number of negative aspects. So, for example, the inside of the berries has a too delicate and soft structure. For this reason, such strawberries are poorly suited for long-term storage and transportation over long distances.
The Korona strawberry variety is also not suitable for freezing. Plants are not very resistant to white spot and gray mold.
It is not very suitable for the sale of berries for commercial purposes, because with a long sale, storage and transportation, the fruits will not be able to maintain a presentable appearance.
Strawberry variety Crown: planting varieties
Of course, outdoor conditions are not ideal for the Korona strawberry variety. She, like all other varieties of this culture, refers to heat-loving plants. Therefore, of course, it is better to choose greenhouse cultivation.
But with all this, many gardeners are very active in planting strawberries in an open area and at the same time get a very good result. It is important to know about the rules for planting and caring for not the simplest strawberry bushes.
The Korona strawberry variety is not very positive about hot and dry weather. For this reason, bushes can sometimes fall out.
An important point in growing the Korona strawberry variety is the right choice of planting site. It is good if beans or cereals were growing on the site before. After their growth, the earth acquires a loose structure. And the chemical composition is disinfected.
Also virgin soil, the land on which nothing was grown before, is well suited for planting strawberries. Before planting strawberries, be sure to dig the soil to the depth of a shovel bayonet, or use a walk-behind tractor for this purpose.
In general, for planting strawberries, plots of land on which nothing has been grown for one or two years can be easily approached.
When choosing a place for planting strawberry bushes, keep in mind that plants do not like too hot weather and severe frosts. Therefore, give preference to land that is protected from winds and drafts.
In this case, the site should have a sufficient amount of sunlight, however, be careful with this, do not allow the scorching sun. In the selected area, the snow cover should be well preserved. Since your plants need it for shelter from low temperatures in winter.
The composition of the soil does not play any huge role for strawberries. However, the result will be more pleasing if the selected area has not heavy soil, which contains the required amount of nutrients, and also retains moisture well.
Be sure to fertilize before planting your plants. Usually humus is used for these purposes, as well as various minerals: phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen. It will not be superfluous if you still powder your soil with wood ash.
When choosing the time to plant the Korona strawberry variety, as a rule, they prefer the beginning of May. You can also plant strawberries in the first half of August until the end of September.
It is best to choose the evening hours or morning for planting strawberries of the Crown variety. Just cloudy weather is suitable for these purposes. Strawberry seedlings should have a healthy appearance and a strong root system.
Each plant should have four to five leaves. They should be dense in texture, with a shine. The rhizomes should be intact, reaching about seven to ten centimeters in length.
First you need to prepare the holes for your plantings. An interval of at least fifty centimeters must be observed between plants. Space is usually left between the rows for normal strawberry care.
Be sure to spill your holes well with water. One bucket is usually enough for twenty holes. After these procedures, you can start planting. When the King's Crown strawberry is planted, water it again and then lay a layer of peat or humus as mulch.
Such a measure will help avoid weeds, and will also allow moisture to stay in the soil longer. Many experienced gardeners use a dark opaque film as mulch. Through it, no weeds are able to germinate, and moisture will stay in the soil for a long time.
Strawberry Crown: variety care
And at the same time, the garden strawberry Crown is not so often exposed to diseases, it survives bad weather well. Let's talk about some points regarding the care of the Korona strawberry variety:
- Fertilization. This is a fairly important point among the rest. Since without proper fertilizing, it is unlikely that it will be possible to get a bountiful high-quality crop. The Korona strawberry variety is good for organic fertilizers. This can be urea, humus, or wood ash.
- Also, for the normal growth and development of plants, minerals are also required. It is periodically necessary to replenish stocks of potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus. During the growing season, top dressing must be applied three times: after the buds have blossomed, before the plants bloom and after the entire crop has been harvested.
- This strawberry variety forms a fairly large number of whiskers. This is not bad in terms of plant propagation. However, excessive thickening of your plantings should not be allowed. This will reduce your yield and the fruit will become smaller. To prevent this from happening, periodically cut your plantings, remove the mustache after the entire crop is harvested. As a rule, this time falls in late autumn.
- If you grow Corona in areas that are too cold for strawberries (central, northern regions), then organize a shelter for your plants for the winter. After you have done the autumn pruning of the tendrils, sprinkle your plants with peat or ash.
- For these purposes, gardeners sometimes use humus, spruce branches or sawdust. If the winters in your area are very cold, then use agrofiber or other non-woven fabric designed for this purpose.
- Do not use materials that can attract rodents or retain moisture. When snow appears, create hills from it on your plantings.
- 4) Periodically, you need to carry out preventive spraying of your strawberry bushes, since this variety of strawberries is often attacked by gray rot and various spots.
- For this, special chemicals are used. If you see that the infection could not be avoided, then do not hesitate to treat the affected plants. Or completely remove them from the garden, as this may damage the entire area with strawberries.
- Be sure to water your plants. Since if there is not enough water, then the quality of the fruit deteriorates markedly. The berries become smaller and uneven. It is best to mount a drip irrigation system for these purposes. When the strawberries are in bloom, you need more watering. About twenty liters of water should go to one square of the area. But in normal times, ten liters per square meter is enough. Make sure that no drops of water fall on foliage and fruits. This can cause the strawberries to become sick with gray mold. The water should not be cold. Optimally +20 degrees.
- There are many ways to propagate the Crown strawberry: with the help of seeds, whiskers, dividing bushes. However, whisker breeding is the most popular. Usually, antennae from two or three year old bushes are taken for these purposes. They usually give the best results.
