The Gigantella strawberry variety can be classified as high, since they can stretch up to 60 centimeters. The leaves are wide and have irregular and zigzag and slightly torn edges, characteristic of most strawberry species. Strawberry Gigantella is a perennial plant and in the first year of fruiting the leaves are colored green, but already in the second season you may notice red blotches on the leaves.
The Gigantella strawberry variety is very fruitful, during the season you can harvest from one bush one and a half kilograms of berries, some gardeners claim that she was able to bring her growing technique to perfection and get even larger numbers. Strawberry Gigantella in the first season gives a good mustache and stepsons on them, which tightly and almost immediately attach their powerful stems to the ground.

The Gigantella strawberry variety gives large berries, the first fruits can reach a weight of one hundred grams, the subsequent harvest will be slightly less weight and reach an average of sixty grams. The fruits have a biconcave oval shape. The surface is rough, has the usual graininess for strawberries. The lower edge of the berry has a ridge, which in case of a lack of light will be immature and differ in color.
Gigantella strawberries are very picky about soil moisture levels, so the frequency of watering should be calculated correctly. In the case of an inappropriate water irrigation schedule, the plant in the berries may be happy with empty space. With proper care, strawberries are quite firm and dense, which is a great advantage for their further transportation.
The color of the fruit is red without overflow.
Berries of the Gigantella strawberry variety are distinguished by the characteristic taste inherent in this particular variety, notes of pineapple and juiciness will make them favorites on your table. An interesting fact is that Gigantella strawberry does not have the usual strawberry aroma, rather it gives off a slightly pineapple smell.

The nature of the Gigantella strawberry variety is not repaired, its fruits ripen among the latter in comparison with ordinary strawberry varieties. Depending on the planting area, the harvest time varies from early to late June. Best of all, the Gigantella strawberry variety feels in the southern regions of our country. Crimea and Krasnodar Territory are ideal for growing. In the northern regions of the country, the Gigantella strawberry takes root with great difficulty, and therefore it is grown in greenhouses. When choosing a soil, it is worth excluding options for clay and stony soil, since in this option your plant will not give a good harvest, the root system will begin to dry out, and the berries will be smaller in comparison with the standard size. Choose sandy landing conditions and you can't go wrong.
Landing in black soil
If your soil is black soil, then add sand and mix before planting on a previously prepared and fertilized area. The weather conditions in central Russia are too changeable for the Gigantella strawberry variety. Colds alternating with warming, plus high humidity lead to rotting of the root system and frostbite of the plant.
The Gigantella strawberry variety develops well and tolerates all diseases only in the year of planting, and you will also get the highest yield in the first year of the growing season.Starting from the second year, the plant will begin a negative reaction to all external stimuli: an attack by pests will lead to their dominance, a change in weather and temperature conditions to a decrease in immunity and disease.
Mulching
You can limit contact of leaves with the ground by mulching the Gigantella strawberry variety. For processing this variety, straw from wheat or rye is best suited. It is worth paying attention to dry fallen coniferous needles and sawdust, they cover the soil. If you are afraid that small pests (beetles, fleas, caterpillars) live in natural material, then before using it, neutralize it with boiling water and spread it out in the sun.
Such preparation is not required for other varieties of strawberries, but the "capricious" Gigantella strawberries require additional attention and care. When growing "for yourself", you can cover the land with agrofibre; on an industrial scale, such a measure is too financially costly.
Strawberry Gigantella: variety care

The Gigantella strawberry variety loves a stable temperature. Swings will lead to a change and disruption in growth, as well as a decrease in the number of crops. High temperature can stop the process and the function of reproduction, since the pollen after overheating is not suitable for fertilization of inflorescences and the fruits, respectively, are not formed.
Watering strawberries of the Gigantella variety is preferable to moderate, and the level of soil moisture, as we wrote above, correspond to the requirements of the variety. In the event of a lack of moisture, the plant will behave like any other during a drought: the root system will dry out, the foliage will wither, the berries will become smaller at first, and if the drought continues, the ovaries will no longer form. On the opposite side, with an excess of water, the root system begins to rot, the fruits are small, wrinkled and unripe. Excess moisture does not affect the taste, but the fruit becomes watery. The most interesting thing is that with all the above disadvantages, the outer side remains tight, due to which the quality of transportation is not lost, which is not always good for business or sale.
Breeding varieties
Reproduction of the Gigantella strawberry variety takes place in two ways: by dividing or seeding. The variety does not give many stepchildren, for this reason, you need to be especially careful about the growth and formation of a mustache; with proper care, you can get up to seven samples from one strawberry bush.
It is best to immediately identify and designate for yourself two or three bushes that will sprout for further breeding. The selected plants will not bear fruit for you, since the rosettes must be removed for good sprout formation. Towards the middle of July, the stepsons remove and transfer to the future the place of permanent landing, sprinkling them with earth. This time of the year was chosen for a reason, the seedlings should gain strength and get used to the weather conditions before the onset of cold weather.
Reproduction by horns is acceptable.
This variety is not propagated by seeds, since with this method the qualities characteristic of the Gigantella strawberry variety are completely lost.
Strawberry Gigantella: threats to plant development
If in the first year the Gigantella strawberry variety is quite resistant to pests and diseases, then from the second season the threats to development increase greatly. Consider them:
- Gray rot (fungus) infects the Gigantella berries and is expressed as a gray bloom that looks like mold, which further leads to rotting of the berries. The bushes must be processed as quickly as possible, since the disease spreads quickly through the wind and through precipitation, with high humidity, the fungus progresses.
- Spotting (fungus) poses a direct threat to yield, visually these are purple spots. The main damage is to the peduncles and stalks. The infection progresses under conditions of high humidity. Able to reduce yields up to sixty percent.
- Nematode a micro parasite (worm) infects the berries. They feed on life sap, then defecate into fruits and the plant as a whole.
- Black rot this is a fungal infection that leads to the death of the roots. Infected bushes can be easily removed from the planting site.
- Root rot begins its defeat from young roots, passes to the stems of seedlings and then to the plant as a whole. As a result, the seedling dies.
- Danger also bears powdery mildew... It begins to spread from small foci on the leaves (dots), in a neglected state it covers the entire plant and the bush dies. This disease is a fungal pathogen, the infection tolerates the cold season under the leaf mat.
- A great threat to young plants is fusarium wilting... Turns the plant into dust, from foliage to roots, as the plant is completely infected. The disease progresses in hot conditions, and weeds are the main carriers of the infection.
Strawberry Gigantella: reviews of gardeners
-
Vera Lvovna, Samara region: “The name of the Gigantella strawberry variety speaks for itself: the fruits are very large. I grow this variety because of its unusual taste, unlike other strawberry varieties. I really like that Gigantella strawberries have a long shelf life and make it possible to enjoy their delicious fresh berries for a long time. "

Svetlana Mikhailovna, Sverdlovsk region: “For me, the Gigantella strawberry is too capricious berry. In caring for it, you need to observe many subtleties, and even then, it is not a fact that you will get a rich harvest. Despite the fact that the Gigantella strawberry variety is very tasty, I prefer to eat it, buying it on the market, rather than growing it from scratch. "
