Clematis: winter-hardy varieties for the Leningrad region
Content:
Clematis or clematis can often be seen on the garden plots of Russians. Of course, most gardeners simply cannot resist these liana-like plants, which have the property of blooming twice profusely and continuously in one season. The color palette of clematis is huge from red-pink to blue-violet tones, leaves and inflorescences are large. In this article, we will look at winter-hardy varieties of clematis
Variety selection
However, the most common reason why Russian gardeners find themselves from clematis is low air temperature in winter and spring, or sudden changes in temperature during the warm summer-autumn period.
Therefore, when selecting a plant variety, first of all, it is necessary to take into account in which climatic zone the clematis will have to grow. It is worth turning the infusion to such indicators of the variety as resistance to low temperatures, the development of immunity, vulnerability to pests and diseases, as well as the preferred type of soil.
But no matter how changeable the climatic conditions of middle Russian latitudes, thanks to the scientific activity of breeders, special varieties were bred. Today we will pay attention to varieties that successfully take root and grow on the territory of the Leningrad Region. Their feature is the earlier flowering of the first wave - from the beginning of May - in comparison with more southern varieties.
Clematis varieties
Variety "Ballerina"
the longest flowering of all clematis varieties, blooms continuously from early May to October. The color of the flowers is white, they are located on the stem one by one, but at a close distance from each other, and grow up to 15 cm in diameter, which look great against the background of rich green leaves. By clinging to a support, the plant can grow up to three meters long.
Variety "Madame de Cult"
is also a representative of a white flower color, or rather snow-white. Liana grows up to 3 meters in length, but has larger flowers, up to two tens of centimeters in diameter, with pointed petals. It begins to bloom on old branches only at the beginning of summer, and on new shoots only from mid-summer. This variety is quite capricious. It does not tolerate pruning, lack of sun or shade, and prefers acidic soil types.
Variety "Nelly Moser"
similar in color to a flowering apple tree. The flowers are large, symmetrical, which unfortunately only bloom for two months, in late spring - early summer. This is due to the fact that flowers grow and bloom only on last year's shoots, which is a feature of this clematis variety. Young shoots in the first year are gaining strength for flowering for the next season. Flowers have a double color, in the middle of each petal is a reddish line, the rest of the petal is pale pink. The flower shape can be classified as star-shaped, opening up to 20 cm in diameter. With constant exposure to direct sunlight, the flowers begin to fade, and in general, this variety does not like heat and prefers partial shade. Possesses high frost resistance and is able to withstand frosts down to -30 ℃.
Variety "Hope"
was obtained by Russian scientists. Flowers of this variety have elongated cupped-shaped petals, pointed at the end, grow up to 15 cm, are arranged one by one, which visually enlarges the flowers. The color of the flowers is rather pale, but in the middle of each petal there are several thin lines several tones darker than the main color. The first wave of flowering occurs in May and ends by early summer, the second wave begins in mid-summer to mid-autumn.For the winter, the plant is freed from support and covered. To do this, in late autumn, always in dry weather, in order to avoid infection with fungal diseases, the shoots are cut off, leaving only 1 or 1.5 meters in length.
Variety "Comtesse de Boucher"
is one of the most old varietiesbred in France. It is famous for its high resistance to various diseases, as well as its ability to endure almost any natural phenomena without consequences - frost, drought, prolonged rains and strong winds. The cupped flowers are presented in a red color range, from pink to purple. The petals are wide with uneven, most often wavy edges, growing up to 15 cm in diameter. The plant blooms late and blooms for a relatively short time for 1.5-2 months in each wave, on old shoots the flowering period is from mid to late summer, followed by a wave of flowering on new branches.
Variety "Nikolay Rubtsov"
as the name implies, it was obtained by Russian breeders. The color of the flowers of this variety of clematis is heterogeneous and contains a complex mixture of primary colors, therefore, inflorescences of all shades of lilac, purple, lilac and red are found in this plant. In addition, the color of each flower is not uniform; the petals have several lines along the edges, which practically repeat the shape of the petal. The variety is large-flowered, the size of the flower can reach 15-17 cm in diameter. The plant grows up to 250 cm and blooms for a rather long time from late spring to mid-autumn. Loves sunlight, does not tolerate wind and drafts, is able to withstand frosts down to -30 ℃.
Ville de Lyon variety
grows up to 300 cm long and blooms, both on old shoots and new ones, from May throughout the summer. The color scheme of colors is rich red, with a variety of tints. The flowers have wide, obovate petals, which in turn are darker at the edges than in the middle of the petal. The stamens are light, immediately attract attention by the fact that they seem to glow, especially in the evening.
Variety "Alexandrite"
early flowering, grows up to 3 meters, flowers on a liana are located singly and grow up to 13-15 cm in diameter. The flowers have a bright and uniform color of red, pink-red or dark red. Flowers on old branches begin to bloom in May, which lasts all summer months, and on new shoots, the flowering period is short, about a month, from August to September.
