Clematis Jacqueman
Content:
Clematis are delightful shrubs that have won the hearts of our flower growers for quite some time. They have excellent decorative characteristics, a fairly long flowering period and can perfectly decorate absolutely any personal plot. It is only overshadowed by the fact that these beautiful plants need time to adapt to the Russian climate, because initially clematis are rather delicate and capricious vines. Although more and more varieties have appeared recently, the most hardy and resistant to our weather conditions, and less demanding in care. A large number of such varieties are representatives of the Zhakman group. We will consider Clematis Zhakmana and its features in this article.
Clematis Zhakmana: variety description and characteristics
Clematis violet Jacqueman: photo of the variety
Clematis of the Jacquemann group are completely different if you look at the photographs, but they have a number of similar characteristics and features, such as:
- The genus of the plant is clematis or clematis.
- The form of the plant is a shrub liana.
- By type, they are considered large-flowered.
- All plants of this group have abundant flowering, curly, rather unpretentious and endowed with large and healthy roots.
- According to their purpose, they are: ground cover decoration and gardening, or vertical.
- All of them are perennials.
- They have several methods of propagation, such as: layering, cuttings, dividing the bush and seeds.
- In low-growing varieties, the length of the stems varies from one to one and a half meters. In tall plants, the length is from three to four meters.
- Flowering occurs on new shoots.
- Depending on the growing area, the flowering period starts in May-June and ends in September.
- Flowers can be 7 to 20 centimeters in diameter.
- Flowers have shades such as violet-blue, purple.
- Clematis Zhakman pruning for the winter requires abundant pruning, Clematis Zhakman has a third pruning group.
- Quite unpretentious to climatic conditions and care. Some varieties have varying degrees of resistance to pests and infections.
In terms of flowering, plants of this group have a number of their own characteristics:
- The buds of these clematis are formed of an elongated conical shape, looking up or to the side.
- Flowers are non-double, simple, open and directed to the side or up. In rare cases, drooping forms can be seen.
- The flowers consist of 4-7 elliptical petals with sharp tips and a velvety or smooth outer surface. They can slightly overlap each other or roll outward.
- They have bright colors. Most often these are dark colors of purple, blue, and also often Jacqueman's clematis - purple. And also the petals can be with two-color or gradient colors. Such flowers look especially excellent and spectacular.
The immunity to diseases and the likelihood of attack by pests of these varieties differ, but what they are similar in is their good unpretentiousness to the climatic conditions of growth and the peculiarities of care.
The origin of clematis Zhakman
The group was endowed with its name thanks to one fairly popular subspecies, which underlies all absolutely bred subspecies of this group. This variety of Jacqueman appeared in England, in 1858, and over the next decades it was actively spread among flower growers in many countries. The variety is characterized as a shrub-type liana, the shoots of which can reach 4 meters in length, as well as having a fairly abundant flowering period, and on new shoots. The flowers are open, can reach a diameter of 15 centimeters and have a purple-dark hue, which has the ability to fade under the sun. Flowers consist of 4-6 petals arranged crosswise. In the center of the flower are anthers of a cream or pale yellow color, with a brown furrow. It is considered a fairly unpretentious variety for growing conditions and care. These distinctive features were the reason for actively using it for breeding.
At this time in our country it is quite difficult, one might even say that it is impossible, to find this variety. Now this name hides seedlings of the most modern plants, with a similar shape and shade. It should be noted right away that the varieties of clematis Barbara Jacqueman (Patens group) and Jacqueman Alba clematis (Florida group) do not belong to this clematis at all, and are not even considered their relatives.
At the moment, there are more than 90 varieties belonging to this group, obtained as a result of crossing clematis of this variety and other varieties of different groups of this plant. And this group includes not only foreign varieties, but also those bred by Russian scientists.

Clematis Zhakmana: care and landing
Clematis Zhakmana begin to be planted in a permanent growing place in the spring and autumn. Depends on the climatic and weather conditions of the region of future growth. So, for example, when growing in the south of our country, the time for planting falls on the month of March, or the last days of September or the first half of October. But in regions with the most severe climate, the best option for landing would be mid-April-first half of May, or the end of August-first half of September.
When planting several bushes at once, you should know that you need to leave a distance of about one and a half meters between them. The roots of this plant do not grow in width, but in depth, but, despite this, a number of flower growers still dig in so-called fences, such as sheets of roofing material, next to the planting holes. This is done so that the shrubs cannot suppress each other's growth. Although these varieties of clematis are distinguished by their unpretentiousness, they still relate well to the introduction of mineral and organic dressings. It is very important that these plants prefer to be grown in soil with a neutral reaction level. If there is acidic soil at the landing site, then it is required to add dolomite flour or ordinary ash to the planting hole, which contribute to alkalization. And when planting in alkaline soil, you need to add acidifying additives, such as needles, or sawdust.
Also, during planting of a seedling, trellises are installed at the same time, along which this shrub vine will climb in the future, since these clematis grow at a fairly rapid pace to a significant height, and a large number of these varieties require supports already in the first year of life.
Before you start planting these plants, you need to choose the right site for growing. To do this, follow some tips:
- These shrubs are contraindicated in the place of growth, where stagnation of fluid near the measles system can occur. Therefore, if there are surface groundwaters on your site, then you should first make small hills for the landing holes, and make special drainage holes near them.
- For good growth and development, clematis of the Zhakman group should be planted in a place where they will receive sunlight from six hours a day. But here you need to take into account the fact that some varieties of this group are capable of fading in the sun. And therefore, a number of experienced florists prefer to plant these plants in a small partial shade so that the decorative qualities of the shrubs are not lost.
- In clematis of the Zhakman group, the root system is located quite close to the surface of the soil, so they tend to overheat the roots, in order to avoid this, the ground above these delicate roots is often mulched. Loose tops or peat are used as mulch. You can also use this method: plant lawn grass or low annuals under these shrubs.
- Choose a draft-free growing area. To do this, you can plant clematis behind trees and other bushes, or near structures that can shelter the plant from strong gusty winds, otherwise the presence of wind can lead to the fact that young shoots will break, and the flowers will also deteriorate quite badly.
- Too close placement of these plants to solid support places can also adversely affect the condition of clematis. After all, it may happen that the liquid flowing down from the roof can accumulate at the roots, or wash them away, as well as the dense green mass of plants will contribute to strong shading of the wall, which, in turn, will cause ideal conditions for the reproduction of various molds, fungi and harmful small insects ...Therefore, it is required to plant these shrubs at a distance of at least half a meter from such solid supports, and also make wire trellises with an inclination from the roof of the structure to the base of the plant. Moreover, such a regularly ventilated gap is formed between the wall and the shrub, which also helps to constantly trim the shoots of Zhakman's clematis.
Caring for Zhakman's clematis does not require much effort and investment. Everything is pretty standard: in the spring, carry out a sanitary procedure for pruning Zhakman's clematis, apply top dressing in a timely manner, do watering procedures, loosen the ground under the bush (but very carefully so as not to accidentally damage the roots of the plant), and also carry out processing with special means that can protect clematis from various diseases and harmful insects. Clematis Zhakmana give color on new shoots, as well as clematis Zhakmana - the third group of pruning in the autumn, that is, during the preparation of the plant for the winter season, absolutely all shoots are pruned quite strongly, to the second or third bud from ground level. In the south of our country, these plants can perfectly endure the winter period under a layer of made mulch. In regions with a harsher and more difficult climate, the shrub is required in additional shelter, for example, non-woven material, roofing felt, which are then sprinkled with sawdust, peat or humus. Shrubs belonging to this group are characterized by sufficient frost tolerance, even for successful cultivation in the Russian climate.
Clematis Zhakmana in landscape design
Clematis Zhakmana: photo of the variety
The varieties of clematis of the Zhakman group are quite actively used due to their decorative characteristics. After all, these shrubs have a fairly long and abundant flowering period, they can be used to build beautiful hedges and walls. Often they are planted next to verandas, gazebos, porches, dilapidated fences. And also, thanks to these plants, you can hide the unsightly wall of any structure. Some gardeners for these clematis make special supports, of an unusual shape, complex design, or they plant several varieties at once along the same length and a large trellis. The stems of these plants can not only grow upward along their supports, but also be in a horizontal or inclined position. Due to this, they are also used as ground cover plants, which can be used to decorate alpine hills, low fences. Some growers often make excellent compositions by planting varieties of various colors near these clematis. In this case, the probability of color change both horizontally and vertically is taken into account in advance. The situation is that different subspecies of these shrubs may differ not only in their shape and shade, but also in the arrangement of flowers on the shoots. In order to get a stunning and spectacular appearance, you can plant low-growing subspecies next to clematis varieties, in which the color is formed on the upper half of the stems. It is also worth noting that these shrub vines are excellently combined with bushes of park and climbing roses. In addition, both of these plants are similar in their maintenance and pruning requirements, making them much easier to grow together. It is also not uncommon when these clematis are used in decorating loggias and balconies. And here both low-growing varieties and tall subspecies are suitable, but the best option would be varieties with not very powerful and large roots that will not freeze in extreme cold and will not dry out on hot days, being grown in separate containers. Nowadays, these shrubs are gaining great popularity in the application of decorating interior interiors, office and residential premises.
I widely use flowers of these subspecies in cutting. They make up beautiful bouquets, and I also decorate the room in this way: large flowers are separated from the stems and immersed in flat containers with liquid, which in turn looks quite unusual in the cold season. For this method of decoration, gardeners receive material through forcing low-growing varieties of these shrubs in closed ground in winter.
Clematis Zhakmana: reviews of gardeners

It is not for nothing that the clematis of the Zhakman group occupy a leading place among decorative vines. They are able to transform absolutely any personal plot, hide unsightly or defective walls and various buildings, decorate your home and office. The varieties of this group are quite unpretentious to planting and care, which cannot but rejoice, and are also quite hardy and diverse. And these facts undoubtedly cause special popularity and love among flower growers.
There are now a lot of reviews on the Internet about the clematis of the Zhakman group, here are some of them:
- For a very long time I was going to start growing these shrubs, but I was worried that I would not be able to properly care for them. Until a variety from this group was recommended to me, they said that they were quite resistant and not capricious varieties. As a result, after the first planting of the Nezhdanny variety of shrubs, one year later she also planted Comtesse de Boucher, both of which are near the house, and the pillars at the veranda serve as a support. I am very satisfied, they have taken root remarkably and quickly, and leaving does not cause any difficulties. So I think that I need to buy a couple more bushes, because there should be a lot of such beauty during the flowering period!
Elena, 57 years old.
- I have been growing shrubs from this group for about 10 years. Two tall bushes of the Ernest Markham variety grow near the solid wall of the house, and the low Teksa and Stasik are located in the garden, near separate supports. I have never experienced any problems with these plants. For the winter period, I mulch with peat and cut off all the shoots. With the arrival of spring, the shrubs grow back at a fairly fast pace and the underground buds have never frozen out. The flowering of the bushes is very beautiful and long-lasting, almost until the very cold weather. And also a big plus for them that they are not demanding for special care.
Evgeniy, 45 years old
- I don’t remember exactly how long, but for a long time we have been growing varieties Lunny Svet and Polska Varshavianka. I only know what my grandmother used to plant. And last year I decided to plant Ruytel and Tex in order to decorate and separate the recreation area from the vegetable garden area. To do this, on the low stone walls, I installed a metal mesh, along which I directed the stems of clematis in a horizontal position. The result exceeded expectations! Plus, the shrubs are unpretentious and hardy, which, of course, is very pleasing. Next year, I will probably decorate the garden with other varieties of clematis of the Zhakman group.
Olga, 37 years old
- I am engaged in the cultivation of such varieties of clematis as Rouge Cardinal and Luther Burbank. I like the fact that they do not require special care and have a stunning appearance. When doing heavy pruning, they survive the winter period quite well. But before planting, however, it was necessary to alkalize the soil with dolomite flour, but in general there are no problems with the clematis of the Zhakman group.
Svetlana, 49 years old
- Jacqueman's Clematis are considered the most beautiful and beloved for me. I have them growing in a wide variety, including varieties of this group. About three years ago, I hardly found the sort of Silver Stream that I wanted, and planted it in the neighborhood with a climbing rose of a bright scarlet hue. What has turned out delights everyone around, extraordinary beauty.
Tatiana, 60 years old
- For a long time I doubted buying Zhakman's clematis, but then I tried to plant the Negritanka variety, after which I acquired Moonlight. As it turned out, I was in vain for so long doubting, because I do not observe any difficulties with cultivation and care. They do not get sick, the flowering is beautiful, and they grow remarkably. For the winter period, however, I cover it with covering material, and sprinkle it with foliage on top, just in case. Probably Zhakman's clematis are the best decorations for the site, I'm happy!
