Clematis Omoshiro
Content:
Clematis are plants that are especially loved by all gardeners in Russia. They have earned this reputation due to their ability to adapt to almost any conditions, and also, of course, due to their incredible beauty. Clematis is a vine, and therefore it is ideal for vertical gardening of the garden, and when choosing the best variety for growing on their site, gardeners rely on precisely these qualities: the length of the vine and the external qualities of flowers. We worked for you and chose a variety that combines both of these qualities, and which, in our opinion, is one of the most versatile varieties. Rest assured that whatever your needs, it will work for you. In this article, we will dwell on one of the varieties in more detail, namely, the Omoshiro clematis variety.

Clematis Omoshiro: variety description
Clematis Omoshiro is considered so good and suitable for any garden due to the fact that those qualities for which clematis are especially valued are most developed in it. First of all, clematis, of course, are loved for their ability to grow on almost any surface. Thanks to their petioles, they can even cling to a vertical vertical wall. Clematis cultivar Omoshiro perfects this clematis ability thanks to its strong and persistent shoots, each of which reaches a length of at least 2.5 meters. However, of course, not for the length of the shoots, certain varieties of clematis are classified as the best or the worst. Their initial goal is to decorate the garden, and therefore it is the flowers of the variety that are looked at first of all. And, believe me, the Omoshiro variety has a lot to see.
Clematis Omoshiro was bred in Japan, which is famous for its cherry blossoms. And it is the color of this national Japanese plant that has been immortalized in the flowers of Clematis Omoshiro. They have an incredibly delicate shade of pink, which smoothly turns into purple closer to the tips of the petals. This gives the flowers of the Omoshiro variety a special sophistication. On the subject, this variety belongs to the large-flowered species of clematis, which means that each of its flowers is at least 14-15 centimeters in diameter.
It is also important how long clematis blooms. After all, I would not want him to please you with his beauty for just a couple of weeks. However, the Omoshiro variety does not have such problems. It belongs to the clematis of the third pruning group, which means that it blooms twice a year: the first time on old shoots, and the second time on young ones. Unfortunately, the second bloom will be slightly less colorful.
It is not hard to guess that, like a climbing plant, clematis has tremendous decorative potential. Over the many decades that Clematis Omoshiro was in operation, countless applications were invented for him, but the most popular are:
- Creation of hedges (for this you will need to place special supports before planting seedlings)
- Decoration of buildings. This is especially useful if you need to decorate a bare wall.
- Using clematis Omoshiro as shading for gazebos or garden beds.
If you properly and carefully look after clematis Omoshiro, you can achieve truly amazing results: anyone who visits your garden will envy such incredible beauty.
Clematis Omoshiro: cultivar pruning group
As already mentioned, this variety belongs to the third pruning group. However, what does this really mean? A distinctive feature of the varieties belonging to this pruning group is that they form flowers even on the shoots of this year. Moreover, their quality practically does not differ from the flowers that appeared on the shoots of the previous year. This means that if you live in a frosty region, for the winter all shoots can be almost completely cut off. This will greatly simplify the construction of the cold protection. However, this is not the only way to cut off varieties of the third group. The rest are listed below:
- Pruning to the first true sheet.
- Pruning to the most developed bud. Please note that together with it, you need to leave at least 2-3 more.
- Plain pruning 20-30 centimeters above the soil.
Many people believe that it is the varieties belonging to the third pruning group that are the best choice when buying clematis, because they have undeniable advantages:
- Speed and ease of use. In fact, many budding gardeners have fatal difficulties with pruning certain plants. Believe me, they will definitely not be with Omoshiro clematis, because pruning is so fast, simple and intuitive that you won't even blink when everything will be ready.
- The second major plus is the already mentioned simplified protection of the third group of clematis from winter cold.
- You also do not need to worry about keeping the clematis branches in top condition at all times: they will be cut by the end of the season anyway.
Clematis Omoshiro: outdoor cultivation
Like all other types of clematis, the Omoshiro variety is incredibly easy to shelter in your garden. These plants, in principle, are not very demanding, and there is only one and only rule that in no case should be violated when working with them - never allow waterlogging.
For planting, spring or autumn are best suited. In fact, spring is much more preferable, because it is at this time that it is much easier to guess the period of time when the weather will be the most stable and will not provide surprises. However, the final word on when to plant clematis in your garden will have its location. For example, if you live in the south or even in the central regions, then the very beginning of spring will be the best time for you to plant. Winter ends early and the cold recedes quickly. And these are the ideal conditions for planting the Omoshiro variety. On the other hand, if you live in the north, it is better to wait until the end of April or even May. In addition, in the north, autumn planting is completely contraindicated, because the root system simply will not have time to prepare for cold and snowstorms and, most likely, will die.

There are several other nuances that you definitely need to know if you are going to grow the Omoshiro clematis variety:
- You should also not tighten with the landing. The deadline is the end of May. If you plant the shrub later, it simply will not have time to adapt to the soil in which it was planted, and this is fraught with the fact that it will meet the winter completely unprotected.
- Planting in summer also does not bode well, however, theoretically, the seedlings can still survive. However, it's best not to risk it.
- The critical period for autumn planting is a month and a half to a month before the onset of the first cold weather. It is this time that is enough so that the seedling does not die at the first gust of cold wind.
Once you have chosen your pick-up time, you need to choose a pick-up location. It is important to understand that clematis to him (not only the Omoshiro variety) are very demanding, and do not like to be in the shade or under strong gusts of wind. Therefore, the place must be chosen as illuminated and calm as possible. In extreme cases, you can build a protective structure specially for the seedling, which will protect it from strong gusts. In addition, the Omoshiro variety belongs to the climbing vines, which, in simple terms, means that its shoots are incredibly long, and they need a solid support, which should be taken care of even before planting.
The best soil for clematis is neutral. Of course, if it is slightly acidic and alkaline, the shrub will not die, but the most important thing is its fertility. So this is the first factor to look for when choosing a soil.
Step-by-step instructions for planting the Omoshiro clematis variety:
- First of all, you obviously need a planting pit, in which you will place the future decoration of your garden. Such a pit should have dimensions of 60 by 60 by 60 centimeters. However, these rates can vary depending on the type of soil. The optimal distance between the bushes is one and a half meters. Making it smaller is highly discouraged.
- When the pit is ready, it will be possible to pour drainage into the bottom in the form of fine gravel or broken brick. The latter will work much worse, because after a while it will be significantly damaged by water. The approximate layer thickness is 15 centimeters.
- A little fertile soil, prepared in advance, is poured onto the drainage, so that a mound is formed on which we plant the roots of the plant for its stability.
- The neck of the root of the planted clematis should be parallel to the ground, however, a slight deepening is still allowed.
- Now that clematis is planted, you can cover it with soil and tamp it well.
- Congratulations, your clematis has been successfully planted and is expected to be watered abundantly. Remember that the first watering is the most important thing in the life of almost any plant.
However, this does not mean that you need to overdo it. The fact is that clematis is a plant that is very sensitive to moisture and should not be watered too abundantly. Therefore, you will have to constantly monitor so that the moisture in the soil does not stagnate for a long time and all the time to clarify the required amount of water.
Important!
Do not water Omoshiro Clematis during heavy rains, as this can result in too much moisture that will kill the plant root.
After planting, it is very important to closely monitor and care for clematis. Especially for such a delicate and sensitive variety like Omoshiro. Therefore, you must follow these simple rules:
- The most important rule for watering Omoshiro clematis, which we have not yet talked about, is regularity. It is better to water it less abundantly, but much more often. So you are more likely to prevent not only waterlogging, which, as we found out, does not bring anything good with it, but also drying out of the soil, which you need to watch out for (especially in the early stages of clematis growth).
- Feeding clematis is no less important. For its full and constant growth and development, the Omoshiro variety needs a large amount of nutrients, which it can obtain from fertilizers. It is simply necessary to feed young clematis at least three times per season. However, depending on the wishes of the gardener, this figure can be raised to four. The most important rule of feeding is that it is carried out exclusively after watering. Also, summer processing of shoots with potassium permanganate will not be superfluous.
- The gardener's worst enemies, as we all know, are weeds. And from weeds, dissolving their roots around your clematis, you need to get rid of as often as possible. They are dangerous in that they eat food and drink water intended for your plant, and do not allow it to fully grow and develop.
- Pruning is no less important, and perhaps the most important procedure for caring for clematis. We talked a lot about her, but did not elaborate on the details. So, for the first time, pruning according to the rules is carried out when Clematis Omoshiro turns 3 years old. Until this time, it is quite possible to carry out a procedure that is the same for all pruning groups. This procedure is extremely simple, and it will be quite difficult to spoil something. It consists in the fact that absolutely all shoots of the plant are cut off until there is only one bud left on them. This will be enough for further development.Important! This variety of clematis has very strong stems, which makes pruning a little more difficult. Therefore, your tools should be as sharpened as possible.
- In June, Omoshiro clematis seedlings are pinched. In total, this procedure has to be cranked three times: for the first time - when the shoots of the plant reach a length of 10-15 centimeters. The second pinching is carried out at 20-30 centimeters, and the third at 40-50 centimeters.
- The last procedure you will have to face when growing the Omoshiro variety is transplanting. The fact is that this variety reaches its maximum beauty at the age of 3-7 years. After that, its roots expand and intertwine, which leads to their greater need for water. Therefore, about once every seven years, clematis Omoshiro must be rejuvenated by transplantation.
How to prepare clematis for winter?
The only serious drawback of Omoshiro clematis is that they do not tolerate cold very well. Their limit is 23 degrees Celsius below zero, and therefore shelter is vital. The most important thing to protect is the roots. If left uncovered, your clematis will most likely be dead by next season. In order to provide the roots and shoots with the best insulation, you can use, for example, compost or humus. They will give off enough warmth to keep your lovely flowers safe and sound.
Reproduction of clematis Omoshiro
The main methods of propagation of this variety are not strikingly different from the methods of propagation of all other varieties of clematis. How the most effective can be distinguished:
- Propagation by cuttings. This method is widely practiced and is perhaps the most effective. In order to carry out this method of reproduction, you will need to prepare cuttings and grow them for some time in separate containers. After that, when the cuttings are ready for rooting, they can be planted. The best cuttings for this type of propagation are the greenest and youngest ones.
- Reproduction by layering. This method was thought to be especially for beginners. To complete it, it is necessary to bury the clematis shoot in the ground (leaving the tip with foliage on the surface), and after a while dig it out and cut it off. As a result, you will get a full-fledged seedling, which, in addition, will retain absolutely all the varietal characteristics of the mother plant.
- Reproduction by division. This procedure works best in September-October, just before the frost. In fact, it is quite difficult and risky, and therefore it is not advisable for beginners to carry out it.Important!Varietal clematis cannot be propagated by cuttings. They will not die from this, but they will not inherit any varietal traits.
Diseases and pests of Omoshiro clematis
The most common problem found in almost all clematis varieties, not just Omoshiro, is fungal infections. In fact, they are the bane of almost all horticultural crops. The fact is that fungi do not tolerate high temperatures, and therefore in our body, chaos is wrought for the most part by bacteria and viruses, and not by them. But plants are not able to heat their body, and fungi take advantage of this with pleasure. The best method of protection against them is fungicidal drugs such as Fundazol.
All other diseases of the Omoshiro variety are very similar, and almost all of them (with very rare exceptions) are treated with ordinary copper sulfate, which any self-respecting gardener will definitely find.
The worst pests that every year try to feast on Omoshiro's clematis are slugs, snails, nematodes, spider bugs, moths, bears and, of course, aphids. In order to effectively defend against them, you will have to resort to environmentally harmful insecticides. However, ordinary mulching can be used to prevent many of these parasites.

Now Omoshiro is my favorite variety of clematis. Some time ago I experimented with different varieties, tried short and tall. I bought clematis of different colors, but honestly, when I found the Omoshiro variety, I fell in love. It still takes pride of place in my garden. Recently, I even decided to leave him for the winter right on the support. I know it’s risky, but the winter was warm and the vine was not harmed. Of course, what I like most about this variety is its flowering. The peak of beauty comes around the third year. But flowers appear even before that. The only difference is that there are fewer of them. Anyway, I am very glad that I came across this strain. I have no idea what I would have done if I had not found him.

Clematis Omoshiro is one of my favorite varieties. In fact, I'm kind of a fan of these adorable plants. But soil moisture must be monitored constantly, and this is very important. Once I left Omoshiro to grow against the wall and soon regretted it very much. During the rains, water flowing from the roof soaked clematis very much. As a result, I had to get rid of half of the shoots and replant the bush. But he soon recovered and bloomed brighter than before. I recommend this wonderful flower to everyone!
Conclusion
If you still cannot decide which variety clematis you choose, we advise you to draw your attention to Omoshiro. It is not only incredibly delicate and elegant, but also very easy to care for. If you buy it, you will definitely not have any problems with it, and in a few years it will delight you with velvet soft pink flowers throughout the summer.
