Clematis Barbara
Content:
Clematis Barbara is considered a fairly new subspecies of this plant. It was bred in 1993, thanks to the works of the Polish scientist-breeder Sh. Marchiński. And in 2000, the variety was registered and put on sale. In this article, we will take a closer look at this variety of clematis and all the features associated with it.
Clematis Barbara: variety description and characteristics
Clematis Barbara: photo of the variety
As already mentioned, clematis of the Barbara variety appeared not so long ago, but has already won love and respect among gardeners. This plant has a sufficiently large size of flowers, the diameter of which can reach 15 centimeters, as well as an intense pink color (main), but depending on the composition of the soil, and other external factors, this honeycomb can change its color and give out flowers during the flowering period a different shade. By their structure, the flowers are simple, consist of 6 sepals. Immediately after blooming, the flowers of clematis of the Barbara variety are endowed with a pink tint, but after a certain period of time the petals begin to fade along the edge, and a strip of the darkest color forms in the middle of the sepal.
Clematis Barbara is characterized as an early flowering subspecies. The first time the flowering period for this plant begins in the last days of May and lasts until mid-July. And the second time the plant gives color at the end of July and lasts until September.
Hybrid clematis of the Barbara variety is considered the owner of a fairly high level of frost resistance, it can safely endure cold temperatures down to -35 degrees, but the truth is not long. In places of growth, where there is a more severe and severe climate, for the winter period the near-trunk circle of plants is mulched, and in a thick layer.
This variety is endowed with a second pruning level, which means that the flowering period of this plant occurs both on new shoots and on last year's ones. But, growing in a region with a more difficult climate, for the winter season, clematis needs to be cut quite strongly, leaving only up to 20 centimeters from the surface of the earth. In general, this plant can reach a length of up to three meters on average.
It is worth noting the fact that the hybrid clematis Barbara in 2002 won a gold medal from the Dutch exhibition of the international "Plantarium". One of the ancestors of this variety is such a subspecies as Hegley Hybrid. This subspecies of clematis is distributed under the international PBR patent license, that is, it is prohibited to reproduce it without a license. So, even if, purchasing it in the store, they tell you that this plant was grown in the conditions of this area, this means that the cuttings of this clematis were obtained by the store from the official point of sale, and in this region the variety was only grown, adapting it to local weather.
You should be aware that not all varieties with this name are considered relatives of this subspecies. A large number of them were obtained in England:
- Clematis Barbara Jackman. The variety was bred quite a long time ago, back in 1947, by a British breeder, R. Zhakman, and got its name in honor of the scientist's wife. This subspecies has a second pruning group and has a fairly high level of frost resistance. The flowering period of clematis Barbara Jackman occurs twice in one season. The first time the plant blooms in June, and the second time it blooms in early September. The variety is endowed with a fairly large size of flowers, reaching 18 centimeters in diameter.

- Clematis Barbara Dibley. This variety was bred two years later, and it was bred by the same scientist as the previous variety. Clematis Barbara Dibley got its name in honor of the breeder himself. This clematis has a second pruning group and has a fairly good level of frost tolerance.
- Clematis Barbara Harrington. Britain is considered the homeland of this variety. And this subspecies appeared in 2003. The flowers are intense pink in color, composed of round sepals and the middle of a bright yellow shade. The diameter of this flower can be up to 12 centimeters. Clematis Barbara Harrington is considered to be the owner of the third pruning group. Another difference between Clematis Barbara Harrington is considered to be its high level of cold tolerance and the flowering period is quite long, throughout the summer season.

It is worth noting this fact: Although all these listed subspecies are of English origin, in our country they are sold by the production of Holland.
Clematis Barbara: landing
Nowadays, purchasing this type of clematis will not bring difficulties. It is implemented by numerous garden centers. The plant of this variety grows well in the middle zone of our country and in the south.
- Drop off time. Often, the best option for planting is the spring period, at the moment when this plant has the beginning of the growing season. In the southern regions, it is possible to plant this variety in the autumn period, in the month of September, and clematis best of all takes root and adapts to a new place precisely during autumn planting.
- Choosing a place of growth... Compared to other varieties of this plant, this subspecies is not considered demanding on its growing area. It is planted even on the north side of the yard. But even on the lighted side, this plant will feel great.
- The soil. This subspecies is quite unpretentious to the composition of the land for growing, but the best option, nevertheless, will be slightly acidic or neutral soil. That's what this plant doesn't like, it's lowlands and too waterlogged soil. But this does not mean at all that, for example, this clematis will not grow near a well.
- Disembarkation. The hole for this seedling must be prepared in advance. To do this, they dig it out in size from 50 centimeters, at least in width, at least in depth. It is worth planting a seedling in such a way that the root collar of the plant deepens by 12 centimeters, approximately. This will help the plant to form not one or two shoots, but immediately form in the form of a bush. But remember that only the lignified part of the clematis trunk should go deeper.
Clematis Barbara: care and cultivation
Watering
For hybrid clematis Barbara, the watering and fertilizing procedures do not differ at all from the same actions for other varieties. During the watering procedure, each plant of this variety takes about 10 to 20 liters of liquid, it all depends on the age of the clematis. The soil should be moistened fairly deeply, down to the very last root. At a normal, moderate temperature in summer, the plant is watered once every 7 days, while in a dry and hot period, the frequency of watering is increased to three times every 7 days. To retain the necessary moisture in the soil, the near-stem circle of the plant is mulched immediately after watering. As mulch, you can use bark or other similar material, and always the thickness of the mulch throughout the summer season.
Top dressing
It is necessary to make fertilizing for clematis hybrid Barbara up to 4 times per season. Organic fertilizers, for example, a solution of humus or rotted manure, and special mineral mixtures purchased in specialized stores can be suitable as top dressings. It is worth noting that if you add superphosphate to the plant in the spring, when Clematis Barbara begins to wake up, then from the end of spring to summer the plant should be fed with mineral fertilizers based on phosphorus and potassium.
The main features of top dressing:
- Before feeding clematis of the Barbara variety, the ground near its trunk circle should be well moistened.
- The best way to apply dressings will be in conjunction with watering, in the form of liquid solutions.
- During the flowering period, it is impossible to make top dressing for this plant. The first dressing is applied at the very beginning of this season, the second time is applied just before the beginning of the flowering period, the third dressing is done after the end of the flowering period. Another top dressing can be made in the month of July, during the break between the flowering periods of this clematis.
To achieve abundant and lush flowering of Barbara clematis, you can prepare an herbal composition based on wormwood.
Pruning
In the spring, Clematis Barbara can be trimmed in any way. But it is worth knowing that the pruning procedure has an effect on the next flowering of this variety. If you carry out a weak pruning of this plant, then the color will appear already in the last days of May, and with a strong pruning, flowering will begin no earlier than mid-June.
In the autumn, in colder regions, a third pruning group should be applied to this variety. This means that the pruning must be done hard enough. Only about 20 centimeters of the plant's trunk remains above the soil surface, this is 2-3 nodes.
Preparing for the winter period
For the winter, this plant needs to make a thick layer of mulch. Fallen foliage, humus can act as mulch, and the further north the growing regions are, the denser the layer of mulch should be. In the suburbs, for example, a film is pulled over the clematis bushes in addition, and with the arrival of spring this shelter is immediately removed to avoid overheating of the roots. The mulch should be removed gradually. Fully mulch is removed only at that moment in time when frost is no longer expected.
Many gardeners are wondering: is it possible to grow this variety with clematis of other levels of frost tolerance and a pruning group? We answer - of course you can. In the summer, during flowering, you may not even notice the difference between the varieties, only in color they will differ. But during the procedure for pruning and preparing for the winter period, the characteristics of each variety should be taken into account separately. Let's give an example: together with this variety it looks great and grows Clematis varieties Ashva, which has the following characteristic features:
- It has a third pruning group, this is when in the autumn period all shoots are cut almost to the very root, leaving only 2-3 nodes, since this plant will give color on shoots grown in spring.
- It has a fairly high level of frost tolerance, it can withstand a temperature indicator of -30 degrees, but, however, this temperature should not be kept for a long amount of time, and in regions with a more severe climate, the plant needs a thick layer of root circle mulch with peat or humus.
- It has a fairly compact size, reaching a length of two meters.
- The flowers are small, about 8 centimeters in diameter.
This composition has an excellent appearance, due to the fact that: when the Barbara variety blooms from the end of May to mid-July, as well as the second time in September, the subspecies Ashva gives color from the last days of June to September, which means that the flowering period is practically passes without interruption.
Conclusion
Clematis Barbara: photo of the variety
Let's summarize all of the above:
- Hybrid Clematis Barbara has Polish roots, which they could try in our country in 2000.
- Clematis of the Barbara variety is considered to have an early flowering period, and its beautiful flowers can reach a diameter of up to 15 centimeters. This plant requires pruning in a mild form (the second pruning group). A fairly hardy variety for cold weather.
- The main thing is not to confuse this Polish variety with varieties of the same name, but English selection. After all, these are completely different varieties that have nothing in common.
If you decide to grow clematis Barbara, then prepare in advance a support for its stems, it can be a garden mesh that is perfect for this vine, and it takes up a rather small amount of space and does not externally make your site heavier, but it will not be able to protect it from the wind your clematis Barbara.
