Canna description
Canna is a plant that belongs to the canna family of the same name. The plant needs special attention in care, and it is best to cover it for the winter so that the plant does not freeze and die. As for lighting, the plant needs a fairly illuminated place, in height it can reach from 90 centimeters to one and a half meters, in diameter - from 38 to 45 centimeters, which suggests that the plant is quite extensive. The form is a curtain, the canna blooms throughout the summer, and it is best to purchase it in specialized stores and nurseries, so as not to stumble upon a fake or non-viable materials.
Cannu is also called a fluffy lily - an Indian arrow, in other words, and in group plantings this plant looks incredibly attractive and decorative. Canna forms curtains, which consist of wide lance-shaped leaves, painted in a light green shade, on which you can also see a crimson blush. The flowers are in the form of tubules, painted in a bright yellow tint, or in red. Also, they are located in several inflorescences on a very high erect stem. It blooms throughout the summer months and therefore looks very attractive and interesting. In addition, cannes, during flowering, give an incredible splash of flowers on the site, they look incredibly modern in the courtyard, in the small garden, and in the vast personal plots. The most popular variety of cannes is Indian canna, and there are also hybrids that are combined into a general group - the Cat Dor variety is the most popular and widespread among them. You can also highlight a variety called President, since it has very long stems, and the flowers on them are very bright, scarlet, look incredibly impressive.
Canna care
It is best to plant or transplant canna either in March, or in the very first days of April, since at this time there is no need to fear due to recurrent frosts. Canna is planted one seedling at a time in pots or containers, the diameter of which is at least twenty centimeters. You can also plant three seedlings, but in this case, the pots should be at least forty centimeters in diameter. It is also incredibly important to pay attention directly to the composition of the soil - cannes are precisely those crops that most of all need a drained soil rich in trace elements and minerals. In order to enjoy only strong and very healthy and, moreover, ornamental plants, on which bright colorful inflorescences will be located in large numbers, throughout the summer period, it is worth mixing loamy soil and fibrous peat with each other in equal parts. You can also add fine leaf humus there, manure and sand should be well rotted in order to give more organic matter so necessary for cannes. The rhizomes should be buried about fifteen centimeters, and the container with the planting should be placed in the most sunny area, it should also be quite warm there for the bulb and rhizome to take root normally in such conditions.
The planting should be watered very abundantly so that the compost around the tuber slightly settles, but at the same time, the tuber should not be allowed to become bare after this, otherwise there is a great risk that the plant will start to wither and get sick, without even having time to build up its immunity. After that, it is worth slightly reducing the amount of watering, the compost may be slightly moistened, just before new sprouts appear. With their appearance, watering should again be abundant so that the plant has enough strength not only to grow shoots, but also to support the green mass. During the period when the plant is actively growing in size, and also begins to bloom, it should again be watered abundantly enough, using melt or rain water, boiled or filtered water at room temperature for this. Also, in general, you can use settled water, it is perfect for this. When new sprouts appear, you can begin to water with the nutrient fluid. This should be done with a frequency of once or twice a week, not more often. Top dressing should be continued exactly until growth gradually slows down - this usually happens at the end of September. Flowers are cut as they bloom, since dry flowers can not only spoil the appearance of a plant, but can also, in principle, take away strength and energy from it for further development.
When the leaves gradually begin to fade, then watering should be done a little more economically, less. Then watering stops altogether. Just before winter comes. In areas where the climate is moderate, plants can be left outside the house and not protected in any way, while you can cover the cannes with spruce, straw, so that the plant does not freeze at all. But if the gardener lives in an area where there is a high risk of too strong and prolonged frosts, then it is in this case that the tubers are best dug out for the winter in order to protect them from negative effects. When the tubers are dug up, they are dried for two to three days, and then the dead leaves are removed. The same is done with the root system - it is best to remove dead areas. The tubers are covered with moist, but not too wet peat, they are stored in a place where there is no risk of freezing.
Canna breeding
Let's talk a little about cannes breeding. The easiest way to reproduce is to divide the rhizome, which is usually done immediately after the plant has begun to grow, that is, from March to April. In the event that the plant overwintered not in the open field, but in a container, then you should not engage in transplanting until new shoots appear. After that, the soil should be very carefully removed in order to reveal the root system of the cannes. The rosettes of the leaves are disconnected along with a part of the rhizome; for manipulations, it is worth using a well-sharpened instrument that has been previously disinfected. Delenki are planted in pots with a diameter of about twenty centimeters, in which the most ordinary compost is laid. The pots are installed in warm places, the room should be closed, the temperature in them should not be lower than 16 degrees. This process continues exactly until the cut root cuttings enter the stage of very active development. Further, this plant will be positioned as an adult, and it should be treated accordingly. If the rhizome was dug out for the winter, then it can be dug further into the peat, so that the buds just move into a state of more active and abundant growth. It is also worth making sure that the peat is slightly moistened, but not wet, and the temperature should be kept at 16 degrees. When the very first shoots appear, the rhizome should be divided into several parts and planted in separate pots or containers, which the gardener chose on his own in accordance with his wishes.
Cannes can be grown quite easily thanks to seed materials. The seeds are located in a rather large pod, so before planting, it is worth sending the pods to soak in warm water a day before planting. Then they are slightly incised to speed up the germination of seeds. Seeds are planted to a depth of no more than one and a half centimeters; for planting, a pre-prepared pallet is used, which is filled with compost.Further, the seeds are germinated at a temperature of twenty to twenty-four degrees, it is preferable to germinate them in greenhouse conditions, since thanks to them this process will accelerate. It is also worth making sure that the compost is constantly moist and that the pallet is in the shade. At the same time, experienced gardeners say that when growing cannes from seeds, one should be patient, since this process can take a sufficient amount of time, and not everyone can survive it. The seeds have the peculiarity of germinating - they do it completely randomly, and usually it can take from five weeks to four months. As soon as the seedlings take shape a little, and two leaves are formed on it, then it can be redistributed into separate pots. The diameter of the pots is about eight centimeters, and they are filled with the most common compost.
Varieties and varieties
Of course, it's worth talking a little about the types of cannes, since this plant, depending on the species and variety, can differ noticeably, and the more species we consider. The more obvious it will be for the gardener which species are more suited to his needs and expectations, and which ones are best to refuse to grow, since they do not at all fit into his ideas about ideal species and varieties.
- Let's start with a description of the main species - these are Indian cannes. They come from, as the name suggests, from India. The plant is capable of forming a curtain, which is very densely covered with leaves, the stems are very thick and straight, single, in length can reach ninety centimeters. The leaves are glossy, very bright, as they are painted in a bright green hue, sometimes they can also give off a purple color, which is also a feature of this type of cannes. Leaves in the form of copies, oval, their length is almost half a meter, but on average there are leaves reaching 45 centimeters in length. The flowers are tubular, can be painted in red or pink shades, their diameter is about eight centimeters. One of the most striking varieties is Lucifer, as it has crimson, shiny flowers that attract the attention of many gardeners and florists.
- Cannes edible is also a species of cannes native to India. This plant is one of the brightest and highest, its flowers are painted in a very deep red hue. Also, there are also some varieties that have a red-yellow color, but a lot depends, again, on the varietal affiliation. Flowering begins in June and lasts until about September. As we can understand from the name, the plant is edible, in India it is used as a root vegetable from which you can prepare some dishes.
- Garden canna is a species that includes a very wide number of cannes hybrids in its family. The most valuable cannes are Cat Dor, their flowers are painted in dark golden or yellow shades, while decorative brownish-red spots are located on them, which look like freckles and very decorate the plant. The Queen Charlotte variety has yellow or scarlet flowers that also look very decorative and attractive. Striatus is a variety on which dark orange flowers and leaves are formed, which are covered with decorative stripes of dark and light shades. You can also highlight such a variety as Mrs. Wallace - his flowers are bright yellow in color. This diversity attracts gardeners and, moreover, these varieties are distinguished by their relative unpretentiousness, which also plays a very important role in the growth and development of these crops.
Diseases and pests
If the gardener treats the care of plants carelessly and carelessly, if you do not provide the cannes with proper watering and feeding on a regular basis, this will lead to the fact that the leaves will gradually fade, and as a result, they will completely lose their color and their decorative features. It is also important to protect the cannes from the cold, especially in areas where the weather is unstable. If the plant lacks moisture, then this can lead to the fact that the cannes will be affected by pests. First of all, it is a red tick.To successfully get rid of it, you can treat the plant with insecticides, those insecticides that are based on the drug milation will be especially effective. Green aphids are another pest that can be very dangerous to the plant. In order to get rid of it, it is enough to treat the plant with insecticides based on peretrium, since this pest cannot be allowed to attack younger, not yet formed sprouts. To understand that aphids have started on the plant. It should be inspected regularly - unsightly dark spots will begin to appear on the stems, shoots and leaves, which will just become a sign that a pest has wound up on the plant. If you take some preventive measures and periodically inspect the plant, process it, then the risk of developing pests and diseases will noticeably decrease, so you should not lose your vigilance, but you should be very careful and appreciate your plantings.
