How to plant cherries

To keep your garden looking healthy and well-groomed, it needs to be rejuvenated and expanded from time to time. In order to get a new type of variety, to renew an old tree, or for the purpose of a routine experiment, many summer residents begin grafting a young cut on pre-planted seedlings or on prepared branches of an older tree. In order for the grafting of cherries to go right, you need to know the time when it is preferable to do this, choose the right plant material, as well as the peculiarities of the grafting process. How to plant cherries correctly will be discussed below.
How to plant cherries and what time is best for grafting
Grafting cherry cuttings (rootstock), which will have to bring a rich harvest of cherry fruits, on a young base (scion), which is resistant, will allow the summer resident to get a stronger tree. Such a tree will have a high level of fruiting.
Connecting the lower and upper parts of the plant will not be particularly difficult. But the gardener must carry out all actions clearly and quickly, he must have some knowledge. What results you get from this procedure directly depends on when you carry out the vaccination procedure.
Early spring is best. This is the period when the tree begins to come out of the state of hibernation, the movement of sap begins in the tree trunks. If it did not work to graft the plant, or it did not bring the desired results, then you can repeat the procedure in the summer. Mid-July is good.
It is better to choose a dry, windless day so that there are no severe frosts at night. And let it be early morning or evening.
Preparation of the base, cuttings and tools
The graft for grafting must be grown from seeds, seeds or seedlings yourself. Can be purchased from other summer residents or formed from an adult healthy plant. The place where the cuttings and bases are connected is chosen and prepared depending on which method of grafting the summer resident chooses.
Harvesting cuttings is best done:
- In late autumn. Before the first frosts start. Choose a cool and dry place to store them.
- With the onset of spring or summer. Before you start the grafting procedure.
For grafting, you need to choose young shoots that need to be cut at an angle, divide them into blanks, which will have a height of up to 30 cm. Each cutting should have from 3 to 4 buds. If you are going to store cuttings for a long period of time, then they must be wrapped in damp gauze and placed in a cool place,
You can choose storage in the basement, cellar, refrigerator. In order to carry out the grafting procedure, you can use the following tools:
- Garden knife (you can take a pruner to trim cuttings).
- Strapping material (tape or grafting tape).
- Garden varnish or oil paint.
- Plastic bag.
Knives (secateurs, hatchets) must be well sharpened so as not to injure the tree with blunt ends of the object.
Before starting the procedure, it is necessary to carry out the treatment with antibacterial agents. With the help of the package, you can create a greenhouse effect, which is necessary for the grafted stock. But at the same time, you need to monitor the weather conditions in order to prevent overheating.
What can be grafted onto cherries
Many gardeners say that the closer (by kinship) the rootstock and the scion are, the better the cuttings will take root. For this reason, it is best to graft cherries onto cherries. As a basis, a variety is suitable that has high resistance to various weather conditions, good immunity against various diseases and insects. In addition to cherries, cherries can be grafted onto:
- Cherries.
- Plum.
- Bird cherry.
- Tern.
- Alych.
Gardeners say that it is worth choosing a wild type of stone fruit as a rootstock, since they have special strength and endurance. There are many cases that apricots, peaches, based on cherries, took root well.
If you combine a stone fruit culture with a pome fruit (apple, pear), in rare cases it has positive results.
How to plant cherries correctly: ways
There are different grafting methods, which depend on the stock, the season, and the conditions for the grower. The preparation of tools, cuttings and the basis for each of the methods is harvested in almost the same way.
How to plant cherries on the bark
This method is used if the stock has wide and powerful branches or a trunk. It is necessary to cut off the top of the base branch. On opposite sides it is necessary to make a shallow straight cut in the bark, the height of which will be no more than 3 cm. The lower part of the cutting must be cut at a very acute angle so that the scion can enter the cut in the rootstock bark.
When connecting both parts, the branch must be tightly wrapped with tape (with the sticky part on the outside) or with a grafting tape. Then you need to cover the joint with a garden varnish.
If necessary, the cuttings must be insulated with a plastic bag for 10-15 days.
How to plant cherries in your cleft
It is believed that this method brings more results. Suitable for spring grafting. In this case, the rootstock is noticeably wider in diameter than the grafting material. The base is harvested using the direct cleaned cut method.
By the diameter of the branch, which will be the base using a hatchet or knife, you need to split it with a depth of 4 cm. 1-2 cuttings can easily fit into the split. Then the joint must be processed with a sealing and strapping material.
Budding
This method has earned its popularity even among beginners. The admission with this method is not the entire stalk, but its separate bud or eye. It is necessary to choose a grafting site on the rootstock, but there should not be other pagons above it.
It is best to cut off the kidney before starting the procedure, during the preparation of the main trunk. It should be placed on a damp gauze. As for the peephole, it must be removed along with the bark nearby (about 2 cm).
On the base branch it is necessary to make an incision that looks like a letter T. The bark should be easily pulled back. The kidney must be tightly inserted into the incision so that there are no gaps. Using tape or tape, it is necessary to process the joint. One peephole should remain outside the joint.
Copying
It must be chosen if the diameters of the rootstock and the grafted material are the same. On average, the gap should be from 0.7 to 1 cm. The disadvantage of this method is poor wind tolerance. It is for this reason that you need to choose a fairly strong and solid foundation. Or, the cuttings must be grafted near the middle of the crown. On the scion and rootstock, it is necessary to make the same and sharp cuts. They should fit snugly together. Both parts must be secured with tape.
Tips
You can understand whether the plant was able to take root or not after a few weeks. The buds of the scion will let you know about this, which will significantly increase in size (if there is a positive result).Of course, the tape or grafting tape can be removed after a certain period of time, but it is best to keep it until next year.
If you have chosen the summer period for grafting, you need to shed the tree trunk well in advance so that the process of the flow of internal juices begins better. It is important to pay special attention to keeping the cut and tools clean.
To avoid contamination of the future plant, it is necessary, before you carry out the procedure, to process the instruments with the help of special antibacterial drugs.
Grafting cherries is not as difficult as it might seem at the beginning. It makes it possible to carry out various experiments with new varieties. If you do everything carefully, then you can avoid various mistakes, which in turn will bring you many positive results.
